Choose AUD/USD when your trade thesis is mainly about the Australian dollar versus US-dollar policy, US data or broad dollar moves. Choose AUD/JPY when your thesis is about Australia–Japan rate expectations, yen-funded carry or changes in global risk appetite. Neither pair is universally better. The practical choice depends on the macro relationship you can monitor, your holding period and risk tolerance, and your broker’s live spread, financing and execution conditions.
Quick comparison
| Factor | AUD/USD | AUD/JPY |
|---|---|---|
| Quotation | US dollars needed to buy one Australian dollar | Japanese yen needed to buy one Australian dollar |
| Primary policy comparison | Reserve Bank of Australia versus US Federal Reserve expectations | Reserve Bank of Australia versus Bank of Japan expectations |
| Typical macro emphasis | US-dollar direction, Australian data, commodities and global growth | Australia–Japan yield spread, carry conditions and risk sentiment |
| Risk-off sensitivity | Can be pressured by broad US-dollar safe-haven demand | Can be pressured by yen safe-haven demand and carry-trade unwinds |
| Historical liquidity context | RBA reported about US$450 billion in total AUD turnover per day in April 2019 and identified AUD/USD as the fourth most traded currency pair in that survey | No directly comparable AUD/JPY figure is established in the cited RBA material |
| Best starting question | Is the Australian dollar likely to strengthen or weaken against the US dollar? | Will Australian–Japanese policy expectations and risk appetite support or undermine the Australian dollar against the yen? |
The 2019 turnover and ranking are historical global-survey figures, not current rankings or a promise of better retail execution. Your broker’s current conditions may differ substantially by account region, session and instrument.
How the two quotations work
Both pairs put the Australian dollar first, so AUD is the base currency. The second currency is the quote currency and determines what one Australian dollar is worth.

AUD/USD
AUD/USD at 0.6600 means one Australian dollar is quoted at 0.6600 US dollars. If the quote rises to 0.6700, the Australian dollar has appreciated against the US dollar. If it falls to 0.6500, the Australian dollar has depreciated against the US dollar.

AUD/JPY
AUD/JPY at 98.00 means one Australian dollar is quoted at 98 Japanese yen. A rise to 100.00 represents Australian-dollar appreciation against the yen; a fall to 96.00 represents depreciation.
Why the quote currency changes the trade
A long position in either pair buys AUD, but it sells a different currency. A long AUD/USD position is simultaneously long AUD and short USD. A long AUD/JPY position is long AUD and short JPY. That distinction changes which central-bank decisions, bond yields, safe-haven flows and economic releases matter most.
The Reserve Bank of Australia explains that exchange rates can also be calculated as cross rates using a third currency. In practice, AUD/JPY is related to AUD/USD and USD/JPY, although bid–ask spreads, timing and execution mean a broker’s tradable prices will not combine perfectly tick for tick.
What drives both pairs
Relative interest-rate expectations
Interest-rate differentials influence demand for Australian-dollar assets, but the relevant comparison is relative and forward-looking. Traders react to expected policy paths, not only to the current cash rate. A shift in expectations for the RBA can move the AUD leg in both pairs; the quote currency then adds its own policy response.
For AUD/USD, compare the Australian outlook with the US outlook. Stronger expected Australian rates, or lower expected US rates, can support AUD/USD. The opposite combination can weigh on it. For AUD/JPY, compare Australia with Japan. A widening expected Australian advantage can support AUD/JPY, while a narrowing advantage can remove support even if Australian data remain firm.
Policy expectations can change quickly after inflation, employment, growth or central-bank communication. Use current official RBA, Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan information when forming a live view; a historical rate gap is not a trading signal by itself.
Commodities and Australia’s terms of trade
Australia’s export prices affect its terms of trade, which is the relationship between export and import prices. The RBA says higher terms of trade are generally associated with Australian-dollar appreciation. Commodity prices can therefore influence the AUD component of both AUD/USD and AUD/JPY.
The relationship is not fixed. Commodity moves can reflect global growth, supply disruptions, Chinese demand or a broad US-dollar move, and the exchange rate can respond differently in different periods. Treat commodities as part of a wider AUD thesis rather than as a mechanical trigger.
Global risk sentiment and safe-haven demand
Periods of heightened volatility and risk aversion can produce sharp AUD moves. Investors may seek traditionally defensive currencies, including the US dollar and the yen, while reducing exposure to higher-beta currencies such as the Australian dollar.

