If your application calls Auth0’s /userinfo endpoint on every request, first check whether that request path really needs a fresh profile lookup. For basic client-side profile information, use the relevant claims from a validated ID token. If your app needs data from /userinfo, cache the fields it uses under a deliberate freshness policy instead of fetching them repeatedly. The exact code change depends on your framework, SDK, flow, and runtime.
How to confirm where the repeated calls come from
Inspect the application’s network trace or server logs and locate requests to Auth0’s /userinfo endpoint. Trace each call back to the code that initiates it. Check whether it runs once during sign-in or is triggered again by ordinary page loads, API requests, or other repeated work.
Then identify what the caller does with the response. If it only needs basic profile claims for client personalization, it may be able to use claims already present in the validated ID token. If it needs endpoint data, determine how fresh those fields must be and cache them accordingly.

ID token: user information for the client
An ID token carries information about the authenticated user for the client application. Auth0 describes ID tokens as a way to cache user profile information and provide it to a client. After validating the token, the client can use the relevant claims for profile display or personalization. See Auth0’s ID token documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Access token: authorization for an endpoint or API
An access token is used to call /userinfo or a protected API. It is not interchangeable with an ID token: do not send an ID token as a bearer token to a custom API. Access tokens are audience-specific, so the token must be intended for the API receiving it. Auth0 documents the roles and validation of tokens in its Authorization Code Flow guide and explains access-token audiences.
Choose the fix that matches the data you need
Use validated ID-token claims for basic client profile information
Find the code that fetches profile data and check whether the same fields are already available as claims in the ID token. If so, use those claims after validating the token, rather than calling /userinfo just to retrieve them again. Auth0’s guidance presents ID-token claims as a way to provide profile information to the client and improve performance and experience.

Cache endpoint data when the app still needs it
If the application depends on information returned by /userinfo, cache the response or the specific fields needed, and choose a freshness policy that fits the product. Auth0 Support recommends using and caching the ID token to reduce endpoint calls; caching the endpoint response is another option. Avoid assuming profile fields remain current forever: define when the application refreshes them based on how quickly changes need to appear.

The documentation supports these approaches, but it does not identify a universal code change for every framework or SDK. Apply the change at the actual call site in your application, using the token handling and cache APIs for your installed library and runtime.

Check scopes, token audience, and errors
- Scopes:
/userinforequires theopenidscope. Requested scopes affect which profile fields are returned; addingprofileoremailcan provide additional information when the application needs it. See Auth0’s Get User Info documentation. - Empty JSON response: Check that the token was granted
openid. Auth0 Support notes that a request without this scope can return an empty JSON object. See its userinfo troubleshooting guidance. - 401 response: Confirm the request includes a valid, user-issued access token. A missing or invalid token can cause a 401, according to the same Auth0 Support article.
- Wrong audience: Verify that the access token is intended for the endpoint being called. Auth0 documents conditions in which a custom API token can also target
/userinfo; do not assume every custom API token works for it. Check the configuration described in Auth0’s access-token guidance. - 429 response: Treat this as a rate-limit response. Auth0 documents the response headers
X-RateLimit-Limit,X-RateLimit-Remaining, andX-RateLimit-Reset; use them to guide your handling and consult the current service guidance rather than assuming one request quota applies to every tenant. Auth0 Support recommends caching to reduce calls in its article last updated May 15, 2026: Auth0 /userinfo Endpoint Returns “429 Rate Limits” Error.
Check whether your SDK makes the call
The request may be initiated by a library rather than by an obvious direct HTTP call in your own code. Auth0’s Auth0.js documentation shows that client.userInfo(accessToken, ...) makes a /userinfo request. Search for that method and other profile-fetching helpers in the installed SDK, then confirm their behavior for your specific version.
There is also a version-specific historical issue: Auth0 Support describes Auth0.js v9 and Lock v11 behavior that could call /userinfo when handling HS256-signed ID tokens, with RS256 or including an access token in the response type discussed as troubleshooting paths. This does not establish that current SDKs behave the same way. Check the project’s installed versions and the relevant current official documentation before changing signing or flow settings. See Auth0’s invalid-token troubleshooting guidance, last updated May 20, 2026.

Account for profile freshness
ID-token claims reflect the authentication context; they are not a live profile lookup. Auth0’s Get User Info documentation describes email as a snapshot at login and explains that updated values may require new tokens. If a changed profile value must appear promptly, use a refresh strategy appropriate to the application rather than treating an old ID token as current indefinitely.
