SUBCO has announced SM-1, a planned terrestrial fibre network intended to create a new, independent connectivity path between Sydney and Melbourne’s data-centre and cloud markets. It is an infrastructure project for carriers, cloud providers and enterprises—not a consumer broadband service—and its service date remains prospective.
What SUBCO announced
On 13 October 2026, SUBCO announced SM-1 as an 850-kilometre terrestrial fibre route between Sydney and Melbourne. The design calls for a minimum of 96 fibre pairs, giving the project a large physical capacity floor for inter-city transport. SUBCO is targeting Ready for Service (RFS) in June 2028. Data Center Dynamics reported the same route length, capacity minimum and schedule on 15 October 2026.
| Item | SM-1 detail |
|---|---|
| Route | Sydney to Melbourne, Australia |
| Network type | Terrestrial inter-capital fibre |
| Planned distance | 850 kilometres |
| Capacity floor | Minimum 96 fibre pairs |
| Target service date | June 2028 Ready for Service |
| Current status | Announced and planned; not yet in service |
The 96-pair figure is a minimum design commitment, not a statement of how many wavelengths, services or customer circuits will be available. Those depend on the optical systems and commercial products ultimately deployed.

Why a new Sydney–Melbourne path matters
Cloud, AI and enterprise traffic
SUBCO says hyperscale cloud expansion, artificial-intelligence workloads and growing enterprise data requirements are driving demand for additional domestic capacity. Sydney and Melbourne contain two of Australia’s largest concentrations of data centres, cloud on-ramps and network interconnection facilities, so a high-capacity path between them can serve traffic that otherwise has to use existing inter-capital corridors.
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more

- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Terrestrial connectivity beyond subsea systems
SM-1 extends SUBCO’s network footprint from subsea infrastructure into terrestrial inter-capital transport. A terrestrial route can complement submarine systems by providing another physical option inside Australia. The value is not simply more bandwidth: a separately engineered path can allow traffic to be moved when maintenance, construction damage or another incident affects a different corridor.
How SM-1 fits SUBCO’s redundancy strategy
Two geographically independent paths already advertised
In a March 2026 release, SUBCO said its existing Sydney–Melbourne service already spans two geographically independent paths and combines subsea and terrestrial connectivity. SM-1 is presented as an additional brand-new independent path within that broader route-diversity strategy. Independence is a physical-network claim; it does not mean every component, facility, power feed or carrier handoff is immune to a common failure.

Data-centre and cloud access
SUBCO’s March release names access points at NextDC, Equinix, AirTrunk and CDC facilities in Sydney and Melbourne. These locations are relevant because a long-haul fibre route is most useful when customers can reach it directly or through nearby interconnection facilities. The release also identifies sites in Adelaide and Perth, but it does not publish a total number of access locations.
SM-1 compared with other Sydney–Melbourne routes
The announcement provides firm SM-1 figures, but it does not publish a like-for-like specification sheet for every competing or existing route. The comparison below therefore separates established SM-1 attributes from metrics that remain unstated.

| Comparison point | SM-1 | Other Sydney–Melbourne routes |
|---|---|---|
| Physical route independence | SUBCO describes a brand-new, independent path | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| Fibre-pair capacity | Minimum 96 fibre pairs | Not stated |
| Measured latency | Not stated; no verified test figure has been published | Not stated |
| Data-centre access | Designed to connect Sydney and Melbourne data-centre and cloud on-ramps; SUBCO names specific facilities in its March release | Varies by network and access agreement |
| Delivery timing | June 2028 RFS target | Not comparable from the supplied announcement |
| Protection against a single route failure | Intended to add domestic route diversity | Depends on each network’s physical separation and protection design |
SM-1 should not be marketed as having a guaranteed latency advantage. Route distance, equipment and handoff design affect latency, and SUBCO has not released a measured SM-1 figure.
Timeline and what is still unknown
Published milestones
- 13 October 2026: SUBCO announces SM-1.
- 15 October 2026: Data Center Dynamics reports the 850-kilometre length, minimum 96-pair design and schedule.
- June 2028: SUBCO’s target Ready for Service date.
Why the date is not a guarantee
“Target Ready for Service” is a forward-looking delivery objective, not confirmation that customers can order service on that date. The announcement does not establish construction-completion milestones, a detailed route map, final product terms, or commissioning results. Those details will determine when capacity is actually saleable and which facilities can reach it.

What the project means for network planners
Data-centre operators
Operators in Sydney and Melbourne can evaluate SM-1 as a potential additional backhaul or interconnection option once access arrangements and service specifications are published. The practical question is whether a facility has a physically separate entry path and power and meet-me-room arrangements, rather than merely a second service sold under a different label.
Cloud and enterprise network teams
Teams designing resilient wide-area networks can treat SM-1 as a future path to assess alongside existing subsea and terrestrial connectivity. A robust design should document the actual ducts, buildings, carrier handoffs and failure domains used by each circuit before classifying them as independent.

Consumers and small offices
SM-1 is not a retail broadband plan, home internet upgrade or device. Any consumer benefit would be indirect, through the capacity and resilience of the wholesale networks that eventually use the route.
What to watch before June 2028
- A published route map showing physical separation from existing Sydney–Melbourne corridors.
- Confirmation of landing, data-centre and cloud on-ramp facilities that can order service.
- Optical specifications, service speeds, protection options and latency measurements.
- Construction and commissioning milestones that support or change the June 2028 target.
- Evidence that customer circuits use genuinely separate ducts, entry points and upstream systems where resilience is required.
The Bottom Line
SM-1 is a planned 850-kilometre terrestrial Sydney–Melbourne fibre route with a minimum 96 fibre pairs and a June 2028 RFS target. Its strategic purpose is to add an independent domestic path for data-centre, cloud, AI and enterprise traffic; the route’s final availability, latency and product details remain to be confirmed.
