Use both when you can. A spectrogram turns an animal recording into a time-and-frequency picture that you can inspect, measure, and annotate. AI analyzes recordings at scale by detecting or classifying learned sound patterns, often using spectrograms as an input. The practical workflow is to let a model find candidate events, then listen to those segments and verify their spectrograms and context. Neither a visual trace nor a model score, by itself, proves that a species was present.

The right choice depends on the question. Spectrogram-led review is strongest when you need to understand call structure or investigate an unusual sound. AI is most useful when you have too much audio for manual review and a model that covers the species, call type, and recording conditions. The methods are complementary rather than competing alternatives.

What is the difference between a spectrogram and AI analysis?

A spectrogram is a representation of sound. It plots time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical axis, while color or brightness indicates the amount of acoustic energy. A person can use it to locate a call in a long recording, compare notes, measure duration and frequency, and mark selections for later analysis. The display does not identify an animal on its own; it shows the structure of the signal.

AI analysis is a family of learned methods. A detector may answer “does a target sound occur in this clip?” A classifier may assign one or more possible labels. Other systems produce embeddings, rankings, or probabilities. Depending on the model, the input can be a waveform, engineered acoustic features, a spectrogram, or a combination. The output is an inference constrained by the model’s training data and operating conditions, not a biological observation made independently of the recording.

That distinction matters operationally. A spectrogram gives you a way to inspect the evidence. AI gives you a way to search and prioritize evidence across many files. A defensible result normally uses both: automated screening to reduce the amount of audio a person must review, followed by listening and visual inspection of the selected segments.

What can a spectrogram tell you?

Where a call occurs

In a continuous recording, a spectrogram makes brief events visible as shapes against the background. You can identify the start and end of a note, see whether several notes form a phrase, and distinguish overlapping events when their frequency bands differ. Marking a time-frequency selection lets you return to exactly the same event and share it with another analyst.

How the call is structured

Simple tonal calls may appear as narrow horizontal traces. Sweeps, whistles, trills, clicks, and harmonically rich sounds produce different contours and bands. Repeated elements can reveal rhythm and phrase organization. These visual patterns help a trained listener compare recordings without relying only on memory of what was heard.

Measurements you can make

With an appropriately calibrated display, you can measure duration, start and end frequency, peak frequency, bandwidth, inter-note interval, and the timing of amplitude changes. Measurements are meaningful only when the recording’s sample rate, calibration, and analysis settings are known. A display optimized to reveal a short transient may hide fine frequency differences, while a display optimized for frequency precision can blur timing.

What the display cannot establish

A shape that resembles a familiar call is not proof of species identity. Different species can produce similar patterns, one species can vary by sex, age, behavior, season, or geography, and noise can create misleading lines. A spectrogram also cannot recover information that the microphone never captured. Clipping, low signal-to-noise ratio, limited bandwidth, and overlapping callers can make interpretation uncertain even when the picture looks clear.

How do I analyze an animal call with a spectrogram?

  1. Obtain the original recording. Keep the unedited file, its sample rate, date, time, location, recorder settings, and any notes about weather or habitat. Work from a copy when filtering or normalizing so that the evidence remains reproducible.
  2. Open a waveform and spectrogram together. The waveform shows overall amplitude and helps you navigate; the spectrogram shows frequency structure. Cornell describes Raven Lite as free software for recording, saving, and viewing sounds as waveforms and spectrograms, aimed at students, educators, and hobbyists: Raven Software.
  3. Survey the entire file at a broad scale. Scan for candidate events before zooming in. Note background noise, simultaneous callers, and long periods with no obvious signal. A broad view prevents you from treating an isolated, ambiguous fragment as the whole context.
  4. Listen to every candidate. Play the original audio around the selection, not only a cropped or enhanced excerpt. Hearing the lead-in and trailing sounds can reveal another species, a human source, or an artifact that the selected image does not show.
  5. Adjust time and frequency resolution deliberately. Short analysis windows preserve timing of clicks and rapid notes but provide less precise frequency information. Longer windows improve frequency detail but smear short events. Use a setting that matches the call, and record the settings with your annotation.
  6. Mark and describe the event. Save the time range, frequency range, label used, confidence of the human reviewer, and any contextual observations. If several analysts will work on the project, agree on selection and labeling rules before reviewing the bulk of the files.
  7. Export selections and metadata. Preserve links between each annotation and the source file. This allows a later model run, quality check, or second reviewer to reproduce the decision.

