Neither audiobooks nor printed books is universally better. The best available comparisons find no dependable overall comprehension winner. Reading can have a modest edge when readers control the pace and on tasks requiring inference or broad understanding, while literal-detail performance is usually similar. Memory findings likewise show little consistent difference between listening and reading. Choose the format that keeps your attention and lets you pause, replay, reread, and review when the material demands it.

What the strongest evidence actually finds

“Comprehension” is not one single outcome. A quiz asking for a stated fact measures something different from a question that requires an inference, and an immediate test measures something different from recall days later. The studies below are therefore most useful when read by outcome and study design rather than reduced to “audio versus print.”

Evidence source Participants and design Main modality finding Important qualification
Clinton-Lisell, Review of Educational Research (2022) 46 studies; 4,687 participants Overall reading-versus-listening comprehension difference was not reliable (g = 0.07, p = .23). Reading favored self-paced conditions (g = 0.13, p = .049), inferential comprehension (g = 0.36, p = .02), and general comprehension (g = 0.15, p = .05). Literal comprehension was effectively equal (g = −.01, p = .93). The self-paced result concerns studies in which readers could control their progress; it does not mean every print book beats every audiobook.
Mar, Li, Nguyen, and Ta, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review (2021) More than 75 unique samples and over 33,000 participants, in a meta-analysis primarily about narrative versus expository text Listening and reading differed little overall (Gdiff = .07). When studies controlled text difficulty, Gdiff = .03; when they controlled content, Gdiff = .02; immediate versus delayed testing produced Gdiff = .03. These are modality comparisons within a genre-focused meta-analysis. The authors note substantial heterogeneity, so a non-significant average is not proof that every individual experiences identical learning.
Clinton-Lisell, Educational Research: Theory & Practice (2023) 30 eligible studies, 1,945 participants, 62 effect sizes Reading while listening produced a small overall comprehension benefit over reading alone (g = .18, SE = .07, p = .01). The benefit was confined to experimenter-paced studies (g = .41, 95% CI [.13, .70]); it was not reliable in self-paced reading (g = .06, 95% CI [−.07, .19]). This is audio-assisted reading, not audiobook-only listening versus print-only reading.
Singh and Alexander, Educational Psychology Review (2022) Review of 32 documents Some younger-learner samples showed audiobook-only benefits, and some identified groups benefited from audio plus print. Direct audiobook-versus-print comparisons, older learners without identified needs, and expository texts were comparatively scarce. Subgroup findings should not be generalized to all readers.

Taken together, these reviews support a conditional answer: format alone is a weak predictor of understanding. Control over pace, the type of question being asked, the reader’s characteristics, and the text itself matter more than the label “audio” or “print.”

How to interpret the averages

An effect size such as g summarizes the average separation between groups in standard-deviation units. A value near zero means the pooled difference was small relative to the variation among participants, not that every person had the same score in both conditions. The overall g of 0.07 in the 2022 comparison is therefore best read as a very small average difference that was not statistically reliable.

The moderators are more informative than the headline average. Self-paced reading produced a small advantage, while experimenter-paced comparisons did not show a reliable reading benefit. Inferential comprehension showed a larger reading advantage than literal questions. Those patterns suggest that task demands and control over time can matter even when the overall average looks essentially tied.

Meta-analyses also combine different books, tests, ages, and procedures. Heterogeneity means the individual estimates do not all point to exactly the same number. A pooled non-significant result rules out a dependable universal winner; it does not promise identical outcomes for a dense textbook, a short story, and a familiar light novel.

Why pacing and control can change the result

Print is naturally self-paced

With a printed page, you can stop at a difficult sentence, reread a paragraph, scan back for a definition, or slow down without interrupting anyone else. The 2022 meta-analysis found its clearest reading advantage in self-paced comparisons. That result is consistent with a practical mechanism: when comprehension depends on integrating several ideas, the ability to regulate time on task can prevent a missed connection from cascading through the rest of a chapter.

Audio has a default speed, but not necessarily a fixed one

An audiobook flows at the narrator’s or app’s playback speed. Pausing, replaying, using chapter markers, and adjusting speed can restore much of the control that print provides. A listener who actively uses those controls is not in the same condition as a listener who lets a chapter play once at a fixed rate.

