Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are wide-ranging, warm-blooded pelagic predators of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. They occupy temperate surface waters but can dive beyond 800 metres, and one documented occurrence reaches at least 1,015 metres. Tagged fish cross the Atlantic, even though fisheries are managed as eastern/Mediterranean and western stock units. Their food changes with age and location, from small prey and zooplankton to schooling fish, squid and crabs.
The species is classified globally as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List’s 2021 assessment, with population trend listed as unknown. That broad category does not determine whether a particular fishery stock is healthy: stock assessments, catch limits and exceptional-circumstances decisions are made separately and updated on different schedules.
What Atlantic bluefin tuna are and where they live
Atlantic bluefin tuna are pelagic fish, meaning they live in the water column rather than on the seafloor. IUCN describes their habitat as both marine neritic (over the continental shelf) and oceanic (open water). They are also oceanodromous: their long-distance movements occur within the ocean, including journeys between feeding and spawning areas.
They are associated mainly with temperate Atlantic waters. NOAA’s western-Atlantic description places them from Newfoundland south to the Gulf of America. That is a western-range description, not the complete range of the species; eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean waters are covered in separate fishery-management and assessment units.

Surface-oriented, but capable of deep dives
Bluefin often spend substantial time near the surface, where they can exploit dense schools of prey and warmer water. Their behaviour is not limited to shallow water. NOAA reports frequent dives to roughly 500–1,000 metres, while tagged adults have been recorded beyond 800 metres. IUCN cites occurrence to at least 1,015 metres.
Depth use varies with temperature, prey, age and the need to travel. A fish seen at the surface is therefore not necessarily staying in a shallow habitat; it may alternate between surface feeding and deep excursions during the same broad movement.
How far Atlantic bluefin tuna migrate
Atlantic bluefin make some of the ocean’s most extensive fish migrations. Tagging has shown movement across the east–west Atlantic boundary. A tuna that is assigned to an eastern or western management unit can therefore encounter, and sometimes mix with, fish associated with the other unit.
Why “eastern” and “western” stocks do not mean sealed populations
ICCAT manages two principal assessment units: the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stock, and the western Atlantic stock. These are practical units for estimating catches, recruitment and fishing mortality. They are not barriers that fish respect. Long-distance movement and mixed-stock fisheries are part of the reason assessments require tagging, fishery data and assumptions about connectivity.
When a report says “western stock” or “eastern stock,” read it as a management scope. It does not mean every fish remains on one side of the ocean for life, nor does a stock result automatically describe the entire species.

Spawning in the Gulf of America
NOAA identifies the Gulf of America as an important spawning area and says bluefin tend to return to the same spawning areas. Its western-resource description gives the spawning season as mid-April through June. Spawning-site fidelity helps explain why protecting seasonal concentrations matters: removing mature fish from a predictable spawning area can affect a management unit even when the species as a whole ranges across an entire ocean.
Outside spawning periods, adults undertake feeding and trans-Atlantic movements. The exact route and timing differ among individuals and years because temperature fronts, prey fields and ocean conditions shift.

What Atlantic bluefin tuna eat
Bluefin are top predators, but there is no single fixed menu. Diet changes with body size, development stage, location and the prey available in a particular season. NOAA lists fish, squid and crustaceans for juveniles, and mainly baitfish plus squid and crustaceans for adults. IUCN gives a broader picture that includes small schooling fish such as anchovies and sauries, cephalopods and red crabs.
| Life stage | Typical prey described by the sources | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Juveniles | Fish, squid and crustaceans; in a Mediterranean study, mainly zooplankton and small coastal pelagic fish | Small individuals target prey they can capture and digest efficiently; the balance changes as they grow. |
| Sub-adults | Medium-sized pelagic fish, shrimp and cephalopods | Increasing body size allows pursuit of larger, faster or more energy-dense prey. |
| Adults | Baitfish such as herring, bluefish and mackerel; larger fish, squid and other cephalopods; crustaceans | Adults can switch among schooling fish and invertebrates as local prey concentrations change. |
Diet differences by region
IUCN’s summary of a Mediterranean study found a progression from zooplankton and small coastal fish in juveniles, to medium pelagic fish, shrimp and cephalopods in sub-adults, and mainly cephalopods and larger fish in adults. That study should not be treated as a universal menu for every Atlantic bluefin: western Atlantic prey communities and seasonal conditions differ.
The most accurate generalisation is that bluefin are flexible predators. They may concentrate on a baitfish school when one is available, then switch to squid, crabs or another abundant prey. This flexibility supports long migrations but also links bluefin condition to the productivity of the ecosystems they traverse.

