AT&T wireless service does not automatically require a fixed-term contract. Under AT&T’s Consumer Service Agreement, wireless service without a Service Commitment is month-to-month. You can generally qualify by buying a phone at full retail price, financing it through an installment plan, or bringing your own device.
That does not mean every cancellation is free. A Service Commitment can carry an early termination fee, and an unpaid phone or accessory installment balance can become due immediately when you cancel the line linked to it. AT&T Prepaid monthly plans have no annual contract or credit check, but they still operate under plan-specific terms. Home internet products, including fiber and Internet Air, must be evaluated under their own order documents rather than the wireless-phone rules.
What “contract” means in AT&T’s terms
People use “contract” to describe several different obligations. Separating them is the key to predicting what you can cancel and what you may still owe.
| Type of obligation | How it works | What can remain after cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Service Commitment | A fixed service term accepted in your service documents. | An early termination fee may apply if you end service before the commitment finishes. |
| Month-to-month wireless service | No fixed Service Commitment; service renews monthly until you or AT&T cancel or terminate it. | Charges for service already used, and any separate device balance. |
| Device or accessory installment plan | The hardware price is divided into scheduled payments. | AT&T says unpaid installments tied to a canceled line are due immediately on the final bill. |
| Prepaid plan period | You pay in advance for a monthly, multi-month, or multi-line plan. | Unused prepaid service and the plan’s change or renewal rules, as stated for that plan. |
AT&T’s agreement gives this example for wireless service without a Service Commitment: “If you do not have a Service Commitment (for example, you purchase your Device from us at full retail price, under an installment plan, or bring your own Device), your Service is provided on a month-to-month basis and automatically renews unless cancelled or terminated.” The sentence describes the service term, not the separate obligation to pay for financed equipment.

Your main AT&T wireless options
Month-to-month service with a financed phone
You can have month-to-month wireless service while paying for a phone over time. The installment schedule is a credit or payment obligation for the device; it is not, by itself, a fixed-term service commitment. If you cancel the line before the installments are finished, AT&T’s cancellation guidance says the remaining unpaid balance is due immediately and appears on the final bill. The same treatment can apply to an accessory bought under an installment agreement.
Before accepting a promotion, review whether monthly bill credits depend on keeping the line active. The service agreement, device installment agreement, and promotion terms are separate documents. Your account’s service summary should control the answer for your particular offer.
Bring your own device
Bringing a phone you already own avoids a new AT&T device installment, but it does not bypass compatibility requirements. AT&T’s BYOD guidance requires a compatible, unlocked phone. Activation can use a physical SIM or an eSIM, depending on the handset and service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check the exact model and its compatibility with AT&T’s network and desired features.
- Confirm that the previous carrier has unlocked the phone; a phone that is merely paid off is not necessarily unlocked.
- Verify that the device supports the SIM or eSIM method you plan to use.
- Keep proof of ownership and the old carrier account details available if an activation or number transfer needs them.
If you need a handset, compare compatible unlocked smartphones rather than assuming every unlocked model will work. Compatibility must be checked by model and service, not by the word “unlocked” alone.
AT&T Prepaid
AT&T describes its Prepaid monthly plans as having no annual contract and no credit check. The catalog includes monthly, multi-month, and multi-line plan types. Because you pay before using service, there is usually no postpaid device-financing balance unless you separately obtained a phone or accessory under an installment arrangement.
“No annual contract” does not mean the plan has no rules. Check the plan period, the renewal or payment date, and what happens to remaining service when changing plans. AT&T recommends making a plan change near the renewal date; changing earlier can affect the service you have already paid for according to the plan’s terms.
Wireless service with a Service Commitment
A fixed Service Commitment is the exception that creates a traditional early-cancellation risk. AT&T’s agreement says an early termination fee may apply when you end the service before that commitment is complete. The exact fee, any waiver, and any return or equipment conditions depend on the service documents you accepted. Do not infer the amount from an advertisement or from another customer’s account.
What happens if you cancel AT&T wireless?
Cancellation ends future service only after the effective date and does not erase charges already incurred. AT&T’s agreement says monthly wireless service charges are not prorated when you cancel before the billing period ends. In practical terms, a line canceled partway through a billing cycle can still produce the full period’s recurring charge.
- Identify the line and effective date. Confirm which number is being canceled and when the cancellation will take effect. A suspension, port-out, and full account cancellation can have different consequences.
- Check for a Service Commitment. Look at the service summary or signed terms for a commitment end date and any early termination language.
- Check every installment agreement. Record the remaining phone and accessory balances. AT&T says the unpaid amount linked to a canceled line becomes due immediately.
- Review promotional credits. Determine whether a device discount or bill credit requires continued service. The promotion’s terms, not a generic “no contract” statement, govern what happens to future credits.
- Save the final bill. Confirm the final service charges, immediate device payoff, taxes or fees shown on the account, and the payment due date.
- Return equipment when required. Phones, gateways, or other hardware may have separate return instructions. Follow the order or return authorization rather than assuming cancellation itself completes a return.
Porting your number to another carrier generally initiates cancellation of the old wireless line, but you should still verify the effective date and final balance with AT&T. If you want to keep the number, do not cancel first unless AT&T or the new carrier specifically instructs you to do so; a completed cancellation can interfere with a transfer.

