Aurora did not fail because its browser “kernel” was broken. In Bartosz Osiej’s first-person postmortem, the apparent boot failure came from two ordinary web bugs: GitHub Pages served an HTML shell whose referenced JavaScript and CSS files were missing, and, after those files were published, a full-screen layer intercepted clicks intended for desktop icons.
The reliable way to diagnose this class of failure is to start at the browser’s network requests and rendered hit-testing—not at the application’s kernel code. Confirm that every deployed asset exists, then inspect which element is actually receiving pointer input.
What the Aurora incident actually involved
Aurora is described as a TypeScript operating-system-style interface that runs in a browser. The project includes a window manager, virtual file system, terminal, and eight applications, with no runtime dependencies. Its terminal is described as supporting more than 35 commands. Those figures are part of the project description in Osiej’s account, not independent benchmark results.
The page loaded enough HTML to display a boot screen and the text “Initializing kernel…”. That visible shell made the problem look like a failure in kernel startup. In fact, the browser was waiting for code that had never arrived. Once that deployment defect was corrected, a separate CSS hit-testing defect made the desktop look functional while preventing icon clicks.

| Visible symptom | What the postmortem found | Reported remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Boot screen remains on “Initializing kernel…” | dist/main.js and dist/style.css were referenced by the page but returned 404 responses from the deployed site. |
Publish the build output that contains the referenced files, either by committing it or by configuring the publishing process to generate and serve it. |
| Desktop icons are visible but do not launch apps | #windows-layer covered the viewport, sat above the icon grid, and remained eligible for pointer input. |
Make the structural full-screen layer click-through with pointer-events: none; enable pointer events on actual window elements with pointer-events: auto. |
Osiej presents these details as a first-person account of one Aurora deployment. They are useful debugging guidance, but they are not an independently verified test of every GitHub Pages setup or every browser OS project.
Why a page can load while the application cannot start
A browser does not fetch a web application as one indivisible object. It can successfully retrieve the HTML document and still fail to retrieve the JavaScript bundle or stylesheet named in that document. The browser will render the shell it has, while the application logic remains absent.
In Aurora’s case, the HTML referenced dist/style.css and dist/main.js. The project’s dist/ directory was ignored by Git. The Pages configuration described in the account served committed repository files and did not run npm run build as part of publication. The result was a deployed HTML file containing links to files that were not in the served tree. Both requests returned 404, so the boot code never became available and the interface stayed at its last visible status message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis explains why the words “kernel” and “initializing” are poor evidence by themselves. They are application text. They do not prove that a kernel function ran, that a promise rejected, or that a low-level subsystem is defective. The first question is whether the browser received the files needed to execute that code.
Diagnose the apparent boot hang at the network layer
1. Inspect the requests before reading application code
Open browser developer tools, select the Network panel, reload the page, and filter for main.js, style.css, or the dist path. A request with a 404 status means the server could not find the path requested by the page. In this incident, that result was more informative than the spinner or boot label.

- Reload with the Network panel open so requests from the initial page load are captured.
- Find the script request corresponding to
dist/main.jsand the stylesheet request corresponding todist/style.css. - Check the status column and open each request to see the exact URL the browser constructed.
- Compare that URL, including capitalization and directory, with the files that are actually present in the published tree.
- After correcting publication, reload again and confirm that both requests return successfully before investigating startup logic.
A page-relative reference can also point somewhere unexpected when the document is served from a subdirectory. The request URL shown by developer tools is the authority: test that deployed path, not merely a similarly named file in the local project.
2. Verify the deployed asset tree
Do not stop after seeing a successful local build. The browser uses the files at the deployed URL. Walk the published asset tree after every deployment and check every path referenced by the HTML, including the two Aurora paths. If the repository contains source files but the published directory contains no dist/, the browser cannot reconstruct the missing bundle on its own.
For a local repository, git ls-files dist is a quick way to see whether build output is tracked. It does not prove that a hosting workflow will publish that directory, but an empty result is a warning when the site is configured to serve committed files. In the browser, opening the exact deployed asset URL directly should return the file rather than a not-found page.
3. Make the build and publish contract explicit
There are two sound arrangements. The first commits the generated files and serves the directory that contains them. The second runs the build during deployment and publishes the build-output directory. What matters is not which arrangement you choose, but that the publisher’s source directory and the HTML’s references agree.
| Arrangement | What must be true | Typical failure to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Build output committed | The generated dist/ files are included in the branch and the Pages source serves that tree. |
dist/ is ignored or omitted from the commit, leaving HTML references with no matching files. |
| Build generated during publishing | The publishing workflow runs the project build and selects the resulting output directory as the artifact to serve. | The workflow builds one directory but Pages serves another, or no build step runs at all. |
The account describes a Pages configuration that served the repository tree without executing npm run build. That is a fact about the setup in the postmortem, not a timeless rule for every Pages configuration. Current Pages deployments can use different source branches, workflows, or build settings; inspect the configuration for the particular repository.

