Thunder Lotus has moved At Fate’s End from a 2026 target to 2027, but it announced the delay with a playable one-hour Steam demo. The preview introduces Shan Hemlock’s fractured family, the game’s 2.5D exploration and action-platforming, and its unusual system of fighting through both swordplay and conversation. It is substantial enough to make the wait feel purposeful rather than empty.
What happened to At Fate’s End?
At Fate’s End is the next game from Thunder Lotus, the studio behind Spiritfarer. It was originally targeted for 2026 and is now planned for 2027. No specific launch date has been announced, so the new window should be treated as a target rather than a fixed release day.
Alongside the delay announcement, Thunder Lotus released a one-hour demo on Steam. That timing changes the message: players are not simply being asked to wait longer; they can immediately try the systems the extra development time is meant to refine.

What the demo lets you play
A 2.5D journey through a broken family
You play Shan Hemlock, the youngest and least experienced knight in a family of warriors. After Shan’s mother names her successor shortly before the queen’s death, Shan travels through kingdoms ruled by her siblings. Her goal is to take their swords—the source of their magical abilities—and become the next monarch.

The demo’s featured region belongs to Camilla, Shan’s older sister. Camilla is a formidable warrior and an unwilling ruler whose weather-controlling sword and leadership responsibilities have contributed to alcoholism. Exploring her castle, the surrounding woods and the nearby town reveals frightened residents, neglected buildings, monsters and the lingering damage from an earlier flood.
Exploration, puzzles and combat in one loop
The opening hour combines side-scrolling 2.5D traversal with environmental puzzles, real-time combat and conversations that carry mechanical consequences. Investigating Camilla’s territory is not just a route between fights: the condition of the settlement and what its people say establish how her rule has affected the family’s subjects.

Sibling duels fought with words and weapons
Major confrontations alternate between real-time action-platforming and pauses for verbal exchanges. During the dialogue phase, your choices can damage an opponent’s resolve. Winning the exchange removes health and makes the following physical phase easier; losing leaves Shan more vulnerable. The result is a two-part duel in which reading a sibling’s motives can matter as much as dodging an attack.
How progression works
A family-linked skill tree
Meeting family members unlocks skill-tree nodes based on their traits. Progression therefore reflects the people Shan encounters, not just a generic experience meter: the family’s personalities become part of the character build.

Tarot cards that change combat and the world
Major-arcana tarot cards provide active abilities and can also alter how Shan interacts with the environment. The demo’s examples include The Chariot, which can pause time and teleport Shan or function as a double-jump, depending on how it is equipped. The Devil follows the same equipped-card approach. This creates room for experimentation: a card can solve a traversal problem, change the rhythm of a fight or open a different route through the world.
Is the demo worth playing while you wait?
Yes, particularly if you want to understand what makes At Fate’s End different from a conventional action-adventure. The demo gives you a complete first look at its central promise: family drama is not separated from gameplay but expressed through investigation, dialogue choices, sword-based powers and boss encounters.

Players who enjoyed Spiritfarer’s emotional storytelling will recognize Thunder Lotus’s interest in relationships and loss, but the structure is notably different. At Fate’s End shifts toward combat, platforming and direct conflict between siblings rather than management and exploration.

Where the preview is less convincing
The first hour is highly guided. Investigations are straightforward, and the correct dialogue deductions are often obvious. That is understandable for a tutorial, but it establishes a clear requirement for the full release: later quests need more demanding evidence gathering, less predictable conversations and consequences that test the player’s reading of each sibling.

The demo proves that the underlying design is distinctive; it does not yet prove that the mystery and deduction systems can sustain a full campaign. The 2027 delay gives Thunder Lotus time to deepen those elements alongside the combat and progression already shown.
What to expect from the wait
- Release window: 2027, following the move from the original 2026 target.
- Available preview: a one-hour Steam demo released with the delay announcement.
- Confirmed focus: Shan’s attempt to confront her siblings, claim their magical swords and become monarch.
- Core systems: 2.5D exploration, puzzles, real-time action-platforming, dialogue-based combat, a family-linked skill tree and tarot-card abilities.
- Open question: whether the full game will make its investigations and verbal deductions as complex as its premise promises.
Bottom line
At Fate’s End’s delay is disappointing, but the accompanying demo is unusually effective compensation. In about an hour, it presents a clear identity: a combat-focused adventure where family trauma, political failure and personal loyalties shape both the story and the mechanics. Its guided opening leaves room for improvement, yet the combination of sibling duels, tarot-driven abilities and emotionally charged exploration makes the 2027 wait easier to justify.