Experimenter-paced studies are a different comparison

In a laboratory or classroom study, all participants may receive the same amount of time or the same uninterrupted recording. That design improves consistency across participants but may remove the advantage of personal pacing. It also explains why audio-assisted reading showed a larger effect in experimenter-paced studies than in self-paced ones: the intervention and the time constraints were different.

Control is useful only when it is used

Having a pause button does not automatically improve learning. Effective control means noticing when a sentence stopped making sense, stopping soon enough to repair it, and then resuming. Constantly rewinding without summarizing can create the feeling of effort without a clear memory trace. Likewise, racing through print while refusing to reread gives up much of print’s theoretical advantage.

Comprehension: what kind of understanding do you need?

Literal comprehension

Literal questions ask what the text explicitly stated: a date, name, event, definition, or stated reason. In the 2022 synthesis, reading and listening were essentially equivalent on this outcome. If your goal is to follow a plot or retain clearly stated information, either format can work when attention is comparable.

Inferential comprehension

Inference requires connecting clues, supplying an unstated relationship, or drawing a conclusion from multiple sentences. Reading had a moderate advantage in the cited meta-analysis. The result does not establish that audio prevents inference; it indicates that, across the included comparisons, print produced higher scores on this particular kind of task.

General comprehension

General-comprehension measures combine broader understanding rather than testing one isolated detail. Reading had a small advantage in the same synthesis. For dense arguments, technical explanations, or chapters that build a chain of claims, the ability to look back may be especially useful.

Performance can change during the same book

A reader may understand a narrative equally well in either mode but switch to print for a chapter containing a map, unfamiliar terminology, or several competing timelines. Conversely, a long descriptive passage may be easier to sustain in audio. Choosing a format chapter by chapter is legitimate; the evidence does not require a single medium for an entire book.

Memory: do you remember more from reading or listening?

The memory evidence does not support the claim that print always wins. In the 2021 meta-analysis, auditory and written presentation produced only small differences, including when tests were delayed rather than administered immediately. The study also found that stories were generally easier to understand and recall than essays, which is a text-genre effect rather than proof that one delivery medium is superior.

Delayed recall is important because a format can feel easy in the moment without producing durable learning. The available synthesis did not show a meaningful, consistent modality gap between immediate and delayed tests. However, the authors caution that the studies were heterogeneous and that a non-significant average can reflect limited sample sizes or wide variation among experiments. Treat the finding as “no dependable overall winner in the available evidence,” not as a guarantee of equal memory for every book and every listener.

For durable learning, test yourself instead of relying on familiarity. After a section, close the book or stop playback and name the central claim, supporting details, and any unresolved question. Check the source only after attempting recall. This procedure works with either medium and reveals whether an apparently smooth session produced usable memory.

Audio-only, print-only, and read-and-listen are different interventions

Mode What the learner receives Most useful control What the evidence can and cannot establish
Print only Written text without synchronized narration Reread, scan, annotate, and set your own pace Reading showed modest advantages in self-paced, inferential, and general-comprehension comparisons in the 2022 meta-analysis.
Audiobook only Narrated text without a visible page Pause, replay, chapter navigation, and playback speed Pooled comparisons found no reliable overall comprehension disadvantage, but direct evidence is thinner for older typical learners and expository material.
Read while listening Written text and synchronized audio together Pause either stream, repeat a passage, and keep visual place A 2023 review found a trivial overall benefit over reading alone, driven by experimenter-paced studies; it should not be presented as audiobook-only superiority.