Visual review is especially valuable for unusual calls, detailed bioacoustic measurements, and small datasets where a person can listen to every candidate. It becomes less practical when recordings run for thousands of hours, which is where automated screening can help.

Can AI identify animal sounds?

AI can produce candidate identifications or detections when a suitable model has been trained for the target classes and recording conditions. It cannot identify every animal sound, and a high score is not equivalent to confirmed presence. Before running a model, check its supported taxa, call types, geographic assumptions, version, segmentation method, and expected input format.

Detection versus classification

A detector searches for an event of interest and reports where it may occur. A classifier compares an event with several learned classes and returns labels with scores or probabilities. A system can perform both jobs, but the two outputs answer different questions. A detector configured for one species may miss a different species that sounds similar; a broad classifier may return several plausible labels for an ambiguous segment.

BirdNET as an example of spectrogram-based AI

BirdNET’s documented pipeline illustrates how the methods connect. Audio is captured at 48 kHz, divided into three-second segments, and converted into two log-scaled Mel spectrograms before a convolutional neural network analyzes them. Initial predictions are cross-referenced with local date and location metadata. In other words, the model is learning patterns in a spectrogram representation; the spectrogram is not being replaced by AI. See the project’s explanation at About BirdNET.

The 2021 BirdNET paper described a model classifying 984 bird species. That figure belongs to the model and study reported in that paper, not to a current universal BirdNET coverage claim: Kahl, Wood, Eibl, and Klinck (2021). Current supported classes can change with software and model releases, so consult the version-specific documentation.

AI beyond spectrogram images

Not every audio model uses a spectrogram, and not every model is designed for species identification. Some systems operate directly on waveforms or on numerical representations learned from audio. BirdNET is a documented example, not a rule that applies to all machine-learning systems. Treat the model’s technical documentation as the authority for its input, output, and limitations.

What are the strengths and limits of each method?

Dimension Spectrogram-led inspection AI-assisted analysis
Primary job Visualize call structure and support locating, measuring, and annotating events. Detect or classify target sounds across clips or large collections.
Typical output A time-frequency display, measurements, and human annotations. Candidate detections, labels, confidence or probability values, and structured result files.
Main strength A person can inspect context and unusual shapes without being limited to a predefined label. A model can screen many recordings consistently and rapidly once a suitable workflow is configured.
Main constraint Manual review takes time, and settings and interpretation affect what is visible. Scope and errors depend on training data, segmentation, target species, sound conditions, and threshold; results need validation.
Good practice Listen while inspecting, choose resolution appropriate to the signal, and preserve annotations and settings. Check model coverage, preserve metadata, review false alarms, and evaluate against a human-annotated reference when the decision warrants it.

There is no universal accuracy number that fairly compares the two approaches across species, call types, environments, and model versions. A person and a model can make different mistakes, so a project should define what counts as an acceptable miss or false alarm rather than declare one method the winner.

How to combine spectrogram review and AI in one workflow

  1. Define the biological question. Decide whether you need presence screening, a count of calling events, a species list, a measurement of call structure, or evidence about behavior. The question determines whether you need a detector, classifier, measurement protocol, or several of them.
  2. Prepare and document the audio. Keep original files and metadata. Record microphone placement, sample rate, date, time, location, weather, and any gain or filtering applied. Consistent metadata allows geographic and date filters to be used where a model supports them.
  3. Perform a manual orientation pass. Inspect representative recordings and listen for target calls, recurring noise, clipping, and overlapping sources. This pass helps you choose segment length, frequency range, and a realistic threshold for automated screening.
  4. Check model coverage before processing everything. Confirm that the model includes the species or sound class and the call type you care about. A bird-focused model cannot answer a question about a whale or insect, and a model trained on songs may not recognize alarm calls or juvenile vocalizations.
  5. Run automated screening. Process the collection in batches and retain the model version, settings, thresholds, and output file. The open-source BirdNET-Analyzer documentation describes batch-processing workflows for bird recordings; its project page also documents exports for Raven Pro and Audacity: BirdNET-Analyzer.
  6. Review candidate segments with audio and spectrograms. Open the original segment, listen around the predicted event, and inspect whether the visual structure is plausible. Check neighboring segments because a call may cross a segmentation boundary or contain context needed to distinguish similar sources.
  7. Log confirmations and false alarms. Do not save only accepted detections. Record rejected candidates and the reason for rejection, such as insect noise, rain, a vehicle, or a non-target species. This record exposes systematic errors and helps tune thresholds or improve a custom detector.
  8. Report conclusions at the level supported by evidence. A validated detection can support a claim that a call consistent with a target class occurred in a recording. It does not automatically establish abundance, population size, behavior, or ecological impact.

