Use the cause, not the color, as your first test. Aurora borealis is light produced when energetic particles enter the upper atmosphere under the direction of Earth’s magnetic field. Airglow is the atmosphere’s own faint emission, produced by chemical reactions and excitation processes involving sunlight and atmospheric gases. Because both phenomena can involve oxygen and nitrogen, they may share colors and apparent altitudes. Motion, brightness, persistence, location and geomagnetic context can support an identification, but a glow cannot always be classified reliably from one photograph or a quick visual impression.
The essential difference: outside particle energy versus atmospheric emission
Aurora and airglow are both upper-atmosphere light, but they are not two versions of the same event.
How aurora borealis forms
Aurora borealis occurs when energetic particles from space collide with atoms and molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Earth’s magnetic field guides those particles toward the polar regions, where the deposited energy excites atmospheric gases. As the excited atoms and molecules return to lower-energy states, they release light.

How airglow forms
Airglow is light emitted by the atmosphere itself. NASA describes processes that include chemical reactions, excitation by ordinary solar radiation and the release of light when ionized atoms or molecules capture free electrons. These reactions continue around Earth, including on the night side; nightglow is simply easier to notice when the surrounding sky and Earth are dark.
Airglow is therefore widespread and persistent rather than a localized storm of incoming particles. Atmospheric winds can shape its patterns, but its usual appearance is a subdued, diffuse glow or broad band rather than a sharply defined curtain.
This physical distinction is the most dependable one, even though an observer on the ground usually cannot measure the energy source directly. Visual clues are useful evidence, not a guaranteed field test.

| Clue | Aurora borealis | Airglow |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Energetic particles interact with upper-atmosphere gases; Earth’s magnetic field directs the energy into the atmosphere. | Atmospheric chemical interactions and excitation processes, including processes driven by ordinary solar radiation. |
| Timing and distribution | Episodic and commonly associated with polar regions, with visibility changing as geomagnetic conditions change. | Occurs around Earth continually; nightglow is easier to detect against a dark Earth and sky. |
| Typical appearance | Changing arcs, curtains, rays, wisps or other structured forms are common possibilities. | Usually a faint, diffuse glow or band; atmospheric winds can produce patterns within it. |
| Color | Oxygen can produce green and red; nitrogen can contribute blue and purple. | Color depends on the gas, altitude region and excitation process, and can overlap auroral colors. |
| How strong the clue is | Movement and geomagnetic context can support an identification, but neither is visual proof by itself. | Faintness and persistence support an identification, but appearance alone is not definitive. |
NASA’s direct comparison summarizes the problem precisely: “The colors and altitude are often the same, but the atmospheric processes are different.” Treat the table as a set of probabilities rather than a rigid identification key.
Why color is a poor stand-alone test
Color is tempting because green aurora is the image most people recognize. It is not, however, a unique aurora signature. The same atmospheric gases can emit in both aurora and airglow, and the observed color also depends on altitude, excitation and the camera or display used to record it.
Auroral oxygen bands
NASA’s aurora explainer gives approximate altitude ranges for familiar oxygen emissions: green light is commonly explained as occurring around 100–200 kilometers (60–120 miles), while red oxygen emissions occur above roughly 200 kilometers (120 miles). These are explanatory bands, not a boundary that separates aurora from airglow. Airglow can occupy overlapping upper-atmosphere regions, so matching a color or an apparent height does not identify the mechanism.
Nitrogen and mixed colors
Nitrogen emissions can contribute blue and purple hues to auroras. Airglow colors vary with the gas involved, the altitude region and the excitation process, so a blue, red, yellow or green cast cannot be assigned confidently to one category without additional context.