Choose a format by task, not by reputation

Your immediate goal Starting choice Adjustment if comprehension slips
Enjoy a narrative and remember the main events Either audio or print Pause or revisit the previous chapter when a character, timeline, or motive becomes unclear.
Study an argument, procedure, or technical explanation Print, because scanning and rereading are central controls Annotate key claims, definitions, and transitions; switch to audio for a second pass if it helps sustain attention.
Extract stated facts quickly Whichever format keeps your attention; literal outcomes were similar on average Use bookmarks or chapter markers so you can return to the exact passage.
Make inferences across several pages Self-paced print or synchronized print-plus-audio Stop after each section and state the implied conclusion before continuing.
Review material after an initial read Audio can provide a convenient second exposure Replay only the sections you cannot summarize, rather than assuming a complete repeat is necessary.
Read in a second language or with decoding difficulty Use the mode that reduces decoding friction; audio-plus-print may be useful for some learners Adjust speed, pause at sentence boundaries, and verify subgroup-specific advice with an educator or specialist. Evidence for these populations is not broad enough for a universal rule.

A practical method for learning from print

  1. Set a self-paced target. Decide whether you are reading for a plot, a set of facts, or an argument. A target tells you what to revisit.
  2. Preview the structure. Read the chapter title, headings, diagrams, and summary if present. This creates a map for later details.
  3. Read in manageable sections. At each natural break, pause and state the main point without looking back.
  4. Use selective rereading. Return to sentences that supplied evidence for a conclusion, not automatically to every preceding page.
  5. Test delayed memory. Later the same day or the next day, reconstruct the main ideas from memory before checking the text. The test timing matters, so keep immediate confidence separate from later recall.
  6. Record references when needed. Note page numbers, terms, and quotations during the first pass so a later review does not require searching the whole chapter.

A practical method for learning from an audiobook

  1. Remove competing demands. The comparisons summarized here concern listening and reading as the learning activity; they do not establish a precise comprehension penalty for listening while driving, exercising, or doing other attention-heavy tasks.
  2. Choose a comfortable playback speed. Faster is not automatically better. If you miss relationships between ideas, slow down; if the narration feels effortfully slow, increase it modestly.
  3. Use pause and replay deliberately. Pause after a definition, change of argument, or important event and summarize it in your own words.
  4. Bookmark passages. Mark chapter and time positions when the app permits it, especially for names, terms, or evidence you may need later.
  5. Schedule a retrieval check. After a chapter, list its major points without replaying it. Revisit only the gaps you identify.
  6. Use a short verbal outline. Say the chapter’s sequence, claim-and-evidence structure, or plot turning points aloud. This substitutes for some of the external visual cues that a page provides.

How to use synchronized audio and print without confusing the evidence

Reading while listening can be helpful, but it is not simply “an audiobook plus a page.” It changes the task by supplying two aligned streams and may support word recognition, attention, or tracking for some learners. The 2023 meta-analysis found a small overall benefit over reading alone, with a reliable effect in experimenter-paced studies and no reliable effect in self-paced studies.

  1. Keep the streams synchronized. Follow the displayed text rather than letting audio and page drift apart.
  2. Pause both at conceptual boundaries. Ask what the paragraph established before moving on.
  3. Reduce visual overload. If highlighting, animation, or line tracking distracts you, turn those features off.
  4. Use the combination where it solves a problem. It may help when decoding, pronunciation, or maintaining place is difficult; it is not automatically better for every fluent reader.
  5. Separate first exposure from review. If dual presentation feels busy, read the difficult passage first and add audio only during a later review, or reverse that order.

Audience, language, and text type matter

The population evidence is uneven. Singh and Alexander’s 2022 review covered 32 documents and reported benefits in some younger-learner samples and audio-plus-print benefits for some identified groups. Direct comparisons involving older learners without identified needs and expository texts were relatively scarce. That means a result from a struggling beginning reader cannot be transferred automatically to a fluent adult studying a technical chapter.

Language background and decoding fluency can change which bottleneck limits comprehension. If recognizing printed words consumes most of a learner’s effort, narration may free capacity for meaning; if a listener has difficulty retaining a long spoken sentence, visible text and the ability to look back may help. These are reasons to try a controllable format and monitor actual understanding, not reasons to label one medium universally superior.

Genre also matters independently of modality. The 2021 meta-analysis found stories easier to understand and recall than essays. A narrative’s characters and causal sequence can provide memory cues, whereas an expository text may require holding definitions and qualifications in working memory. When comparing formats, keep the content and difficulty as similar as possible.

