Neither router is a proven overall winner: the available sources do not provide a controlled, same-condition test of the ASUS RT-AX1800S and Xiaomi Mi Router AX1800. Choose by the exact model and revision sold in your market, current price, firmware support, and whether any mesh equipment you plan to add is explicitly compatible.
What the published Wi-Fi numbers do—and don’t—tell you
Xiaomi lists theoretical Wi-Fi 6 maxima of 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1,201 Mbps on 5 GHz for the Mi Router AX1800. Its global product page gives a combined theoretical dual-band maximum of 1,775 Mbps and cautions that “The actual rate will depend on the environment.” Xiaomi’s AX1800 specifications and global product page describe manufacturer figures, not measured internet speed or a result for a single client.
Those band figures are theoretical link-rate specifications; actual throughput depends on factors including distance, interference, the client device, and network conditions. The sources do not provide comparable ASUS figures or matched testing for both routers, so they cannot support a range, speed, or latency winner.

Ports and wired connections
Xiaomi lists one 10/100/1000M WAN port and three 10/100/1000M LAN ports on the Mi Router AX1800. That establishes its listed wired-port configuration, but the available model-specific material does not establish an ASUS port count for a direct comparison. Check the documentation for the exact RT-AX1800S version and regional SKU before buying if the number of Ethernet connections matters.

Check the ASUS model revision before updating firmware
ASUS distinguishes the RT-AX1800S from the RT-AX1800S V2 and provides separate firmware entries. Its support page lists firmware 3.0.0.4.388_34163 for the V2, dated 2026-09-29, and specifies that it applies only to V2. Check ASUS’s firmware and support page against the model label on your router; do not assume firmware for one revision applies to the other.
That release date is a snapshot, not a guarantee of the newest firmware now or of the update schedule in every region. Xiaomi’s current firmware and security-support lifecycle by region are not established here, so compare the official support information for the exact local model before purchase.

Will the Xiaomi AX1800 work with a mesh extender?
Xiaomi says the Mi Router AX1800 uses its first-generation mesh architecture and cannot form a mesh network with the Xiaomi Wi-Fi Range Extender AX1500, which uses a newer generation. Check Xiaomi’s mesh compatibility information before choosing an extender or another node: sharing a brand or having a mesh feature does not ensure that two devices can pair.
If whole-home coverage is important, confirm the specific router-and-node pairing in the manufacturer’s compatibility information before spending money. The documented AX1800/AX1500 incompatibility means the AX1500 should not be treated as a compatible mesh add-on for this router.

Coverage and placement
ASUS’s quick-start guide recommends placing the router centrally and using the supplied power adapter. See the ASUS quick-start guide for its setup guidance. This advice does not establish a coverage radius, and the available sources do not show a controlled comparison of the two routers’ range. For a large, multi-storey, or interference-heavy home, look for testing in a similar layout with similar client devices rather than relying on a claimed universal coverage winner.

DFS channel support
An independent RTINGS review notes that the ASUS RT-AX1800S lacks DFS channel support. Read the RTINGS review for that model. This is a specific limitation noted for the ASUS, not evidence that the Xiaomi performs better overall; the available material does not establish a comparable Xiaomi result.

Which AX1800 router should you buy?
- Consider the Xiaomi Mi Router AX1800 if its local price and support suit you, its listed one-gigabit WAN and three-gigabit LAN ports meet your needs, and any planned mesh nodes are confirmed compatible.
- Consider the ASUS RT-AX1800S if its local price, support, and documented features suit your setup. Verify whether the unit is the RT-AX1800S or RT-AX1800S V2 before checking firmware or buying accessories.
- For a demanding coverage or performance requirement, prioritize independent testing that matches your home, client devices, and use case. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner for speed, range, or latency.