Why cameras make color even less decisive
Long exposures, high sensor sensitivity, white-balance settings, in-camera processing and later editing can all make a faint glow look more saturated or structured than it appeared to the eye. A camera may reveal airglow that was invisible visually, while also exaggerating weak auroral color. Color in a file is evidence of emitted or recorded light, not a direct measurement of the process that produced it.
Brightness, persistence and motion: useful but imperfect clues
Brightness
Airglow is subtle. NASA Earth Observatory described nightglow as “one billionth as bright as the Sun” in a 2020 comparison. A separate NASA airglow explainer from 2018 described airglow as “a tenth as bright as all the stars in the night sky.” These comparisons use different reference objects and should not be merged into one statistic; both convey that ordinary nightglow is extremely faint.
Aurora is often more conspicuous, especially during an active display, so a bright, obvious green or red structure is more suggestive of aurora than of ordinary airglow. Brightness is still not proof. A weak aurora can be subtle, and a sensitive camera can record airglow that looks prominent after exposure and processing.
Persistence
Airglow is continuously present around Earth, so a broad, nearly steady horizon band that remains in the same general place is compatible with airglow. Persistence alone cannot exclude a stable auroral arc, however, and changing atmospheric conditions can alter airglow’s texture.
Motion and structure
Rapidly changing arcs, folds, rays or curtains strongly favor aurora because they reflect changing particle precipitation and magnetic-field-driven structure. Airglow can have patterns shaped by atmospheric winds, but it more often looks smooth and diffuse. Slow changes over a long exposure are not enough to establish an auroral origin, and a still photograph cannot demonstrate motion at all.
Geographic and geomagnetic context
Auroras are usually associated with polar regions, although the visible oval expands toward lower latitudes during stronger geomagnetic activity. A report of aurora activity in your region can increase the likelihood that a moving glow is auroral. Airglow occurs globally, so it does not require a particular latitude or a geomagnetic event. Context raises or lowers confidence; it does not replace physical evidence.
A practical observation checklist
When you see an uncertain glow, record the evidence before deciding what it is. The following sequence keeps the strongest clues ahead of the seductive but unreliable color test.

- Describe the shape without naming it. Write down whether the light is a smooth band, a narrow arc, vertical rays, folds, wisps or a broad haze. Avoid calling it “aurora” in your first note.
- Watch for several minutes. Look for arcs that sharpen, curtains that ripple, rays that appear or disappear, and changes in position. Obvious organized motion supports aurora. A stable diffuse band supports airglow but does not prove it.
- Assess relative brightness. Ask whether the feature is plainly visible to your unaided eyes or only appears in a photograph. A barely detectable band is compatible with airglow; an intense, structured display is more typical of aurora.
- Check the sky and horizon. Cloud, haze, light pollution and twilight can create or conceal broad color. A clear, dark sky improves the chance of seeing airglow, while twilight and city light can distort both phenomena.
- Consider location and timing. Note your latitude, the direction of the display and whether a geomagnetic alert or confirmed aurora report applies. This is supporting context, not a visual diagnosis.
- Compare multiple frames if you have them. A time sequence can reveal movement that a single frame hides. Keep the exposure and white balance as consistent as possible so processing changes do not mimic motion.
- Assign a confidence level. Use “likely aurora,” “likely airglow” or “unresolved” rather than forcing a binary answer when the evidence is weak.
This method is deliberately conservative. The phenomena can overlap in one view, and an observer at ground level generally cannot verify the underlying particle or chemical process directly.

Can you identify airglow from the ground?
Sometimes, but the conditions are demanding. NASA notes that airglow is difficult to see from the ground except under clear, dark skies with a sensitive camera. The same sources describe airglow observations from orbit, where the dark limb of Earth provides a favorable background and the atmosphere can be viewed without much of the interference encountered by a ground observer.
A faint reddish, yellowish or greenish band near the horizon may be airglow, especially if it is broad and persistent. It may also be residual twilight, distant light pollution, haze or a weak auroral feature. Human vision alone often cannot separate these possibilities. Recording the time, direction, weather and exposure settings makes the observation more useful, but it does not turn a photograph into a diagnostic instrument.
What photographs can—and cannot—tell you
What a camera helps with
- A long exposure can reveal faint airglow that is difficult to see unaided.
- A sequence of images can show whether a structure changes shape or position.
- Consistent exposure settings allow a more meaningful comparison between frames.
- Images preserve the direction, horizon and surrounding stars that provide context.
What a camera cannot establish by itself
- Color alone cannot identify the energy source because aurora and airglow can share gases and colors.
- Image brightness is not the physical brightness of the atmosphere; exposure and processing alter it.
- A single frame cannot prove that a feature moved or that particles caused it.
- Consumer camera equipment is not established as necessary or diagnostically sufficient for distinguishing the two phenomena.
NASA’s example demonstrates both the value and the limit of photography. An astronaut photograph taken just before dawn on March 16, 2020, from the International Space Station while it passed south of the Alaskan Peninsula shows wavy green auroral wisps with red tops crossing a muted red-yellow airglow band. Rising sunlight adds deep blue at the horizon. The image was made with a Nikon D5 and a 50 mm lens, then cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Those specifications describe that particular orbital photograph; they are not a requirement for identifying every glow, and the processing means the displayed colors should not be treated as an unaltered visual template.
Aurora and airglow can occupy the same scene
The International Space Station photograph is important because it prevents a common false choice. A view does not have to contain either aurora or airglow. The wavy, structured auroral wisps and the muted airglow band were visible together, with sunlight contributing another layer near the horizon.
When two components overlap, a broad background band may be airglow while brighter moving streaks cross it as aurora. A camera can compress those layers into one colorful image, making the distinction harder rather than easier. Look for differences in texture and behavior within the frame instead of assigning one label to the entire sky.
Common misidentifications and how to avoid them
“It is green, so it must be aurora.”
Green is compatible with auroral oxygen emissions, but shared atmospheric gases mean it is not exclusive to aurora. Check structure, movement, persistence and context before deciding.

