Short answer: The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 (2026) FA401EA is the configuration that tests the “no discrete GPU” idea. It pairs AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 392 processor with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics. ASUS also sells a different 2026 A14, the FA401GM, with a Ryzen AI 9 H 465 and an NVIDIA RTX 5060 Laptop GPU. Treating those two machines as one product leads to the wrong expectations about gaming performance, memory, price and upgradeability.
The FA401EA is potentially the more interesting design: it puts a high-end integrated GPU in a compact gaming notebook instead of adding a separate graphics chip. WIRED’s review presents that model as capable of discrete-GPU-like gaming, while Tom’s Guide’s March 30, 2026 review takes a more critical view of its value. Neither conclusion should be converted into a universal frame-rate promise without the game, resolution, preset, power mode and test data. The right verdict is conditional: the FA401EA can make sense when portability and integrated graphics efficiency matter more than predictable RTX features, while the FA401GM remains the safer choice for buyers who specifically want a discrete GPU.
Which 2026 ASUS TUF Gaming A14 are you buying?
“ASUS TUF Gaming A14 (2026)” is not a complete model description. ASUS announced two materially different configurations on January 7, 2026. The model relevant to this review’s no-discrete-GPU premise is FA401EA. The other is FA401GM, which has a separate RTX graphics processor. Check the exact SKU in the retailer listing, configuration selector and system information before ordering.
| Configuration | Processor and graphics | Memory information | What the specification means |
|---|---|---|---|
| FA401EA | AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 392 with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics | Complete FA401EA memory options were not established in the available ASUS material. | This is the integrated-graphics A14 discussed by the no-discrete-GPU premise. The graphics processor is on the same platform as the CPU rather than a separate laptop GPU. |
| FA401GM | AMD Ryzen AI 9 H 465 with NVIDIA RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, 8 GB GDDR7 | ASUS Canada lists a maximum of 32 GB LPDDR5X onboard memory and no memory expansion. | This is a conventional discrete-GPU gaming configuration. Its graphics performance and power behavior should not be used as a proxy for the FA401EA. |
ASUS lists an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS for the FA401GM specification. ASUS also says the FA401GM’s RTX 5060 can reach a maximum 115 W total graphics power in Manual Mode. That 115 W figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured result, and it applies to the FA401GM only.

What “no discrete GPU” means on the FA401EA
A discrete GPU is a separate graphics processor with its own graphics memory and power budget. The FA401EA’s Radeon 8060S is integrated with the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 platform instead. It therefore avoids a second graphics chip, but it also does not have a separate pool of dedicated VRAM like the RTX 5060 in the FA401GM. Games and creative applications use the platform’s available system memory according to the firmware and software configuration.
That architecture can reduce component count and allow more of the notebook’s power and cooling capacity to be shared between CPU and graphics workloads. It does not automatically make the machine faster, quieter or longer-lasting. A game’s result depends on memory bandwidth, the selected power mode, drivers, resolution, quality preset, upscaling and whether the laptop is plugged in. An integrated GPU can look very strong in one workload and less compelling in another that benefits from dedicated VRAM or mature ray-tracing and upscaling features.
The important distinction is practical rather than semantic. The FA401EA is not “GPU-less”; it has Radeon graphics. It is a laptop without a separate graphics card. That makes the machine relevant to people who want to play modern games in a smaller chassis, but it does not eliminate the normal compromises of gaming on a shared-memory platform.

WIRED’s interpretation
WIRED reviewed the integrated-graphics A14 and described AMD’s Max+ 392/Strix Halo implementation as recreating discrete-GPU-like gaming performance. That is an editorial conclusion about the FA401EA, not a universal equivalence between Radeon 8060S and every discrete laptop GPU. The available review coverage does not provide a complete, directly comparable benchmark table here, so the claim should be read with the test game, resolution, preset and power mode in mind.
Tom’s Guide’s value criticism
Tom’s Guide published a review dated March 30, 2026, with a more skeptical value framing. Its review extract describes the Max+ 392 as a chip with a 40-core GPU. That figure is attributable to Tom’s Guide’s coverage; it is not, by itself, a frame-rate result or a guarantee that the FA401EA will outperform a particular RTX-equipped notebook.
These reviews are not necessarily contradictory. One can find the integrated model technically impressive while still questioning its price, game compatibility, battery behavior or alternatives. Without a common test suite for FA401EA and FA401GM, a buyer should not choose between them from a headline alone.

