An asynchronous USB DAC uses a clock in or associated with the device to set the timing of audio playback. The computer adapts the data it sends to the DAC’s requested rate. “Asynchronous” describes this clock relationship; the USB audio transfer itself can still be isochronous.

What does asynchronous mean on a USB DAC?

It describes how the audio endpoint’s sample timing relates to USB timing. In asynchronous mode, the endpoint consumes audio according to an external clock or a free-running clock in the device, rather than synchronizing its sample rate to USB Start Of Frame (SOF) timing. The USB-IF’s Audio Class 1.0 specification defines asynchronous isochronous endpoints this way: USB-IF Audio Class 1.0 specification, section 3.3.1.

For playback, the computer sends samples to the DAC, but the DAC’s audio clock determines how quickly those samples are consumed. The device must therefore communicate its desired rate to the host so the host can adjust its packet delivery. Apple describes this requirement in its USB audio device design considerations.

How is the host told how much audio to send?

Feedback lets the playback device communicate its preferred data rate to the computer. Apple documents two approaches:

  • 2 in 1 USB Audio Adapter: UGREEN USB to 3.5mm jack audio adapter supports both listening and talking. In-line control and microphone function allows you to chat while gaming. This USB Aux adapter enables you to connect headphones, headset, speakers with 3.5mm jack to your PC through the USB A port. [*Note: The 3.5mm adapter can support the connection of a single microphone for use. Please note that the 3.5mm male microphone's attribute requirement is TRRS]
  • 24bit 96KHz High Quality Sound: Built-in advanced smart chip, USB sound card supports CTIA and OMIP standard headsets. The USB to Aux adapter facilitates high-resolution audio output and noise reduction up to 24bit/96kHz (others are 16bit/48kHz)to enhance the original sound quality of your PC devices. Note: Microphone does not support 24bit 96KHz, only headphones can
  • Built to Last: With aluminium alloy shell, the Aux to USB adapter is more durable and portable than other plastic USB audio adapter. Nylon braided design of USB to audio jack adapter ensures stable audio transmission. 10000+ bend tests prove that USB headset adapter can prevent damage caused by tangling and scratching
  • Broad Compatibility: This USB external sound card is compatible with Windows 11/10/98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux//Raspberry Pi, MacBook Pro 2019, MacBook Air 2018, PS5/ PS4, Switch 2, Google Chromebook, Windows Surface Pro 3. *Note: Does not support Apple headphone line control
  • Plug and Play: No driver is required, just plug and play. USB bus-powered, no external power is required for this convenient sound card. *Note:Supports regular headphones with a resistance of less than 50 ohms, but does not support high-resistance headphones
  • Explicit feedback: the device reports feedback through a separate isochronous endpoint.
  • Implicit feedback: the host derives the rate from an input stream when that stream and the output stream share a clock.

The implementation details can vary by device; the important point is that the host adapts its sending rate to the device’s consumption rate.

How does asynchronous differ from synchronous and adaptive USB audio?

These terms distinguish which clock governs the audio endpoint and how its rate relates to USB timing. They do not describe different USB transfer types.

Synchronization type What governs sample timing Relationship to USB SOF Feedback or rate control
Synchronous USB timing Audio timing is synchronized to SOF Does not use asynchronous feedback to make the host follow an independent device clock
Adaptive The endpoint adjusts its rate in response to the incoming data rate Rate adapts to the host’s delivery Endpoint adapts rather than asking the host to follow an independent device clock
Asynchronous An external or free-running device clock Not synchronized to SOF For playback, feedback allows the host to adapt packet delivery to the device’s requested rate

USB audio can use isochronous transfers in all these synchronization arrangements. Isochronous describes the transfer type used for time-sensitive audio; asynchronous describes the clock relationship of the endpoint. Android’s USB audio documentation notes that isochronous transfer prioritizes real-time behavior over error recovery.

Does asynchronous USB audio guarantee better sound?

No. The mode describes clocking and feedback behavior; by itself, it does not establish audible superiority or prove that a DAC eliminates jitter. Android characterizes having the clock near the converter as a theoretical advantage, not a guarantee of a particular listening result. Actual performance depends on the device’s design, and the cited technical definitions do not establish a universal sound-quality outcome.

How can you check whether a USB DAC is asynchronous?

  1. Find the exact model and revision in the manufacturer’s technical specifications or user documentation.
  2. Look for an explicit statement that USB playback uses asynchronous isochronous mode or an asynchronous USB audio endpoint.
  3. If the listing only uses “asynchronous” as a marketing term, consult the technical documentation for its clocking and feedback implementation.
  4. Do not infer the mode from USB Audio Class support alone; confirm that the documentation identifies the synchronization type for that device.

The USB-IF maintains current specification materials in its document library, including USB Audio Class 2.0 specification materials and related updates. Those specifications explain the terminology, but they do not confirm the implementation of any particular DAC.