AUD/JPY has an especially visible connection with risk-sensitive positioning because the yen has often been used as a lower-yielding funding currency. That does not make AUD/JPY a guaranteed risk-on or risk-off gauge. The response depends on the event, current positioning and the policy outlook.
AUD/USD can also fall during a risk-off episode because of both weaker AUD demand and US-dollar safe-haven demand. Do not describe either pair as a stable hedge without evidence for the specific period and position size.
When AUD/USD may fit your strategy
US-dollar and Federal Reserve themes
AUD/USD may be the cleaner expression when your thesis is built around US inflation, employment, Federal Reserve communication or broad US-dollar direction. You can focus on one major quote currency rather than combining an AUD view with a yen-specific view.
Australian data against a large, widely followed market
Australian employment, inflation, growth and RBA communication affect the base currency, while US data and policy affect the quote currency. This creates two-sided catalysts. It can suit a trader who follows both economies and wants a pair with extensive global attention.
Potentially simpler cross-rate interpretation
Because AUD/USD is a direct major-currency quotation, traders often organize analysis around a single AUD-versus-USD chart and a broad dollar context. That is a workflow advantage, not evidence that the pair will be less volatile or more profitable.
Limitations
- A strong AUD thesis can still lose if the US dollar strengthens more than expected against major currencies.
- US data released during your market hours can create rapid moves and slippage.
- Commodity support for AUD may be overwhelmed by a global flight to US-dollar liquidity.
- The pair’s apparent popularity does not guarantee your broker will offer the tightest spread or best fill.
When AUD/JPY may fit your strategy
Australia–Japan policy divergence
AUD/JPY directly expresses the relative outlook for the RBA and the Bank of Japan. It may suit a trader who tracks Japanese inflation, wage developments, policy guidance and changes in Australian–Japanese yield expectations rather than concentrating on US data.

The RBA describes carry trading as borrowing in a lower-yielding currency such as the yen and investing in a higher-yielding currency such as the Australian dollar. A long AUD/JPY position can resemble that trade when the Australian interest rate is higher than Japan’s and the broker’s financing terms reflect the difference.
Carry is not free income. The interest advantage can be erased by a small adverse exchange-rate move, and a larger move can produce substantial losses. Volatility can trigger synchronized carry-trade unwinds as traders close positions and buy back the funding currency.
Risk-sentiment and positioning themes
AUD/JPY can be useful when your thesis combines Australian growth or commodity strength with continued appetite for risk. It can also provide a direct way to express concern that a volatility shock will strengthen the yen and undermine the Australian dollar.

Limitations
- Japanese policy surprises can move the yen sharply even when Australian conditions are unchanged.
- Risk-off flows can reverse months of accumulated carry quickly.
- Overnight financing may be positive, negative or variable depending on the broker, account currency, day-of-week conventions and contract structure.
- The pair may reflect two moving legs at once, making attribution harder than a simple AUD-only narrative.
Carry-trade economics: why the yield gap is not enough
For a long AUD/JPY position, the expected result combines three components: the AUD/JPY price change, financing credited or debited by the broker, and trading costs such as spread and commission. A positive Australian–Japanese interest differential may contribute to financing income, but it does not determine the net result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider an illustrative, not predictive, example. Suppose a trader buys AUD/JPY because the expected annualized interest advantage appears to be 3 percentage points. If the pair falls 4 percent while the position is held, the currency loss is larger than the gross interest differential before spread, commission, tax and financing adjustments. If volatility forces an early exit, the realized carry may be much smaller than the headline annualized figure.
Check the broker’s published swap schedule and the exact product specification. Some brokers apply separate long and short rates, markups, triple-swap days or holiday adjustments. The rate can change when market funding conditions or broker policies change. Never size a trade on the assumption that today’s financing credit will remain constant.
Costs, liquidity and execution
Compare live conditions, not pair stereotypes
The cited RBA material does not provide a current, matched retail comparison of AUD/USD and AUD/JPY spreads, volatility or execution. Before choosing, record the conditions shown for your own account:
- Typical and event-time bid–ask spread.
- Long and short overnight financing or swap.
- Commission, minimum trade size and margin requirement.
- Slippage statistics or execution policy, if published.
- Trading hours, rollover time and holiday treatment.
- Whether the instrument is spot forex, a contract for difference, a futures contract or another structure.
Costs vary by jurisdiction, liquidity provider, account tier and market session. A pair that looks attractive on a chart can be unsuitable if its financing or execution terms conflict with your holding period.
What the historical RBA liquidity figure does—and does not—tell you
The RBA reported global AUD trading of around US$450 billion per day in April 2019 and identified AUD/USD as the fourth most traded currency pair in that survey. Those figures establish historical market context. They do not provide a current AUD/USD-versus-AUD/JPY ranking, a retail spread, a guarantee of execution quality or a forecast of future liquidity.
A decision framework for choosing the pair
Use the following sequence before opening a position. It prevents a familiar chart or a quoted carry rate from substituting for a complete thesis.
- State the base-currency view. Write what should make the Australian dollar strengthen or weaken: RBA expectations, domestic data, commodities, global growth or risk appetite.
- Choose the quote-currency thesis. For AUD/USD, specify the US-dollar or Federal Reserve view. For AUD/JPY, specify the Japanese policy and yen-risk view.
- Check whether both legs agree. A bullish AUD view is not enough if you expect an even stronger quote currency. Compare the expected direction of each leg.
- Match the thesis to the holding period. A data-release trade may last minutes or days; a carry thesis generally requires tolerance for overnight financing and drawdowns.
- Measure event concentration. List the next relevant RBA, Federal Reserve or Bank of Japan decisions, major inflation and employment releases, and known market holidays.
- Price the actual position. Compare spread, swap, commission, margin and expected slippage for the account you will use.
- Define invalidation before entry. Identify the policy change, data surprise, price level or volatility condition that proves the thesis wrong.
| If your main thesis is… | First pair to investigate | What could invalidate it |
|---|---|---|
| Australian policy becomes relatively more supportive than US policy | AUD/USD | US yields or safe-haven demand rise enough to strengthen USD |
| Australian policy becomes relatively more supportive than Japanese policy | AUD/JPY | BoJ expectations shift, yen strengthens or risk sentiment deteriorates |
| Global growth and commodity demand improve with stable volatility | AUD/USD or AUD/JPY, selected after quote-currency analysis | Commodity gains fail to improve terms of trade or a risk shock dominates |
| Carry income is the central objective | AUD/JPY only after verifying financing and downside tolerance | Exchange-rate loss, swap change or carry unwind exceeds income |
| US-dollar direction is the only quote-currency view you can monitor | AUD/USD | Australian-specific shock or an unexpected US safe-haven move |
Three illustrative strategy scenarios
Scenario 1: RBA support, neutral US outlook
A trader expects Australian policy expectations to firm while the US outlook changes little. AUD/USD may be the more direct expression because the quote-currency thesis is relatively simple. The trader should still check commodity conditions, US data risk and the broker’s event-time spread. This is an example of instrument fit, not a forecast.
Scenario 2: Australian–Japanese yield gap and calm markets
A trader expects the Australian–Japanese rate differential to remain favorable and believes volatility will stay contained. AUD/JPY may fit a carry-oriented plan, provided the position is sized for an adverse yen move and the financing credit is verified. A stop or exit rule is essential because a single risk shock can reverse the premise.