Gaming performance: how to evaluate the FA401EA honestly
No independently verified benchmark result or named benchmark statistic is established for this review. That makes a test plan more useful than an invented average frame rate. If you are evaluating a specific FA401EA listing or return window, record the following conditions for every game:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Use a stated resolution and preset. Record whether the game runs at 1920×1080, 2560×1600 or another resolution, and whether the preset is Low, Medium, High or Ultra. A result without those settings cannot be compared meaningfully.
- Separate native rendering from upscaling. Note whether the game uses a vendor upscaler, dynamic resolution or frame generation. These options can change smoothness and image quality substantially.
- Test on AC power and on battery separately. Gaming laptops commonly change CPU and graphics limits away from the charger. A result obtained while plugged in should not be presented as battery performance.
- Allow a sustained run. Record performance after the initial loading period, not only the first minute. A compact chassis may settle to a different power or temperature level during a longer session.
- Record frame-time behavior. Average frames per second can hide stutter. Check one-percent lows or visible hitching when a game loads a new area, compiles shaders or streams textures.
- Keep driver and firmware versions with the result. Radeon drivers, BIOS updates and game patches can alter performance. Date-stamp your notes so an older result is not mistaken for a current one.
For a reader choosing between the two A14 configurations, this method answers the question that a generic “discrete-GPU-like” label cannot: whether the FA401EA reaches an acceptable experience in the games you actually play. Competitive games at sensible settings may be a better fit for the integrated model than heavily ray-traced releases that need dedicated memory and specialized acceleration.
Processor and AI features
The FA401EA’s Ryzen AI Max+ 392 combines the CPU and Radeon 8060S on one platform. That arrangement gives the system a large shared compute resource, but the available material does not establish a complete clock-speed table, sustained-wattage result or independent application benchmark for this notebook. Do not infer those numbers from the processor name alone.
The FA401GM uses a different Ryzen AI 9 H 465 and is listed by ASUS Canada with an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS. TOPS is a theoretical throughput specification for the neural-processing unit; it does not predict the speed of every AI application. Software support, model size, memory capacity and whether an application uses the NPU, CPU or GPU determine the result.
For office work, software development, photo editing and compiling, both configurations may feel fast when paired with adequate memory and cooling. The choice becomes more consequential when an application is explicitly GPU-accelerated, requires CUDA or dedicated VRAM, or benefits from the RTX 5060’s separate graphics power budget. Check the application vendor’s supported APIs before assuming that an integrated Radeon path is interchangeable with an RTX path.
Memory and upgradeability are configuration-specific
FA401GM: a fixed ceiling
ASUS Canada’s technical specification lists 32 GB maximum LPDDR5X onboard memory for the FA401GM and says that no memory expansion is possible. “Onboard” means the modules are not ordinary user-replaceable laptop DIMMs. Select enough memory at purchase for the games, virtual machines, creative projects and AI tools you expect to run simultaneously.

FA401EA: verify the regional listing
The available ASUS announcement identifies the FA401EA processor and Radeon 8060S pairing but does not establish a complete set of FA401EA memory options. Do not carry the FA401GM’s 32 GB ceiling across to the FA401EA without checking the exact regional specification. The product page should state installed capacity, memory type and whether any expansion is possible; if it does not, ask the seller for the full SKU specification before paying.
Memory matters more on an integrated-graphics machine because graphics data shares the platform’s memory resources. Capacity is not the same as bandwidth, and neither figure guarantees a particular game result, but an underspecified or non-upgradable configuration can become the limiting factor sooner than the processor name suggests.
Storage, display and chassis: details to confirm before purchase
The verified material for this review does not establish a complete FA401EA or FA401GM table for SSD capacity, display resolution, refresh rate, color coverage, brightness, ports, weight or dimensions. Those specifications can vary by country and even by retailer SKU. Do not assume that every A14 carrying the 2026 name has the same panel or drive.
Use the listing for the exact model code and confirm:
- Panel resolution and refresh rate, plus whether the stated refresh rate is available at the panel’s native resolution.
- Brightness and color-gamut claims, preferably from a full technical sheet rather than a retailer’s abbreviated bullet list.
- Factory SSD capacity and the number of accessible storage slots.
- USB, display-output, audio and networking ports needed by your desk setup.
- Physical weight, charger size and warranty terms for your region.
These checks are especially important for the FA401EA. A strong integrated GPU does not compensate for a display that is poorly suited to your games or creative work, and a compact chassis has less room for later storage or memory changes.
Thermals, fan noise and battery life: what is not yet quantified
The supplied review coverage does not provide a common set of measured temperatures, fan-noise readings, battery-runtime tests or sustained-power results for both A14 configurations. It would be misleading to assign a battery-hour figure or declare one model quieter without those controlled measurements.

In practical use, evaluate the machine under the workload you care about. For gaming, monitor temperatures and fan behavior after at least 20 to 30 minutes, note whether performance remains stable, and check whether the keyboard or palm rest becomes uncomfortable. For battery work, use a defined screen brightness, wireless state, browser workload and power mode. Compare like with like: a manufacturer’s light-use estimate is not equivalent to a continuous gaming test.

