Neither AT&T nor Verizon is the universal winner. Choose by checking service at the addresses and routes you actually use, comparing the full bill for the same number of lines, and confirming your phone supports the network features you want. National coverage figures and network rankings can help narrow the choice, but they cannot predict reception inside your home.
How to compare AT&T and Verizon fairly
Use the same household size and expected usage for both carriers. Before comparing advertised prices, note the recurring charge, promotion length and eligibility, taxes and fees, device payments, add-ons, and the terms that affect how you use service.
- Coverage at home, work, regular routes, and frequent destinations
- Premium-data terms and hotspot allowance
- International calling, texting, and data needs
- Monthly plan charges and the bill after promotions end
- Compatibility of your exact phone model
Plan names, prices, promotions, and included benefits change. Check each carrier’s current plan details and broadband nutrition label, then review the checkout total. Verizon’s comparison guide discusses plan structures and features, but it is carrier-authored rather than a neutral or exhaustive price survey: Verizon’s plan comparison guide.
Which carrier has better coverage where you live?
There is no reliable nationwide answer for an individual address. Start with the places that matter to you, including indoor locations and the routes between them. Use maps to screen for likely service, then seek local confirmation where possible; a coverage map is not a guarantee of reception in a particular building.

Use the FCC map as a starting point
The FCC National Broadband Map lets you compare providers’ reported 3G, 4G, and 5G mobile coverage. Its mobile coverage areas describe places where consumers should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor coverage. The 5G layers use 7/1 Mbps and 35/3 Mbps thresholds. The map is useful for comparing reported coverage, but it is not a measurement of your phone’s signal inside your home. See the FCC mobile coverage map FAQ and FCC National Broadband Map.
If you are not receiving the coverage shown for a provider, the FCC says you can challenge the reported information using outdoor or in-vehicle speed tests with its Mobile Speed Test App. This process does not establish indoor coverage.

Check each carrier’s own map
Carrier maps provide another view, but they are each company’s published coverage information. Verizon’s map lets you check an address for 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G, or 4G LTE service. AT&T’s map shows 5G, 4G LTE, and partner coverage. Check the exact address rather than inferring service from a nearby neighborhood: Verizon coverage map and AT&T wireless coverage map.

What network-experience figures can—and cannot—tell you
Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. Mobile Network Experience report covers a 90-day measurement period from September 1 through November 29, 2025. Its summary reports that AT&T users had a 3G-or-better connection 99.6% of the time, compared with 99.5% for Verizon users. The summary also says Verizon led for 5G Video Experience, 5G Live Video Experience, and Coverage Experience. These are distinct metrics, not a single overall ranking, and none predicts your experience at a particular address. See Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. report.
Carrier-reported population coverage figures are different measures again. AT&T says its 5G network covers over 316 million people, subject to a compatible plan and device. Verizon says its 4G LTE network covers more than 99% of the U.S. population. Those claims describe different technologies and should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking: AT&T coverage information and Verizon coverage information.

How to compare plan costs and features
Compare quotes for the same line count and broadly similar use. A low introductory price can be misleading if it applies only temporarily, requires specific eligibility, or leaves out costs and features you need.

| What to compare | What to record for each carrier |
|---|---|
| Recurring cost | Plan charge for the same number of lines, plus taxes and fees |
| Promotions | Discount amount, duration, eligibility, and price after the promotion |
| Device costs | Monthly payments and any relevant add-ons |
| Data and hotspot | Premium-data terms and hotspot allowance |
| International use | Calling, texting, and data coverage for the destinations you need |
Benefits can be attached to different plan tiers, so compare the exact plan rather than assuming a feature is included across a carrier’s lineup. If your household uses a hotspot or travels internationally, weigh those terms alongside the monthly charge.

Will your phone work after switching?
Switching carriers does not automatically mean you need a new phone. Check the exact model for compatibility with the carrier and the network service you expect before switching or buying a replacement. AT&T conditions coverage on having a compatible device and plan.
For Verizon’s full 5G Ultra Wideband network, the company says not all 5G devices support both high-band and mid-band spectrum. It lists n77 (C-band), n260, and n261 (mmWave) for access to the full network. Check the specifications of your specific handset against Verizon’s requirements: Verizon coverage and 5G information. A phone described simply as “5G” may not support every 5G band you want to use.
A practical way to make the decision
- List your real-world locations. Include home, work, regular routes, and places you visit often.
- Screen the addresses on the FCC map. Compare reported mobile coverage, keeping in mind that the map does not represent indoor service.
- Check both carrier maps. Look up exact addresses and note the technology shown, rather than relying on a national claim.
- Compare local experience. Ask people who use each network at the locations that matter to you, or test service if you have a practical way to do so.
- Build like-for-like quotes. Use the same number of lines and account for the post-promotion bill, taxes, fees, devices, hotspot, and international needs.
- Verify your handset. Confirm compatibility for your exact model and desired network features before making the switch.
Choose the carrier that delivers acceptable service at your important locations and fits your household’s full cost and feature needs. If the maps suggest a tie, local experience and the like-for-like bill are more useful decision points than a broad national coverage claim.
