The strongest atmospheric horror games use sound in different ways: to place you inside a character’s mind, make a setting feel alive, or turn useful information into a risk. For those distinct approaches, start with Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, SOMA, and Alien: Isolation. This is a curated shortlist, not a ranking: no single audio technique makes a game objectively the best.
How these games use sound differently
Sound design can shape horror in at least three ways. It can create a subjective point of view, build the atmosphere of a place, or give players information that changes what they do. Hellblade: sound from a character’s perspective
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
Hellblade is the clearest pick if you want horror and psychological tension shaped by a surrounding soundscape. Xbox Wire’s 2024 interview with the audio team explains binaural audio as a recording method using two microphones to create a three-dimensional soundscape, like hearing with your own ears. The interview also discusses how acoustics and reverberation contribute to immersion in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.
Headphones can make spatial audio easier to appreciate, but the available evidence does not establish that a particular headset is required. If you prefer speakers or need a different listening mode, check the settings for your exact edition and platform rather than assuming options are identical across releases.

For Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the Steam listing describes the game with atmospheric and psychological tags and lists stereo and mono audio modes. Separately, Xbox’s listing specifies that the Enhanced PC version has individual Master, Music, SFX, Voices, and Menu volume controls, along with stereo and mono output. Those settings are version-specific; they should not be taken as a feature list for every platform or edition.
SOMA: sound that makes a place feel wrong
SOMA
SOMA is a strong choice if you want environmental unease rather than audio centered on a character’s subjective perspective. It takes place in PATHOS-II, an underwater facility. Frictional Games describes the game as using a physically simulated world and a dynamic sound system to support immersion. That makes the environment—not just individual sounds—a central part of the experience.

Choose it when you want a setting whose atmosphere is built through its world and soundscape. The official material supports that broad description, but does not provide a basis here for ranking its audio against the other games.

The tension is not limited to the tracker: the guide also highlights the unease of hearing the creature in the vents. This is the best fit on this list if you want sensory cues to influence moment-to-moment decisions rather than serve only as atmosphere.
Which game should you choose?
- For binaural sound and a close psychological perspective: start with the two Hellblade games.
- For environmental ambience and an unsettling setting: choose SOMA.

Check audio and accessibility settings for your edition
Audio options can vary by game, platform, and edition. The evidence cited here confirms stereo and mono modes for the Steam listing of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and separate volume controls plus stereo and mono output for the Xbox-listed Enhanced PC version. It does not establish a shared set of subtitles, audio controls, or accessibility features across all four games.
