Audio bit depth is the number of binary digits used to represent the amplitude of each digital audio sample. In PCM audio, greater bit depth provides more possible amplitude values, reducing quantization error and increasing the format’s theoretical dynamic range. It does not determine how many samples are captured per second—that is the sample rate.
What bit depth means in digital audio
A digital recording represents a changing sound wave as a sequence of samples. Each sample stores the wave’s amplitude at one moment. Because a digital format has a finite number of values, it rounds each measured amplitude to the closest available value; this process is called quantization. The difference between the original amplitude and the stored value is quantization error, which is heard as noise in a basic model.
Bit depth determines how many amplitude values are available for each sample. More bits mean more possible values, so the digital representation can track amplitude more precisely. Audacity defines bit depth as the number of binary digits used to carry the data in each audio sample (Audacity Manual: Sample Format – Bit Depth).

Bit depth and sample rate do different jobs
Bit depth concerns amplitude resolution; sample rate is the number of samples taken per second, measured in hertz. These are separate properties of digital audio. Sample rate relates to how the signal is represented over time and frequency, while bit depth relates to the amplitude values recorded at each sample. Raising bit depth does not increase sample rate or frequency response (Audacity Manual: Digital Audio Fundamentals).

How bit depth relates to dynamic range
Dynamic range describes the difference between the loudest and quietest levels a format or system can represent. More integer bits allow a format to represent a wider theoretical range and reduce quantization noise. Audacity’s nominal format comparisons are approximately 96 dB for 16-bit integer and 145 dB for 24-bit integer. Adobe gives 144 dB as an approximate 24-bit figure and notes that 24-bit provides 16,777,216 amplitude values (Audacity Manual; Adobe Audition documentation). These are format-level figures, not promises about the usable dynamic range of a particular recording.
Real-world performance is also limited by the microphone, preamp, converter, recording environment and source noise. A format’s theoretical range can exceed what the rest of the signal chain can capture or reproduce. The Audio Engineering Society likewise frames high-resolution audio in terms of sampling rates and bit depths above CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16 bits, rather than treating either number as a guarantee of audible superiority (AES: High-Resolution Audio).

16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit float: where each fits
| Format | Typical role | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 16-bit integer | Standard audio-CD delivery | Audacity lists approximately 96 dB nominal dynamic range. It is suitable for many finished consumer deliverables. |
| 24-bit integer | Recording, mixing and mastering workflows | Provides more amplitude codes and theoretical range than 16-bit. Converter and source performance limit the realized benefit; published nominal figures are approximately 144 dB from Adobe and 145 dB from Audacity. |
| 32-bit float | Editing and intermediate processing | Audacity uses 32-bit float internally and recommends it for editing headroom. Its large processing range is not equivalent to a microphone or converter capturing near-infinite acoustic dynamic range. |
For recording and later processing
24-bit integer capture is a common choice when a recording will be mixed or mastered later. The extra available levels let you preserve headroom instead of recording close to full scale, while the recording chain still determines its practical noise and usable range. For preservation reformatting, the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative glossary reports an International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives recommendation of at least 24-bit (FADGI: Bit depth (audio) – Glossary).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor editing
Floating-point audio is useful as a working format because it can represent intermediate processing values above 0 dBFS. This can prevent permanent clipping during some editing operations, but it cannot repair clipping that occurred in the analog input or converter before the audio reached the editor. Audacity’s 32-bit float processing range should not be interpreted as the dynamic range of the recording hardware (Audacity Manual: Digital Audio Fundamentals).

For CD delivery
Standard audio CD uses 16-bit, 44.1 kHz PCM. If a project was edited at higher precision, export it to the required delivery format. When reducing bit depth from a higher-precision working format, dither may be appropriate: it adds low-level noise to randomize quantization error. Audacity says dither when exporting from 32-bit float to 16-bit can improve the result (Audacity Manual: Sample Format – Bit Depth).
Does higher bit depth sound better?
Not automatically. A higher bit depth can lower quantization noise and increase theoretical dynamic range, but the audible result depends on the recording, its noise floor, the converters and the playback chain. If the source or equipment does not provide the extra usable range, a larger bit-depth number alone does not guarantee an audible improvement. The AES discussion of high-resolution audio emphasizes the signal chain and perceptual questions, not bit depth as a standalone quality promise (AES: High-Resolution Audio).

How bit depth affects file size
For uncompressed PCM, increasing bit depth increases the sample data. With channel count, sample rate and duration held constant, Audacity says a 32-bit file is twice the size of a 16-bit file. Actual file size also depends on those other settings and on whether compression is used (Audacity Manual: Sample Format – Bit Depth).

Choosing a bit depth by workflow
- Making standard audio CD: Deliver 16-bit, 44.1 kHz PCM.
- Recording for later mixing or mastering: Choose 24-bit integer when the workflow benefits from additional headroom and processing flexibility.
- Editing audio: Use a floating-point working format when available for processing headroom; this does not undo clipping already present in the source.
- Reducing bit depth at export: Consider dither when converting to a lower integer depth, particularly for a 16-bit deliverable.
- Listening to finished music: Do not assume a higher bit depth will be audible; consider the source and the entire playback chain.