Which approach fits common animal-call projects?

You have a short recording and need detailed measurements

Start with a spectrogram and direct listening. Choose resolution that preserves the feature you intend to measure, annotate the event boundaries, and have a second reviewer check ambiguous selections. AI may be useful as a comparison, but it is not necessary when the dataset is small and every event can be examined.

You have months of unattended recordings

Use AI to rank or filter the archive, then review a representative sample of detections and false alarms with spectrograms and audio. Keep a random or systematic set of non-detections for checking misses; reviewing only model-positive clips can make performance look better than it is.

The call is unusual or outside a model’s label set

Favor human spectrogram inspection and listening. A classifier must assign an out-of-scope sound to one of the classes it knows, which can produce a confident-looking but meaningless label. You can still use a general detector to locate acoustic events, but treat its labels as exploratory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need a repeatable survey protocol

Combine a fixed recording protocol, a documented model version and threshold, and a human review rule for candidate events. Build a reference set of human-annotated clips before making a performance statement. The reference set should include difficult background conditions, not only clean examples.

Why AI produces false positives

The 2021 BirdNET paper lists several common sources of false-positive detections in the studied system:

  • Other vocalizing animals, including insects, anurans, and mammals.
  • Geophysical noise such as wind, rain, and thunder.
  • Human vocal and non-vocal sounds.
  • Urban sounds such as cars, planes, and sirens.
  • Electronic noise from the recorder.

That list describes observed error sources, not a current universal error rate. A different model, habitat, microphone, or threshold can change which errors dominate. A recording with the target species absent can still contain patterns that fall inside the model’s learned decision boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to validate a model’s detections

Verify scope and context

Confirm the model’s supported species or sound classes and call types. Check whether the recording’s geography and date fit any contextual filters. Metadata can improve ranking, but it cannot repair a recording that is clipped, dominated by noise, or outside the model’s training distribution.

Listen and inspect every reported event in the validation sample

Play the original audio around each detection and examine the spectrogram. Look for a call structure that is acoustically plausible, while also checking for masking, overlapping sources, and artifacts. If you cannot hear or see a credible event, mark the candidate as unresolved rather than forcing a label.

Search for misses

Review some clips with no model detection, especially clips selected by time or by a human observer. False negatives are invisible if you inspect only positive results. Include difficult conditions such as distance, wind, rain, and multiple callers.

Build a truth table when performance matters

Create a carefully defined human-annotated reference set and compare model results with it. Count true positives, false positives, and false negatives under the exact threshold and segmentation settings used in production. Raven Pro’s detector-review workflow explicitly supports comparison with a human-created truth table. A 2024 Frontiers in Bird Science study on machine-learning detection of mountain chickadee songs illustrates why evaluation must stay tied to the target species, recordings, and detector setup; it does not establish accuracy for all animal-call models: Haley et al. (2024).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the claim to match the evidence

A score or label can prioritize a clip for review. A human-confirmed event can support a presence statement for that recording. Neither alone proves population abundance, repeated occupancy, behavior, or an ecological effect. Those stronger claims require study designs and evidence beyond a single automated detection.

Practical decisions that improve results

  • Keep raw files. Filtering, noise reduction, and resampling can make a display easier to read but may remove features needed for later review.
  • Preserve version information. Save the model name, software version, threshold, segment length, and date of processing with the result.
  • Separate discovery from confirmation. Use permissive settings to find candidates, then apply a documented human-review rule before counting confirmed events.
  • Inspect the background. If the same false alarm appears whenever a fan, road, rainstorm, or recorder circuit is active, treat it as a site-specific confounder rather than evidence of a species.
  • Use consistent annotations. Define whether overlapping calls, partial calls, and uncertain events are included before multiple reviewers begin.
  • Do not infer coverage from a product name. Confirm the actual model classes and release documentation; support for one bird list or call type does not imply support for mammals, insects, whales, or every vocalization of a supported species.

Should I use a spectrogram or AI?

Use a spectrogram when the central question is “what does this sound look and measure like?” It is the better first tool for close listening, unusual calls, annotation, and explaining evidence to another person. Use AI when the question is “which parts of this large archive deserve attention?” and a model exists for the target class and conditions. Combine them when possible: let automation surface candidates, then use the original audio, spectrogram, metadata, and human judgment to accept, reject, or leave each candidate unresolved.

The most reliable method is therefore task-specific rather than universal. Match the model and display settings to the animal and call, document the recording context, and keep conclusions proportional to what was actually verified.