Scenario 3: Sudden global risk aversion
A trader sees a volatility shock and expects defensive currencies to attract demand. AUD/JPY may face pressure from both lower AUD demand and yen buying; AUD/USD may face pressure from AUD selling and US-dollar demand. The trader should not assume one pair is a guaranteed hedge. The correct response depends on the event, existing exposure and execution conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risk management for either pair
Size from the stop distance
Set the maximum cash loss first, then calculate position size from the distance between entry and stop. Include the value of a pip or point, spread, expected slippage and any overnight financing that could accrue before the stop is reached. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses; it does not improve the quality of the underlying thesis.
Allow for gaps and event slippage
Central-bank decisions, employment releases and geopolitical shocks can move through several price levels before an order fills. A stop order limits intended risk but cannot guarantee the exact exit price in a fast market. Reduce size or avoid holding through a known event if the potential gap exceeds your plan.
Separate carry from price risk
Track financing received or paid separately from mark-to-market profit and loss. A position can show positive daily swap while accumulating a larger currency loss. Conversely, a short-term price gain does not prove that the carry premise is sound.
Review correlation and concentration
Holding AUD/USD and AUD/JPY in the same direction may concentrate exposure to the Australian dollar. Adding a separate USD or JPY position can increase, rather than diversify, the same macro risk. Map the currencies in every open trade before adding another pair.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming the higher-yielding currency must rise
Why it fails: Exchange rates can move more than the interest differential, and volatility can trigger rapid carry unwinds.
Correction: Model the currency move, financing, spread and exit rule together. Treat the interest differential as one input, not a guarantee.
Using a dated liquidity ranking as a current execution promise
Why it fails: The RBA’s AUD turnover and AUD/USD ranking refer to an April 2019 global survey.

Trading AUD/JPY as a simple risk-on switch
Why it fails: The pair also reflects RBA and BoJ expectations, Japanese domestic news and positioning.
Correction: Identify which leg is expected to move and what event would change that expectation.
Ignoring the quote currency
Why it fails: A bullish Australian-dollar view can lose against a stronger US dollar or yen.

What the August 2026 RBA context means
The RBA’s August 2026 Statement on Monetary Policy said the Australian dollar had depreciated since its May statement as yield differentials narrowed and some commodity prices, including iron ore, fell. At that statement’s reference point, the dollar remained around 5 percent above its level at the start of the year.
This is broad AUD context, not an October 2026 quote or a directional recommendation for AUD/USD or AUD/JPY. It illustrates why the pair choice must be refreshed: a narrowing yield differential affects the Australian-dollar leg, while the relative US and Japanese outlooks determine how that change appears in each quotation.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Have I written a specific AUD thesis and a separate USD or JPY thesis?
- Which central-bank expectations are changing, and what evidence would reverse that view?
- Are commodity prices and Australia’s terms of trade supporting or contradicting the thesis?
- What is the current risk-sentiment regime, and could safe-haven demand dominate?
- What are the live spread, swap, commission, margin and execution terms for my account?
- How much can I lose if price gaps through my stop?
- Am I accidentally duplicating AUD, USD or JPY exposure elsewhere?
- Does the holding period make sense for the financing cost and event calendar?
The pair that best suits your strategy is the one whose two-currency relationship you can explain, monitor and risk-manage. If you cannot state what should move the quote currency, changing pairs will not fix the trade thesis.