“It is red, so it must be airglow.”
Red can occur in aurora as well as in airglow. NASA places the familiar red auroral oxygen emission above roughly 200 kilometers (120 miles), but that altitude explanation does not separate aurora from airglow.
“It is at the horizon, so it is airglow.”
Perspective, Earth’s curvature and camera framing make apparent altitude difficult to judge. Aurora and airglow can appear at similar heights in an image, so a horizon location is only a weak clue.

“A long exposure proves it is aurora.”
Long exposure proves only that the camera accumulated enough light to record the scene. It can reveal either phenomenon and can make a diffuse glow look more vivid.
“A still photograph shows what moved.”
It does not. Use a time sequence or an eyewitness observation for motion, and keep in mind that atmospheric winds can also shape airglow patterns.
“If I cannot see it with my eyes, it is not real.”
Airglow is often too faint for unaided ground observation, particularly near light pollution or haze. A camera can detect it without making its source visually obvious.

Airglow is more than background coloration. NASA describes it as an atmospheric tracer: because each gas has favored emission colors depending on the gas, altitude region and excitation process, researchers can use airglow to study upper-atmosphere temperature, density, composition and motion. Doug Rowland, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, explained that relationship this way: “Each atmospheric gas has its own favored airglow color depending on the gas, altitude region, and excitation process, so you can use airglow to study different layers of the atmosphere.”
That scientific use also explains why a visual shortcut is unreliable. Researchers combine spectral, spatial and temporal measurements to infer atmospheric conditions. An unaided observer generally has only broadband color, apparent shape and changing brightness.

A decision framework for uncertain sightings
Use the following interpretation rather than a rigid yes-or-no key:
- Likely aurora: a conspicuous, organized feature that changes shape or position, especially when geomagnetic conditions and location make aurora plausible.
- Likely airglow: a very faint, broad and persistent band visible under a dark, clear sky, with little obvious organized motion.
- Possible mixture: a subdued background glow crossed by brighter moving arcs, wisps or curtains.
- Unresolved: a single processed image, a color-only observation, a scene affected by twilight or light pollution, or any view in which motion and context are unavailable.
“Unresolved” is a scientifically responsible result, not a failure. NASA’s comparison explicitly warns that color and altitude can match even when the atmospheric processes differ.
How faint is airglow in context?
The two NASA brightness comparisons help calibrate expectations, provided their reference objects remain attached. NASA Earth Observatory’s 2020 comparison calls nightglow “one billionth as bright as the Sun.” NASA’s 2018 airglow explainer describes airglow as “a tenth as bright as all the stars in the night sky.” They are not interchangeable measurements, and neither is a promise that every airglow display will look the same from the ground. Their practical message is that airglow is a low-level atmospheric emission that usually needs favorable darkness and sensitive imaging to stand out.
What to remember when labeling a photo
Start your caption with what the image actually establishes: for example, “a faint diffuse band, source unresolved” or “structured moving arcs consistent with aurora over a diffuse background glow.” If you have a documented time sequence, weather record and geomagnetic context, include those details. Avoid claiming that a particular RGB value, apparent altitude or camera model proves the source.
The NASA Gateway to Astronaut Photograph of Earth search returned more than 270,000 photos for “aurora” in the 2020 Earth Observatory article. That count is a database snapshot and may change; it illustrates the scale of available imagery, not a classification rule. Many photographs labeled for their most obvious feature can contain both auroral and airglow components.
The most accurate answer
Aurora borealis is particle-powered and episodic; airglow is an atmospheric emission that occurs continually around Earth. Look first for changing, organized structure and geomagnetic context, then consider brightness and persistence. Treat color and apparent altitude as supporting details only, because the gases and viewing geometry overlap. A faint horizon band may be airglow, an active curtain may be aurora, and a single photograph may contain both—or may not allow a confident identification at all.
