There is no independently proven “most accurate” aurora app. The useful choice depends on what you need: NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) for official forecasts and alert definitions, SpaceWeatherLive for configurable notifications across many event types, Aurora Forecast & Alerts for a location-tappable short-term map, or My Aurora Forecast & Alerts for an Ovation-based map, suggested locations and longer outlooks. Whichever app you use, combine geomagnetic information with local cloud, darkness and light-pollution checks; an alert never guarantees a visible aurora.
What each option is best at
These services package overlapping space-weather data in different ways. The descriptions below reflect the providers’ current product pages and app-store listings, not a controlled test of prediction accuracy, uptime or notification delay.
NOAA/NWS Space Weather Prediction Center: the reference source
NOAA’s SWPC is the primary U.S. source for its own space-weather products and for the formal meaning of its watches, warnings and alerts. Its product catalogue includes a 30-minute aurora forecast, three-day products, a three-day geomagnetic forecast, alerts/watches/warnings, a notifications timeline and the planetary K-index. See the catalogue at https://www.spaceweather.gov/products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNOAA is not a single-purpose phone app. It is the place to check what an alert means, how far ahead a forecast extends and what observations support it. Use it as the authority when an app presents a simplified label or a dramatic notification.

SpaceWeatherLive: broad, configurable alert coverage
SpaceWeatherLive’s alert page lists geomagnetic activity, hemispheric power index, solar-radiation storms, radio blackouts, solar flares, coronal-mass-ejection impacts, coronal holes, radio emissions and news. Its service description says you can turn alert types on or off and receive notifications through its mobile apps, browser notifications, a mailing list and social channels. It also says geomagnetic activity alerts are sent every three hours when Kp is above storm level. Those are the service’s stated features, so check the current settings and delivery options on https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/aurora-alerts.html.
This breadth suits an enthusiast who wants to know why conditions may be changing, not only whether an aurora might be visible. More alert categories also mean more settings to understand and potentially more notifications.
Aurora Forecast & Alerts: a short-horizon map with data detail
The U.S. App Store listing advertises an interactive aurora map, customizable Kp notifications, solar-wind data including density, Bz and Bt, a 30-minute forecast, three-day and 27-day outlooks, SWPC alerts/watches/warnings and educational material. It says you can tap a map location for a spot-specific short-term forecast and that its data updates every five minutes. These are listing claims, not independent measurements of refresh reliability or forecast skill. Check the current listing at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aurora-forecast-alerts/id1476831567.
The location tap is useful when you are deciding between nearby viewing sites. A five-minute data refresh is also useful context, but it is not the same thing as a promise that a push notification arrives within five minutes.

My Aurora Forecast & Alerts: locations, webcams and longer planning
The store descriptions for My Aurora Forecast & Alerts advertise current Kp, an aurora map based on the SWPC Ovation forecast, suggested viewing locations, push notifications, forecasts ranging from the near term to several weeks, solar-wind information and live webcams. The Google Play listing is at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrustonapps.myauroraforecast.
This combination is aimed at someone who wants a recommendation about where to look as well as a forecast map. “Several weeks” describes an outlook horizon, not several weeks of dependable timing; confidence normally falls as the horizon expands.
How Kp relates to an aurora alert
Kp is a planetary measure of geomagnetic disturbance. NOAA describes the K-index as an integer from 0 to 9, with 1 representing calm conditions and 5 or higher indicating a geomagnetic storm. The planetary estimate summarizes a three-hour interval, while NOAA’s chart updates every minute. Read the definition at https://www.spaceweather.gov/products/planetary-k-index.
Those two time scales are easy to confuse. A chart that refreshes every minute may still be displaying a value representing the preceding three-hour period. Kp helps indicate whether the auroral oval may expand toward lower latitudes; it does not tell you whether your town is dark, cloud-free or inside the visible oval.

- Clouds and transparency: a strong geomagnetic storm is invisible through an overcast sky.
- Sunlight and moonlight: daylight prevents visual detection, and a bright Moon can reduce contrast.
- Light pollution: city glow can hide a faint display even when the geomagnetic level is elevated.
- Local geometry: the oval may be north of your location, overhead or south of you; a global Kp value cannot replace a map.
- Solar-wind detail: measures such as Bz and solar-wind density can change quickly, so a broad outlook can become a different short-term situation.
Watch, warning and alert do not mean the same thing
NOAA’s subscription-services explanation separates the three labels. A watch can cover the current day through the third forecast day, up to 72 hours ahead, but has lower confidence in intensity and timing. A warning uses upstream, in-situ solar-wind observations and is generally issued minutes to a couple of hours ahead. An alert indicates that a stated threshold has already been reached according to ground-based magnetometer observations. See https://www.spaceweather.gov/content/subscription-services.
When an app calls something an “aurora alert,” identify which underlying event it represents. It may be a Kp threshold, an observation of geomagnetic activity, a provider-defined notification or a reposted NOAA product. Treat a watch as planning information, a warning as a reason to check conditions soon and an alert as confirmation that a threshold was observed—not as a guarantee of a display over your house.
Feature comparison
| Option | Best fit | Forecast and map information | Alerts and delivery | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NOAA/SWPC | Official context and definitions | 30-minute aurora forecast, three-day products, three-day geomagnetic forecast, planetary K-index | Official alerts, watches, warnings and notifications timeline; channel details vary by product | Use NOAA to interpret its own products; it is not an independent app-accuracy ranking |
| SpaceWeatherLive | Users who want many event categories and controls | Service page focuses on alert information rather than a stated point-specific forecast interval | Toggle alert types; mobile apps, browser notifications, mailing list and social channels are described | It says geomagnetic alerts are sent every three hours when Kp is above storm level |
| Aurora Forecast & Alerts | Near-term, location-specific map use | Tap a spot for a 30-minute forecast; three-day and 27-day outlooks; solar-wind density, Bz and Bt; listing says data updates every five minutes | Customizable Kp notifications plus SWPC alerts, watches and warnings | Five-minute data refresh is a listing claim, not a notification-latency measurement |
| My Aurora Forecast & Alerts | Suggested locations and a broad planning view | SWPC Ovation-based map, current Kp, near-term-to-several-week forecasts, solar-wind information and live webcams | Push notifications are advertised | Store descriptions do not establish comparative forecast accuracy or uptime |
Choose by the decision you need to make
“I only want to know whether I should go outside tonight.”
Start with a simple Kp or aurora notification, then open a map before leaving. A short-horizon, location-tappable view such as the one advertised by Aurora Forecast & Alerts can answer “what is happening near this site?” more directly than a general storm headline. Confirm the result against NOAA’s 30-minute product and local cloud cover.
“I plan trips several days ahead.”
Use NOAA’s three-day products or an app that presents multi-day and 27-day outlooks as planning aids. Put the date on your calendar, but do not book a long drive solely because a 27-day outlook shows elevated activity. Recheck the watch, warning and short-term map on the day of the trip.