How to find out what your own account requires
Public plan descriptions cannot reveal every customer-specific obligation. Use this account audit before changing service:
- Service summary: Look for “Service Commitment,” a commitment end date, or month-to-month wording.
- Device installment agreement: Note each financed device or accessory, the remaining principal, and the line to which it is attached.
- Promotion details: Check bill-credit duration, eligibility conditions, and whether credits stop when the line is upgraded, transferred, or canceled.
- Billing cycle: Find the cycle end date because cancellation generally does not prorate a monthly wireless charge.
- Account status: Make sure the line is active, suspended, or pending a port. Status can change the steps available to you.
- Order confirmation: For a recent activation or upgrade, use the confirmation and service-specific terms rather than a general web-page summary.
If the documents conflict, ask AT&T to identify the controlling term for your line and request the answer in writing or in a case record. Keep screenshots or downloaded copies of the service summary and installment agreement before you make a change.

Prepaid customers normally stop future charges by allowing the paid service period to end or by turning off renewal, subject to the selected plan’s rules. Since payment is made in advance, the main question is often whether unused days, data, or multi-month service are forfeited when you switch or close the account.
Changing near renewal
AT&T recommends changing a Prepaid plan near its renewal date. Check the account’s displayed renewal date and the new plan’s start date before confirming. A multi-month plan may not behave like a monthly plan, and a multi-line account may require changes to individual lines rather than the entire account.
Prepaid phone financing
Prepaid service itself has no annual contract according to AT&T’s plan guidance, but a separately financed phone or accessory can still create a payoff obligation. If you see an installment balance, treat it as a device obligation and read that agreement before canceling.
Does the answer change for AT&T home internet?
Yes. AT&T’s consumer agreement covers wired and wireless internet, but the applicable terms vary by product and order. Fiber, Internet Air, fixed wireless, DSL, and bundled services should not be treated as interchangeable with wireless phone service.
For home internet, inspect the order confirmation for:
- the exact product and service address;
- any stated commitment, introductory period, or early termination condition;
- whether the gateway or other equipment is AT&T-owned or customer-owned;
- installation, activation, or restocking terms;
- the required return method and deadline after cancellation.
AT&T’s internet terms state that AT&T-owned equipment generally must be returned within 21 calendar days after termination unless AT&T tells you otherwise in writing. Keep the tracking number and proof of delivery. A wireless-phone answer such as “month-to-month” cannot establish the commitment or equipment rules for your internet order.

Confusing “no contract” with “nothing is owed
A month-to-month service term can coexist with a device installment. The service may be cancelable without an early termination fee while the phone payoff remains due.

Assuming prepaid means no governing agreement
AT&T Prepaid has no annual contract or credit check, but the plan’s renewal, change, and remaining-service rules still apply.

Because monthly wireless charges are not prorated on early cancellation, choosing a date without checking the cycle can leave you paying for the rest of that period.
Using an unlocked phone without checking compatibility
Unlock status is only one requirement. Model compatibility, supported network features, and SIM or eSIM capability must also be confirmed.
Applying phone rules to internet service
Home internet products have separate order documents and equipment-return requirements. Read those documents before scheduling a disconnect.
Practical examples
Example 1: Bring your own phone and use postpaid service
You bring a compatible, unlocked phone and activate a wireless line without accepting a Service Commitment. The service is month-to-month. If you later cancel, you still owe charges for the current billing period, but there is no AT&T phone installment to pay because you supplied the device. Any other commitment shown in your service documents would control.
Example 2: Finance a phone on month-to-month service
You finance a phone and the service summary says month-to-month. Canceling the line does not create a service-term early termination fee solely because the phone was financed. However, AT&T says the remaining phone installments become due immediately, and any applicable promotion may stop according to its terms.
Example 3: Use AT&T Prepaid monthly service
You choose a monthly Prepaid plan with no annual contract and no credit check. You can avoid a new annual commitment, but you should change or stop renewal near the displayed renewal date and check how unused prepaid service is handled. A separately financed device remains a separate obligation.
Example 4: Cancel home internet
You cancel Internet Air or another home-internet product. The wireless-phone month-to-month rule does not answer whether your order has a commitment or what equipment you must return. Your order confirmation and product terms determine those points; AT&T-owned equipment generally has a 21-calendar-day return window unless AT&T provides different written instructions.
Cancellation checklist
- Download the latest bill, service summary, installment agreements, and promotion terms.
- Write down the Service Commitment status and any end date.
- List every phone and accessory installment tied to the line.
- Ask for the payoff amount and how it will appear on the final bill.
- Check the billing-cycle end date and the no-proration rule.
- Decide whether you need to port your number; coordinate the port before canceling.
- Request equipment-return instructions and keep shipping proof.
- After cancellation, verify the final bill and dispute an error promptly with your account records.
The most accurate answer for a specific account is therefore two-part: determine whether the wireless service has a fixed Service Commitment, then separately determine whether a device or accessory balance remains. For Prepaid, check the plan period and renewal rules. For internet, rely on the exact product order documents.
