The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a better handheld, but not a faster generation. Its 7.4-inch OLED HDR display, revised grips, TMR joysticks and upgraded card reader make it feel more premium than the Xbox Ally X. However, the processor, memory, SSD capacity and 80Wh battery are effectively unchanged, while the launch price rises from $999 to $1,299. Existing Xbox Ally X owners should upgrade for the screen and controls—not for a major increase in frame rates.

That makes the X20 easiest to recommend to first-time premium buyers, OLED enthusiasts and collectors of its anniversary design. If your current Ally X already meets your performance and comfort needs, the $300 premium is difficult to justify on speed alone.

Hands-on design and controls

Tom’s Guide describes revised rubberized grips that make the X20 feel more secure during long sessions. ASUS also reshaped the face buttons, made the bumpers more tactile and fitted a transforming D-pad that can switch between a four-way feel for menu navigation and an eight-way feel for games that need diagonal input.

  • 🎮 WINDOWS 11 WITH XBOX & PC GAME ECOSYSTEM: Runs on Windows 11, providing full compatibility with Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, and other PC platforms—offering a true hybrid experience that blends console-style gaming with PC flexibility.

The TMR sticks are the most substantial control change. The system also retains Hall-effect analog triggers, adds two assignable grip buttons and supports HD haptics and six-axis gyro input. These changes improve the day-to-day feel even when a game runs at the same frame rate as it did on the older handheld.

The 7.4-inch panel fits into roughly the same overall device size, and ASUS reworked cooling with an additional vent. The anniversary chassis uses a translucent black-and-gold treatment. At 756g, the X20 is still a substantial Windows handheld, so the larger screen does not make it a lightweight alternative.

Performance: better screen, similar horsepower

Because the X20 and Xbox Ally X share the same core processor and memory configuration, PC Gamer reports broadly similar performance. In its 1080p Black Myth: Wukong chart, the X20 averaged 26 frames per second with a 19-FPS 1% low, compared with 20 FPS average and 17 FPS at the 1% low for the previous Ally X.

The two publications used different test procedures, power settings and, in some cases, different quality presets, so their numbers should not be treated as a single laboratory comparison. Together they establish the practical limit: demanding AAA games often need resolution scaling, an upscaler or reduced settings. At 1080p, cinematic presets can be too demanding for a consistently smooth experience, and the OLED panel makes shimmering and other image-quality artifacts easier to see.

Battery life and the OLED trade-off

The X20 keeps the Xbox Ally X’s 80Wh battery rather than adding capacity. Tom’s Guide measured 2 hours and 47 minutes of gaming battery life in its test. Actual runtime will vary with brightness, frame-rate limits, game workload, wireless radios and the selected power mode, but buyers should not assume the larger OLED screen brings longer endurance.

OLED improves black levels and HDR contrast, while the 120Hz refresh rate and variable refresh support help motion look cleaner when frame rates fluctuate. Those benefits are easiest to notice in dark games, HDR scenes and desktop use; they do not increase the handheld’s rendering capability.

How to decide whether to upgrade

Buy the X20 when

  • You want the strongest display experience in this product family, especially OLED contrast, HDR highlights and 120Hz variable refresh.
  • Your current handheld’s sticks, grips, bumpers or D-pad feel limiting during long sessions.
  • You are buying your first premium Windows handheld and prefer the X20’s controls and anniversary chassis.
  • You value a microSD Express slot, rear assignable buttons, gyro controls and the newer port selection.

Keep or choose the Xbox Ally X when

  • Your existing screen and controls are already comfortable.
  • Your priority is frame rate per dollar rather than OLED image quality.
  • You expected a processor-generation upgrade; the X20 does not provide one.
  • You can buy the previous model substantially below its US$999 MSRP, making the $300 launch premium harder to recover.

Consider the standard Xbox Ally separately

The US$599 standard Xbox Ally lowers the entry price, but ASUS positions it as a different performance tier. It should not be treated as a cheaper X20 or as a direct substitute for the Xbox Ally X comparison.

Verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a physical-design upgrade wrapped around last-generation performance. Its OLED HDR display, TMR sticks, improved grip and refined controls are compelling enough for new buyers and display-focused enthusiasts. For an Xbox Ally X owner, however, the unchanged processor, memory, storage and battery mean that the decision comes down to whether those quality-of-life improvements are worth US$1,299—not whether the X20 will transform game performance.