“I want to understand the space weather, not just chase an aurora.”
SpaceWeatherLive’s range of alert categories is the better match if solar flares, radio blackouts, CME impacts or solar-radiation storms matter to you. Turn off categories that are irrelevant so an important geomagnetic notice is not buried in unrelated alerts.
“I need suggested places and a webcam.”
My Aurora Forecast & Alerts advertises suggested viewing locations, an SWPC Ovation-based map and live webcams. Treat a webcam as evidence of what another site saw, not proof that your own horizon is clear or that the display will persist while you drive there.
Set up an alert workflow that avoids false confidence
- Pick a primary source. Use NOAA/SWPC when you need the official product and terminology. Add one app only if its map, location or notification controls solve a problem the NOAA pages do not.
- Set your observing location. Enter the actual dark-sky site, not only your home city. A forecast can look different at two locations separated by a modest distance when the auroral oval is near the edge of visibility.
- Choose notification thresholds deliberately. A high Kp threshold reduces routine notices but can miss a brief, local opportunity. A low threshold gives earlier context but requires you to inspect the map and sky conditions yourself. There is no universal Kp number that guarantees visibility at every latitude.
- Enable more than one delivery path when timing matters. Check phone notification permission, browser permission, background activity and battery-saving exclusions. If a provider offers email or a mailing list, use it as a backup rather than assuming a push notification is guaranteed.
- Read the underlying product. Open the NOAA alert or forecast linked from the notification. Determine whether it is a watch, warning or threshold alert, and note the valid time and geographic scope.
- Check the terrestrial forecast. Review hourly cloud cover, precipitation, visibility, darkness and the Moon for the selected site. Space-weather data cannot supply these local conditions.
- Recheck before departing and on arrival. Solar-wind conditions can change during a drive. Refresh the map, look north (or toward the predicted direction), and allow your eyes time to adapt to darkness.
Common problems and what they mean
The app shows high Kp, but nothing is visible
Kp is a planetary, three-hour geomagnetic summary. It does not measure clouds, haze, daylight, light pollution or the exact position of the auroral oval over your site. Check the short-term map, local sky forecast and darkness before concluding that the alert was “wrong.”
Recommended Free Tools
The map and the notification disagree
They may represent different time windows. A notification can be triggered by a threshold that has already been observed, while a map may show a model forecast for the next 30 minutes. Confirm the timestamp, refresh interval and location used by each screen.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Notifications arrive late or not at all
Data refresh, server processing, operating-system delivery and your network connection are separate steps. The five-minute refresh advertised by Aurora Forecast & Alerts does not establish push latency, and SpaceWeatherLive’s stated three-hour geomagnetic schedule is not a promise that every event reaches every device immediately. Check permissions, background-data restrictions, battery optimization and the app’s own alert toggles; keep NOAA’s product page available as a direct fallback.
A long-range forecast keeps changing
That is expected. NOAA explicitly gives watches lower confidence in timing and intensity than warnings, and a 72-hour watch is not a precise appointment. Treat the long-range view as a reason to monitor the date, then rely more heavily on upstream observations and short-term products as the event approaches.
Use the data responsibly for photography
An alert can tell you when to prepare, but it cannot set up a camera or make a cloudy sky clear. If you plan to photograph the aurora, prepare focus, exposure, spare power and a stable support before leaving. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide provides general capture instruction at https://science.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Astrophotography_Guide.pdf?emrc=66e4ba5e0c9dc. This is preparation guidance, not an endorsement of a particular app or camera.

A practical decision rule
Choose NOAA/SWPC when authority and definitions are your priority. Choose SpaceWeatherLive when configurable, multi-event notifications are the main need. Choose Aurora Forecast & Alerts when a point-specific short-term map and detailed solar-wind fields are most useful. Choose My Aurora Forecast & Alerts when suggested locations, webcams and an Ovation-based map fit your planning style. Many observers will sensibly pair one app with NOAA rather than treating any single notification as a visibility guarantee.
App features, availability and alert settings can change, so review the current listing and notification controls before relying on them for a trip. No reviewed source establishes that one of these options predicts the aurora more accurately than the others.
