The Audeze LCD-X is a wired, open-back planar magnetic headphone that may suit immersive gaming and music listening, but it is not an all-purpose gaming headset. Its 612 g listed weight, open-back sound leakage and lack of a built-in microphone are practical trade-offs; whether it needs a separate amplifier depends on the output of your existing source and how loudly you listen. The available evidence does not establish that it gives players a competitive advantage or that it is universally comfortable.
What the LCD-X is—and what it is not
Audeze describes the LCD-X as an over-ear, open-back planar magnetic headphone. Its product page lists 106 mm transducers, 20-ohm impedance, 103 dB/1 mW sensitivity, a 10 Hz–50 kHz frequency response and a weight of 612 g. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. Audeze’s LCD-X product page describes the open design as supporting a natural soundstage and spatial positioning; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not proof of accuracy in a particular game.
For gaming, the key distinction is that the LCD-X is a headphone, not a headset with a built-in gaming microphone. You will need a separate mic or another chat solution if you want voice communication. Its open earcups also let sound pass in and out, so it is a poor fit when you need isolation or must avoid disturbing people nearby.

Is the LCD-X good for gaming?
It may be a good fit for players who want an open headphone for immersive listening and already have a practical way to handle voice chat. But the available evidence does not establish controlled positional accuracy or a competitive edge. Soundstage—the perceived scale and openness of sound—and imaging—the perceived placement of individual sounds—are related listening judgments, not interchangeable guarantees of locating opponents correctly. Results depend on the game’s audio mix, the player, the source and the listening environment.

Think about your main use before buying: an open headphone can be appealing for immersive single-player games, music or work in a quiet space, while chat convenience, isolation and a lighter fit may matter more for other setups. Audeze markets the separate LCD-GX as a gaming headset and says its design is aimed at reducing weight and supporting marathon gaming sessions. That positioning provides context, not evidence that it will outperform the LCD-X for every player. Audeze’s LCD-GX product page
Will it be comfortable for long sessions?
Audeze lists the LCD-X at 612 g. That makes fit and weight tolerance important checks, particularly if you plan to wear it through a long gaming session. Comfort is personal: head shape, fit, session length and individual preference all matter. The specification alone cannot establish whether it will feel comfortable to you, so try it on if you can, or check the seller’s return terms before purchasing.

Does the LCD-X need an amplifier?
Audeze lists minimum recommended power above 100 mW and recommended power above 250 mW. Those recommendations can help you assess a headphone output, but they do not mean every owner needs a separate amplifier. Check the specifications for the output you plan to use and consider whether it can provide the recommended power at your intended listening level. If you are unsure, consult the source maker’s specifications rather than buying an amplifier by default; listening levels and preferences vary. Audeze lists the LCD-X’s power guidance and other specifications on its product page.

Revision can matter when comparing reviews or shopping second-hand. RTINGS’ review, updated June 23, 2026, reports that units produced before 2021 have a different frequency response, including a large dip around 4 kHz. That means older listening impressions should not automatically be treated as representative of later production. Ask the seller about the unit’s production date or revision where possible, and compare reviews that identify which version they discuss. RTINGS’ Audeze LCD-X review

How does its soundstage compare?
A Headphones.com review of the 2021 revision describes a spacious presentation, but says its soundstage is not as impressive as the HD800S or Arya in that reviewer’s comparison. That is one reviewer’s listening assessment, not a universal measurement and not a gaming-performance result. Headphones.com’s review of the 2021 LCD-X revision
Audeze’s product page also features a testimonial from musician Scott Hansen of Tycho, who says the LCD-X has the accuracy, low-frequency response and soundstage to replace a studio monitoring environment. This is a customer testimonial hosted by the manufacturer, not an independent test result. Audeze’s LCD-X product page

Who should consider the LCD-X?
- Consider it if you want a wired, open-back headphone for music and immersive listening, accept sound leakage, and have a separate chat-microphone plan for gaming.
- Check carefully first if you are sensitive to headphone weight, need a quiet listening experience around other people, or plan to use a source whose output capability is unclear.
- Look elsewhere for your use case if you require a built-in gaming microphone, strong passive isolation or a proven competitive advantage. The evidence cited here does not establish those benefits for the LCD-X.
