A Linux Foundation webinar listing says Aussie Broadband moved from Kubernetes clusters running on single-tenant virtual machines in its private cloud to one bare-metal cluster using vCluster. The event title reports that the change eliminated 195 VMs, 1,000 CPU cores and 1 TB of memory. Those are the webinar’s headline figures, not independently audited savings; the listing provides no calculation method or before-and-after measurements.
What changed at Aussie Broadband
Before adopting vCluster, Aussie Broadband ran Kubernetes clusters on a single-tenant, VM-based architecture in its private cloud. The Linux Foundation’s event description says the company consolidated that infrastructure onto a single bare-metal Kubernetes cluster using vCluster. The event listing was recorded May 28, 2025, and presents this as a company case, not as a general recommendation for running Kubernetes without virtualization.
In this context, “single bare-metal cluster” describes the reported destination architecture. It does not establish that the company used one physical server: the listing does not disclose the number of machines or how the cluster was built.

| Figure | What the source reports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 195 VMs | The Linux Foundation webinar title says the move eliminated 195 virtual machines. | The listing gives no VM inventory, counting method or independent audit. |
| 1,000 CPU cores | The webinar subtitle reports this number alongside the VM reduction. | It does not say whether these were allocated, reserved or consumed cores, or provide a calculation method. |
| 1 TB of memory | The webinar subtitle reports this amount alongside the other reductions. | It does not specify whether the figure refers to allocated or used memory, or how it was measured. |
These figures describe the event’s stated outcome. The listing does not support converting them into a percentage reduction, a financial return, added capacity or a general benchmark. It characterizes the earlier setup as inefficient and increasingly costly, but supplies no cost figures, reliability data or performance benchmarks.

Why vCluster was part of the move
The event identifies vCluster as the technology used in the consolidation and describes it as a multi-tenancy technology in the speaker biography. That makes it relevant to a case involving a move away from single-tenant Kubernetes clusters, but the listing does not explain how Aussie Broadband configured tenant boundaries or isolation. It also does not provide enough technical detail to assess the implementation’s security or operational properties.
The speakers named for the migration discussion were Michael Norris of Aussie Broadband and Lukas Gentele of LoftLabs. The listing includes no attributed quotation from either speaker, so it does not establish their individual views beyond their participation.

What the webinar listing leaves unanswered
The event page is a promotional listing, not an implementation guide or technical report. It does not disclose:
- Physical server models, cluster node count or hardware failure domains.
- The Kubernetes distribution or version, or the network and storage design.
- Migration phases, application changes, rollback procedures or how workloads were moved.
- High-availability arrangements, post-migration service levels, performance results or detailed cost comparisons.
- How tenant isolation was implemented or validated.
Those omissions matter when evaluating whether the same approach would suit another organization. Eliminating VM infrastructure may change resource use and operating costs, but a sound comparison also needs evidence about utilization, isolation, availability, lifecycle work, migration risk and total cost of ownership. This case listing supplies no comparative measurements for those factors.

What this case can—and cannot—show
The case establishes a reported architecture change: Aussie Broadband moved its Kubernetes infrastructure from a single-tenant, VM-based private-cloud model to a consolidated bare-metal cluster using vCluster. The event headline gives three reported resource reductions. It does not establish how the migration was executed, whether services improved, how much money was saved or whether bare metal is preferable for other Kubernetes environments.