It also says nothing about the FA401EA, whose shared CPU-and-GPU platform has different power behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and availability depend on country and SKU
Current prices, inventory and target-market availability were not established in the verified material. ASUS announced the models, but regional configurations and retailer stock can change. Before publication or purchase, check the ASUS listing for your country and compare the exact FA401EA or FA401GM code rather than relying on a generic “TUF Gaming A14 (2026)” title.
When comparing prices, include the memory capacity, SSD size, display specification and warranty. A cheaper FA401EA with less memory may not be a bargain if the platform cannot be upgraded. Conversely, the premium for an FA401GM buys more than an RTX badge: it buys a separate 8 GB GDDR7 graphics subsystem and a different CPU, with a documented 32 GB onboard-memory ceiling and no expansion.
FA401EA versus FA401GM: which one fits your use?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small gaming laptop without a separate graphics chip | FA401EA | It is the Ryzen AI Max+ 392/Radeon 8060S integrated-graphics configuration. | Regional memory capacity, display, cooling behavior and game-specific results. |
| Dedicated graphics memory and predictable discrete-GPU software support | FA401GM | It includes an RTX 5060 Laptop GPU with 8 GB GDDR7. | Actual power mode, price, panel specification and the fixed 32 GB memory ceiling. |
| Heavy ray tracing, CUDA-dependent tools or GPU workloads that need separate VRAM | Usually FA401GM | A discrete RTX subsystem is the more direct fit for software that requires NVIDIA-specific acceleration or dedicated graphics memory. | Confirm the application’s current requirements; do not rely on the laptop name alone. |
| Maximum flexibility to add memory later | Neither should be assumed upgradeable | The FA401GM is explicitly listed with no memory expansion, and FA401EA’s options are not established here. | Get written confirmation for the exact regional SKU. |
The table is a decision aid, not a performance ranking. The FA401EA can be the right purchase if its measured results in your games meet your target and its price reflects the fixed configuration. The FA401GM is the less ambiguous choice when your workload is built around a discrete GPU, but its 32 GB onboard limit should be treated as permanent.

Reasons to consider the FA401EA
- It delivers a current gaming-laptop design with Radeon 8060S graphics integrated into the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 platform.
- It avoids the model confusion that comes from assuming every 2026 A14 has an RTX chip; buyers specifically seeking an integrated solution can identify the FA401EA by its SKU.
- Independent coverage from WIRED considers its gaming capability unusually close to discrete-GPU territory, subject to the test conditions behind that judgment.
- A shared CPU-and-GPU platform may appeal to buyers who value a compact design and do not need NVIDIA-specific software support.
Reasons to choose the FA401GM instead
- It has a separate RTX 5060 Laptop GPU with 8 GB GDDR7, making the graphics architecture straightforward for workloads that need dedicated VRAM.
- ASUS publishes a maximum 115 W graphics-power figure for Manual Mode, although that is a specification rather than a review measurement.
- Its graphics path is the more natural fit for applications that require NVIDIA APIs or features.
Risks for either configuration
- Regional SKU names can hide differences in memory, storage and display.
- The FA401GM’s memory is onboard and capped at 32 GB with no expansion.
- FA401EA memory choices, battery life, thermals, noise and complete game benchmarks require verification for the exact unit.
- Review headlines describe different priorities: technical capability in WIRED’s case and value in Tom’s Guide’s case.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Copy the full model code from the seller and confirm it is FA401EA or FA401GM, not only “A14 (2026).”
- For FA401EA, confirm that the listing explicitly says Ryzen AI Max+ 392 with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics.
- For FA401GM, confirm Ryzen AI 9 H 465, RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, 8 GB GDDR7 and the stated onboard-memory limit.
- Verify installed RAM, maximum RAM, SSD capacity and storage expansion for your country’s SKU.
- Check native display resolution, refresh rate, brightness and color information.
- Price the exact configuration with its charger, warranty and return policy included.
- Look for game-specific tests performed at the resolution and preset you intend to use; reject comparisons that omit those conditions.
- If memory cannot be expanded, buy the capacity you will need for the laptop’s full service life.
Final verdict
The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 (2026) FA401EA is a legitimate answer to the question “Can a gaming laptop work without a discrete GPU?” It is not a laptop with no graphics processor; it is the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 platform with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics. WIRED’s positive gaming assessment makes the concept credible, while Tom’s Guide’s value criticism is a reminder that technical ambition does not settle the buying decision.
Choose the FA401EA when its exact regional configuration has enough memory, its display and price suit you, and tests of your games show acceptable sustained performance. Choose the FA401GM when you specifically need an RTX 5060, dedicated 8 GB GDDR7 graphics memory or software tied to a discrete NVIDIA GPU. Above all, verify the SKU: the phrase “TUF Gaming A14 (2026)” alone does not identify which graphics solution you are getting.
