There is no evidence-based single winner among these 12 authentication providers: the right fit depends on whether your app needs consumer login, business identity and organization management, or broader enterprise identity. The shortlist includes six providers in a March 2026 comparison, five additional options it names, and Okta as a separate enterprise-identity candidate whose fit for a consumer-facing AaaS shortlist was not established. Auth0 is the only provider here with current, directly comparable plan prices and user limits confirmed in the available sources.

Which 12 authentication providers are worth comparing?

The list below is a shortlist, not a ranking. A March 2026 comparison places six providers in its main group and names five more as notable options outside its scope. It does not provide a normalized feature and price comparison across all of them. The comparison is useful for identifying candidates, but its free-tier examples are a dated snapshot—not verified October 2026 terms.

Main comparison group

Provider What the shortlist establishes
Clerk Named in the comparison’s main group.
Auth0 Named in the main group; its current vendor-listed pricing is detailed below.
Firebase Authentication Named in the comparison’s main group.
Supabase Auth Named in the comparison’s main group.
WorkOS Named in the comparison’s main group.
AWS Cognito Named in the comparison’s main group.

Additional options named by the comparison

Provider What the shortlist establishes
Stytch Named as a notable option outside the comparison’s main scope.
Descope Named as a notable option outside the comparison’s main scope.
Kinde Named as a notable option outside the comparison’s main scope.
FusionAuth Named as a notable option outside the comparison’s main scope.
Microsoft Entra External ID Named as a notable option outside the comparison’s main scope.

Okta: keep the product distinction clear

Okta appears in the comparison landscape and in the context of Auth0’s company ownership, but the available evidence does not validate a separate Okta product for this consumer-facing AaaS shortlist. Treat Okta as an enterprise-identity candidate to investigate separately, not as a like-for-like Auth0 comparison on the basis of this shortlist.

What prices are confirmed for 2026?

Auth0’s live pricing page lists the following monthly prices and monthly active user (MAU) limits. These are vendor-listed terms viewed on October 8, 2026, not a normalized price comparison or a guarantee that the terms will remain unchanged. Check Auth0’s pricing page before budgeting or purchasing.

Auth0 plan Listed price Listed MAU limit
Free $0/month Up to 25,000
Essentials $35/month Up to 500
Professional $240/month Up to 500

The same plan comparison lists passwordless authentication and passkeys across its plans. MFA, organization role-based access control, audit log streaming, security features, higher limits, and enterprise options differ across plans; some advanced features and deployment options are tiered or offered as add-ons. A feature appearing on the platform does not establish that it is included in the plan whose price you are comparing. Confirm the exact entitlement and any add-on cost on the vendor page.

For the other 11 candidates, the available sources do not establish equivalent current prices, included volumes, or billable-user definitions. The March 2026 comparison gives free-tier examples for Clerk, Auth0, Firebase Authentication, Supabase Auth, WorkOS, and AWS Cognito, but those examples should not be treated as confirmed October 2026 offers. A meaningful price table requires current plan-page terms for every provider and the same projected usage assumptions.

How should you compare AaaS providers for your app?

Compare each candidate against the same requirements before shortlisting by price. A provider may support a capability while reserving it for a higher plan or add-on, so record both the capability and the plan that includes it.

  • Use case: Decide whether your primary need is B2C consumer sign-in, B2B SaaS identity with organizations, or broader enterprise identity. These are different buying problems, not interchangeable labels.
  • Billable-user definition: Record whether the vendor bills by monthly active user (MAU), monthly returning user (MRU), or another measure, plus the included volume and overage rules. Do not compare the headline limits until the counting rules match.
  • Login methods and account protection: Check social login, passwordless methods, passkeys, MFA, and risk controls, then verify their plan availability and any limits.
  • Business identity: If customers need organizations, roles, SAML or OIDC single sign-on (SSO), or System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) provisioning, verify each requirement and its plan gate explicitly.
  • Integration and operations: Check SDK and framework support, hosting and data-region choices, deployment options, compliance commitments, support, and service-level agreements (SLAs) against your own requirements.
  • Exit and portability: Understand how identity data can be exported, what identifiers and credentials can migrate, and what work would be required to change providers.

Why do MAU and MRU pricing produce different estimates?

MAU and MRU are not interchangeable billing units. In the March 2026 comparison, MRU excludes people who sign up but do not return after their first day, while MAU is described as a broader active-user measure. As a result, the same app activity can produce different billable counts under different definitions. Confirm each provider’s current definition, counting window, and exclusions before projecting cost; the comparison’s description is not a substitute for the current vendor contract or pricing page.

How do you make a shortlist without a misleading ranking?

  1. Write down the job: Identify whether your application primarily needs B2C login, B2B organization and SSO capabilities, or wider enterprise identity.
  2. Set a common workload: Estimate user counts and activity using your expected growth and the same time period for every provider.
  3. Verify the billing unit: Convert that workload using each vendor’s current user-count definition and included allowance; keep MAU and MRU estimates separate when they differ.
  4. Check plan-level access: Confirm the paid tier, limits, and add-ons needed for your required login methods, MFA, organization controls, SSO, SCIM, and security features.
  5. Validate operational fit: Check integration support, regions, deployment, compliance, support terms, and data export against your requirements.
  6. Compare like with like: Build a cost comparison only after those checks. The confirmed Auth0 figures above cannot stand in for missing competitor terms.

This approach can narrow the 12 candidates without pretending the evidence establishes a universal best provider or a complete October 2026 price-and-feature matrix.