Why the icons still failed after the files were fixed
Once the JavaScript and CSS became available, the startup screen could proceed, revealing a second, unrelated defect. Desktop icons were visible, but clicking them did nothing. The cause was not an application launch routine. A transparent element named #windows-layer filled the viewport, had a positive z-index, and sat above the icon grid in the rendered stacking order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Transparency affects appearance, not hit-testing. An element with no visible pixels can still be the topmost pointer target. When the pointer is over an icon, the browser performs hit-testing against the painted and positioned layers; if the full-screen layer is eligible for pointer events, the click is delivered there instead of to the icon underneath.
This is why inspecting only what the user can see is insufficient. The desktop can look correct while its event path is wrong.
Fix the overlay without disabling window interaction
Use click-through behavior for the structural layer
The remedy described by Osiej is to keep the viewport-filling container for layout and stacking while removing it from pointer targeting:
#windows-layer {
pointer-events: none;
}
.window {
pointer-events: auto;
}
The first rule allows pointer input to pass through empty areas of the layer to controls below it. The second opts actual window elements back into interaction, so dragging a window, pressing a button, or typing in a terminal remains possible. Apply the class or selector used by the real interactive windows in the project; do not assume every descendant should be interactive.

Confirm the hit target in developer tools
- Open the Elements panel and select the desktop icon that should respond.
- Inspect its ancestors and siblings for fixed or absolute positioning, full-viewport dimensions, and a positive
z-index. - Temporarily toggle
pointer-events: noneon the suspected overlay in the Styles pane. - Click the icon again. If it immediately responds, the overlay was claiming the hit.
- Keep the click-through rule on the container and restore
pointer-events: autoonly on elements that genuinely need pointer input.
If an overlay is meant to block the desktop—for example, a modal backdrop—do not apply a blanket click-through rule. Give that state its own explicit interaction policy and ensure the backdrop or dialog is the intended target. The important distinction is between a structural layer that should not claim clicks and a control layer that should.
A practical troubleshooting sequence for “stuck on initializing kernel”
Use this order so a misleading status label does not send you into the wrong subsystem.
- Reproduce with developer tools open. Capture the reload from the first request.
- Check asset status. A 404 for a referenced script or stylesheet is a deployment problem until proven otherwise.
- Check the requested URL. Compare the browser’s exact path with the published directory, including
dist/and filename case. - Check the build contract. Determine whether generated files are committed or produced during publishing, and identify which directory the host serves.
- Republish and retest. Verify the deployed asset URLs directly, then reload the application.
- Only after assets load, inspect runtime behavior. At this point console errors and application initialization code become relevant.
- If controls are visible but inert, inspect hit-testing. Look for a full-screen positioned element above them and test its
pointer-eventsvalue. - Restore interaction selectively. Keep layout containers click-through and enable pointer input on windows and controls that need it.
Common wrong turns and what they teach
Treating the boot label as a kernel diagnostic
“Initializing kernel…” describes the user interface state, not the health of the code that would advance it. A missing bundle can leave that text on screen indefinitely. Network status is a faster discriminator than reading kernel functions first.
Checking only the repository, not the deployment
A file can exist locally and still be absent from the published site because it is ignored, generated in another directory, or excluded by the publishing configuration. Always verify the URL the browser requests after deployment.
Blaming JavaScript for a CSS event problem
When an icon is visible but does not receive a click, inspect stacking and pointer eligibility before rewriting its event handler. A higher layer can prevent the handler from ever seeing the event.

Making every layer interactive
Adding a large overlay is convenient for positioning windows, but allowing that overlay to claim pointer input changes the interaction model. Separate layout responsibility from input responsibility, then assign pointer behavior deliberately.
Prevent the two failures in future releases
- Keep the HTML references and build-output directory under the same deployment design.
- Document whether publishing serves committed files or a generated artifact.
- Run a post-deployment check that requests every JavaScript and CSS path referenced by the page.
- Inspect the Network panel on a clean reload, not only a warm local development session.
- Use an explicit stacking plan for desktop, windows, dialogs, and backdrops.
- Test pointer behavior with both visible and transparent layers present.
- After changing overlay CSS, click icons, drag windows, and interact with terminal controls.
These checks are inexpensive because they target the boundaries where the two defects occurred: the transition from source files to deployed files, and the transition from visual stacking to pointer hit-testing.
The broader lesson for browser-based interfaces
Browser applications often present a convincing shell before their real behavior is available. HTML can render while JavaScript is missing; a window can be visible while another element owns its hit area. Both failures are ordinary web-platform behavior, yet application-specific labels can make them look like deep operating-system faults.

Source and scope
The incident details and fixes come from Bartosz Osiej’s first-person account, “A web OS that ‘never booted’: the two bugs that looked like kernel failures but were 404s and z-index,” identified as an October 11 DEV Community post and originally published at bo.hartwell-labs.pl. The account describes the Aurora setup and the author’s remedies; it does not establish that every GitHub Pages project behaves the same way. Deployment source and build configuration determine what a particular site serves.