Atlantic bluefin tuna conservation status: one species, several answers
“Conservation status” can refer to at least two different questions:
- Global species status: how the species is classified across its range under the IUCN Red List.
- Fishery stock status: whether a defined management unit is estimated to be overfished or subject to overfishing, and what catch rules apply.
Those answers can differ without contradiction because they use different boundaries, methods, dates and decision rules.
Global IUCN assessment (2021)
The IUCN Red List assessment published in 2021 classified Atlantic bluefin tuna globally as Least Concern. It listed the population trend as unknown. “Least Concern” means the global assessment did not place the species in a threatened IUCN category at that time; it does not mean every regional stock is secure, that fishing pressure is harmless, or that abundance is known precisely.
Fishery assessments are stock-specific
ICCAT’s assessment index lists the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean assessment as conducted in 2022, with the next assessment scheduled for 2027. The western Atlantic assessment is listed as 2021, also with the next assessment scheduled for 2027. A 2021 western assessment should not be presented as a fresh 2026 population estimate.
NOAA’s western-stock resource page says the population level is unknown, fishing is not subject to overfishing, and—citing the 2021 assessment—overfished status is unknown. These statements apply to the western Atlantic management context. They do not replace the global IUCN category, and they should not be extended automatically to the eastern Atlantic or Mediterranean.

What the technical terms mean
- Subject to overfishing: the current rate of removals is judged too high under the assessment’s reference points.
- Overfished: the stock’s biomass is estimated to be below a reference level, regardless of whether current fishing pressure has recently fallen.
- Unknown: available data and modelling do not support a reliable classification, not that scientists have found no fish.
- Population trend unknown: the global direction of change could not be determined confidently in the cited assessment.
ICCAT cautions that stock-assessment conclusions depend on available data, hypotheses and assumptions. New tagging, catch, recruitment or survey information can therefore change the confidence in a result without implying that the fish suddenly appeared or disappeared.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Atlantic bluefin fisheries are managed
ICCAT is the regional fisheries management organisation responsible for Atlantic bluefin management. Its rules combine stock assessments with catch limits, allocations and procedures for responding to unexpected changes in the evidence.
Management procedure and exceptional circumstances
ICCAT reports that its Atlantic bluefin management procedure was adopted in 2022. An exceptional-circumstances protocol was adopted in 2023. The organisation reported that no exceptional circumstances were declared in 2023 or 2024, while its scientific committee did not reach consensus in 2025 on whether exceptional circumstances had been invoked.
This process matters because a quota decision is not the same thing as a biological census. A management procedure can adjust allowable catches in response to indicators and risk while the exact population size remains uncertain.

2025 U.S. allocation decision
In a release dated December 19, 2025, NOAA reported that ICCAT agreed to an additional 231 metric tons of U.S. allocation. NOAA described that as a 17% increase in baseline quota and allowances, with increased total allowable catch for U.S. fishermen beginning in 2026.

Those numbers describe an allocation and catch-rule change, not a global abundance estimate and not a change to the IUCN Red List category. The geography, recipient and effective date belong with the figures whenever they are cited.
Why a globally “Least Concern” tuna still needs careful management
Atlantic bluefin combine traits that make management difficult: they travel across national jurisdictions, aggregate predictably for spawning and feeding, and are valuable enough that fishing effort can focus on the same concentrations repeatedly. Mixed-stock fisheries can also catch fish associated with different assessment units in one operation.
Management must therefore track more than total landings. Scientists need information on size and age composition, spawning areas, migration, recruitment, discards and fishing mortality. Tagging shows connectivity that a map of political boundaries cannot capture, while assessment models translate incomplete observations into estimates with stated uncertainty.

Quick Recap
How to read a new bluefin tuna claim
- Identify the scope. Is the statement about the whole species, the western Atlantic, or the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean?
- Check the date. IUCN’s cited category is from 2021; ICCAT’s listed stock assessments are from 2022 and 2021, with both next scheduled for 2027.
- Separate biology from management. A quota, allocation or total allowable catch is a regulatory number, not a direct count of tuna.
- Look for uncertainty language. “Unknown” can describe biomass, overfished status or population trend and should not be silently converted into “healthy” or “collapsed.”
- Keep migration in view. Eastern and western units mix, so a stock label is an accounting framework rather than a claim of permanent geographic isolation.
Key facts at a glance
| Question | Evidence-based answer |
|---|---|
| Where do they live? | Temperate Atlantic waters and the Mediterranean; pelagic habitat from neritic shelves to open ocean, with dives documented to at least 1,015 metres. |
| How far do they migrate? | Across the Atlantic, including movement across the east–west boundary; management units still distinguish eastern/Mediterranean and western stocks. |
| Where do they spawn? | NOAA identifies the Gulf of America as an important spawning area, with spawning generally from mid-April to June. |
| What do they eat? | Prey varies by stage and region: zooplankton and small fish in young fish, then pelagic fish, squid, shrimp, crabs and larger fish. |
| Are they endangered? | The IUCN’s 2021 global category is Least Concern, with trend unknown. Regional fishery status must be read from the relevant stock assessment. |
