Several audio brands offer credible alternatives to Sony, but the strongest match depends on the product and what matters most: Soundcore is a value-oriented earbud pick, EarFun stands out for long battery life in over-ear headphones, Nothing emphasizes earbud customization, and JBL offers a budget option with sound and battery advantages over a specific rival. Audio-Technica belongs on the list only for studio or production use, not as a proven Sony-style noise-cancelling alternative.

How these brands compare with Sony

There is no single brand-wide answer: compare the exact model and format, such as earbuds against earbuds or over-ear headphones against over-ear headphones. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 is a useful premium earbud reference point, but the available evidence does not establish that every alternative below matches it across noise cancellation (ANC), sound, calls, comfort, and software.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide gives the Sony WF-1000XM5 an overall score of 86 and the Soundcore Space A40 a score of 73. These are named-model scores, not brand rankings, and should not be read as a controlled head-to-head result across every relevant feature. Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2026

Soundcore: value-focused earbuds with a credible ANC shortlist

Soundcore is the best starting point if you want to spend less than you would on Sony’s premium earbuds. RTINGS named the Soundcore Space A40 its budget pick in its 2026 wireless-earbuds guide. Consumer Reports lists the Space A40 at 73 overall, and Soundcore Life Q20 and Q20i at 72 overall in its 2026 guide; those Q-series models are headphones, not earbuds. #1 Best Overall
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black
  • Advanced build quality and engineering; Designed for studio tracking and mixing
  • 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
  • Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
  • Convenient single side cable exit

For a more premium earbud comparison, RTINGS added the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro as a mid-range pick in its August 18, 2026 update. RTINGS says its ANC comes close to the Sony WF-1000XM6, though Sony attenuates bass and treble more effectively. That is a specific comparison of noise cancellation, not proof of equal overall performance. RTINGS 2026 wireless-earbuds guide

Choose Soundcore when price and noise cancellation are priorities; check the individual model’s fit, sound profile, microphone performance, and app features before treating it as a substitute for a Sony flagship.

EarFun: an over-ear option for long listening sessions

The EarFun Wave Pro X is an over-ear headphone, so compare it with Sony over-ear models rather than its earbuds. TechRadar reported that it became available in August 2026 at $129.99 in the US and £119.99 in the UK. Those are market-specific prices reported at launch, not a promise of current pricing or availability. TechRadar’s EarFun Wave Pro X review

EarFun estimates up to 90 hours of playback with ANC off and 50 hours with ANC on. TechRadar’s reviewer said testing broadly matched the estimates. Treat these as manufacturer figures assessed in one review, not a standardized battery comparison against Sony. TechRadar’s EarFun Wave Pro X review

Consider the Wave Pro X if endurance and a lower launch price matter more than buying into a premium Sony model. Check current local pricing and review model-specific evidence for ANC, comfort, calls, and sound before deciding.

Nothing: earbuds with useful customization and connectivity features

Nothing’s Ear (a) is a budget earbud option with Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC support, multipoint connectivity, a low-lag gaming mode, in-ear detection, and a “Find My Earbuds” feature, according to TechRadar’s budget-headphone guide. It does not include wireless charging or spatial audio, so those omissions may matter if either is part of your routine. TechRadar’s cheap-headphones guide

Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black, Professional Grade, Critically Acclaimed, with Detachable Cable
  • Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers
  • Proprietary 45 millimeter large aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils

  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
  • 90 degree swiveling earcups for easy, one ear monitoring, and professional grade earpad and headband material delivers more durability and comfort

RTINGS describes the Nothing Ear (3a) as offering expanded sound customization, while saying its noise isolation falls short of the Soundcore Space A40. That finding concerns the named model; it should not be applied automatically to Ear (a) or every Nothing product. RTINGS 2026 wireless-earbuds guide

Pick a Nothing model when its particular controls, connectivity, or sound adjustments suit you. Check compatibility for the features you plan to use, especially LDAC, and weigh the missing charging and spatial-audio features on Ear (a).

JBL: a budget alternative with model-specific trade-offs

RTINGS says the JBL Vibe Beam 2 has longer continuous battery life and more balanced out-of-box sound than the Soundcore P31i, but weaker ANC and microphone noise handling. This comparison makes JBL a possible fit if you value battery and an immediately balanced sound, but not if stronger noise cancellation or cleaner calls in noisy surroundings are essential. RTINGS 2026 wireless-earbuds guide

Consumer Reports lists the JBL Live 660NC at 71 overall in its 2026 Buying Guide. It is a different model and format from the Vibe Beam 2, so that score does not rank JBL as a brand or establish a direct comparison with Sony earbuds. Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2026

Audio-Technica: a qualified choice for studio and production work

Audio-Technica is relevant if “compete with Sony” includes wired or production headphones rather than only consumer ANC products. RTINGS says Audio-Technica or Beyerdynamic may provide better value than Shure for some audio producers. That supports a narrow studio-use consideration, not a current, model-specific comparison with Sony noise-cancelling headphones. RTINGS 2026 headphone and earbud brand guide

For monitoring or production, first identify the exact Audio-Technica model and verify that it suits your work and equipment. Do not assume studio value translates into better ANC, wireless features, or everyday convenience.

Choose by the trade-off you care about

  • Value and earbud ANC: Start with Soundcore Space A40; consider Liberty 5 Pro if you want a mid-range model and accept the specific ANC gap RTINGS notes against Sony WF-1000XM6.
  • Over-ear battery life: Look at EarFun Wave Pro X, keeping its stated battery estimates and launch pricing in their reported context.
  • Connectivity and customization: Compare the exact Nothing model’s features with your phone and listening habits; Ear (a) lacks wireless charging and spatial audio.
  • Budget sound and battery: JBL Vibe Beam 2 has advantages over Soundcore P31i on those two dimensions, with weaker ANC and microphone noise handling.
  • Studio or production work: Consider Audio-Technica only after checking the exact model for the job; the cited evidence does not establish a Sony consumer-ANC equivalent.