What the studies do not prove

  • They do not prove that every audiobook equals every print edition. Narration quality, recording clarity, editing, typography, and the listener’s attention can change an individual experience.
  • They do not prove that listening during multitasking is equivalent to focused listening. That situation was outside the strongest evidence summarized here, so no precise penalty should be assigned to it.
  • They do not make read-and-listen interchangeable with audio-only. The 2023 review tested reading with audio support, not a simple contest between an audiobook and a printed book.
  • They do not justify broad claims about children, older adults, language learners, or disabled readers from one subgroup. The 2022 population review identified gaps in direct comparisons and in expository-text research.
  • They do not turn a non-significant average into proof of identity. A small or non-significant pooled difference can coexist with meaningful advantages for particular tasks or people.
  • They do not show that speed alone determines learning. Playback rate was not a universal treatment in these comparisons; changing speed should be treated as an individual adjustment and checked with recall.

A decision checklist for your next book

  • Will I need to quote, compare, annotate, or locate a detail later? Prefer a format with a visible page or reliable bookmarks.
  • Is the material mostly narrative, or does it build a dense technical argument? Narrative can work well in either mode; dense exposition benefits from easy backtracking.
  • Can I give the book undivided attention? If not, postpone demanding sections or switch to a time when you can focus.
  • Can I control the pace? On audio, confirm that pause, replay, chapter navigation, and speed controls are available.
  • What will count as success? Define a recall or explanation you should be able to produce after the chapter, rather than judging by how effortless it felt.
  • Which format will I actually finish? Completion with active attention is more useful than choosing a theoretically ideal medium and abandoning it.
  • Do I need visual material, equations, tables, or page-linked references? If so, use print or a synchronized version that preserves those elements.
  • What happened after a trial section? Compare your summary and delayed recall, then keep the format that produced clearer evidence of learning.

Bottom line

For comprehension and memory, audiobooks and print are closer competitors than popular advice suggests. The strongest pooled evidence finds no reliable overall winner. Print is the safer starting point when you need self-paced rereading or must draw inferences across dense material; audio is fully defensible for focused listening, especially when pause and replay are available. Read-and-listen can help in some settings, but it is a separate method rather than proof that audio alone is superior. Match the medium to the task, preserve control over pace, and test what you can explain or recall afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do audiobooks count as reading?

They deliver the same written content through listening rather than visual decoding. For comprehension purposes, pooled comparisons do not show a dependable overall disadvantage for listening. Whether an audiobook meets a particular school, work, or personal definition of “reading” is a separate policy question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are audiobooks as good as reading a book?

Often, yes for focused comprehension, because average differences are small and not reliably in favor of either format. Print can help when you need to self-pace, reread, annotate, or draw inferences across dense material. Audio works best when you can pause, replay, and maintain attention.

Do you remember more from reading or listening?

Available memory comparisons show little consistent difference, including on delayed tests. Stories are generally recalled more easily than essays, regardless of presentation mode. Your own delayed-recall check is more informative than assuming print always produces stronger memory.

Is reading better than listening for comprehension?

Not universally. Reading showed modest advantages in self-paced studies and on inferential and general-comprehension measures, while literal comprehension was essentially similar. Those findings support choosing a controllable format for the specific task, not declaring print the universal winner.

Is listening while reading along better than an audiobook alone?

It is a different intervention. A 2023 meta-analysis found a small overall benefit over reading alone, driven by experimenter-paced studies; the benefit was not reliable when reading was self-paced. That result cannot be used to claim that audiobook-only listening beats print-only reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I listen while driving or doing chores and expect the same learning?

The strongest comparisons focused on listening or reading as the learning activity and do not establish a precise penalty for divided attention. For difficult or technical material, use a time when you can pause, replay, and summarize without competing demands.

Which format is best for a technical or academic book?

Start with print when you need equations, definitions, quotations, cross-references, or frequent backtracking. Audio can be useful for a second exposure or for sections that are mainly explanatory. Check your choice by attempting a summary and delayed recall after each section.

The Bottom Line

No single medium wins for every reader or task. Choose print when self-pacing, visual reference, and inference matter; choose an audiobook when focused listening and replay provide better access. Measure success by what you can explain and remember, not by the format’s reputation.
