AudioMass is a free, open-source audio editor that runs in a web browser, so you can work with audio without installing a desktop editing program. It handles waveform edits, effects, recording, and multitrack arranging; the project documents exports to MP3 and WAV as well as reusable session files. What works in practice depends on your browser, audio file, recording permissions, and project size.
What AudioMass is—and how browser editing works
AudioMass loads audio supported by your browser and provides tools for editing it in a waveform interface. Its official site describes the editor as running entirely in the browser without a backend or plug-ins. That makes it useful for a quick edit from a browser tab, but it does not mean every file format, device, or project size will behave equally well.
The project began in June 2018 and was shared publicly in July 2019, according to its About page. AudioMass describes workflows such as arranging takes, assembling podcasts, and stitching ideas together quickly; these are the project’s own descriptions, not independent performance findings.

What can you do with AudioMass?
Make waveform edits
AudioMass documents cutting, copying, pasting, trimming, reversing, and inverting audio. It also supports waveform selection and navigation, cue markers, zero-crossing selection, and undo. Zero-crossing selection can help make a cut at a point where the waveform crosses its center line, while cue markers let you mark locations to return to.

Apply effects and repair audio
The project lists compression, paragraphic equalizers, reverb, delay, and pitch and speed profiles. Its documented repair tools address clicks, hum, and hard edit points. Automatic beat detection and snap-to-beat are also listed, alongside seamless-loop and silence-trimming improvements.
Record and arrange multiple tracks
AudioMass documents audio recording as well as multitrack editing. Its README describes layering tracks, moving clips, crossfading overlaps, recording onto armed channels, and bouncing the arrangement to one file. The About page characterizes multitrack mixdown as an offline render to a single WAV or MP3.

Multitrack mode was added in July 2022, and the project documents later improvements including session files in January 2026, pitch and speed profiles in February 2026, automatic beat detection in March 2026, and click, hum, and hard-edit repair tools in April 2026. Its May 2026 changelog includes seamless-loop, silence-trim, zero-crossing, and related editing improvements.

Export an edited file
For an MP3 export, AudioMass’s About page directs users to choose File and then Export to MP3. For multitrack work, the project documents an offline mixdown to one WAV or MP3 file.

Save a multitrack session to continue later
AudioMass documents saving multitrack sessions as .amss files and reopening them later. This preserves a session for continued work; it is distinct from exporting a finished audio file for playback or sharing.
What to check before relying on it
Because AudioMass relies on browser-supported audio and browser capabilities, test the workflow you need in your own setup before starting a large or important project. The official documentation does not provide a complete compatibility matrix.

- Browser and file: Confirm your browser can load the audio file you intend to edit.
- Recording permissions: If recording, allow the browser to access your microphone and verify the selected input.
- Project size: Try a short sample first if you expect a large file or a complex multitrack session.
- Offline use: AudioMass lists offline support, but check that it works as expected in your browser and workflow.
- Export and session recovery: Test the export format you need and save an
.amsssession if you expect to return to a multitrack arrangement.
Licensing and redistribution
AudioMass identifies its own license as MIT. The project also notes that bundled libraries have separate licenses, mostly BSD-style, and that the MP3 encoder is under LGPL. If you plan to redistribute a build, review the repository’s third-party notices and the applicable dependency terms rather than assuming the editor’s MIT license covers every component.
When AudioMass is a practical fit
AudioMass is a reasonable option when you want to make a waveform edit, apply an effect, record, or assemble tracks in a browser without installing desktop software. Its documented feature set extends beyond basic trimming to multitrack crossfades, mixdown, and resumable sessions. If your work depends on a particular format, device, or demanding project size, verify that the whole workflow works in your browser before committing the project to it.
