Short answer: the Asus ProArt P16 with an RTX 5090 is a legitimate Windows creator workstation, but it is not a universal MacBook Pro replacement. Its advantages are Nvidia CUDA/RTX acceleration, Windows software compatibility, a 4K OLED touchscreen and substantial local GPU capability in a relatively thin 16-inch body. Independent testing finds Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro systems faster in CPU-focused work and considerably better on battery.

The “$7,000 MacBook Pro alternative” label describes a particular high-end configuration and regional comparison, not a universal current price. The useful comparison is between identical RAM, storage, graphics and display configurations bought in the same country on the same date.

What the ProArt P16 RTX 5090 actually is

The 2025 ProArt P16 H7606WX family is a creator-focused Windows laptop built around AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and, in its top configuration, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. It combines workstation-class graphics with a 16-inch 16:10 OLED touchscreen rather than using the thicker chassis typical of many high-power gaming systems.

ASUS lists up to 64GB of memory and up to 4TB of storage across the family, but lower-GPU versions exist. A price or performance statement that does not name the GPU tier can therefore be misleading.

How the $7,000 comparison holds up

There is no single current price that makes every ProArt P16 a $7,000 MacBook Pro alternative. ASUS Canada showed a ProArt P16 H7606 store price of $3,499.99, with $4,299.99 crossed out as a reference price. ASUS also warns that listed specifications may not be available in every store configuration.

Performance: where the RTX 5090 helps

The P16’s defining benefit is its discrete Nvidia GPU. GPU rendering, CUDA-dependent applications, local AI workloads and video tools that exploit RTX features can make better use of this hardware than software restricted to integrated or differently optimized graphics. Windows users who rely on Nvidia-specific plug-ins or utilities also avoid a platform change.

  • 64 GB RAM | 2 TB SSD
  • Windows 11 Pro

That does not mean the P16 wins every benchmark. Notebookcheck’s direct comparison found Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max systems significantly better in CPU performance and considerably better in battery life. CPU-heavy encoding, compiling, simulation or other sustained processor work can therefore favor the MacBook Pro even when the P16 has the stronger graphics option.

AMD rates the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 NPU at 50 TOPS, but an NPU figure is not a substitute for application-specific results. The deciding question is which parts of a real project use CUDA/RTX acceleration, which parts remain CPU-bound, and whether the software is available on Windows and macOS with the same features.

Display, size and the cost of carrying power

The 3,840×2,400 OLED touch panel is a major reason to choose the ProArt. OLED provides high contrast for grading and preview work, while touch input can be useful for timelines, canvases and direct navigation. ASUS describes the newer family as offering a 16-inch, 1,600-nit, 120Hz variable-refresh, anti-reflection OLED touchscreen; the exact refresh and brightness behavior should be checked against the purchased SKU.

Portability figures differ slightly by configuration. ASUS gives the RTX 5090 generation a 14.9mm chassis and 1.95kg weight. TechRadar measured approximately 35×24×1.5cm and 1.85kg for its reviewed 2025 configuration. Those numbers describe the computer alone; the 240W adapter adds significant bulk to a travel kit.

The thin body is impressive for this class of GPU, but it does not make the P16 an ultraportable. Maximum performance requires bringing the large adapter and usually staying near an outlet.

Battery life is the clearest MacBook disadvantage

Notebookcheck’s conclusion is unambiguous: M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models have considerably better battery life than the ProArt P16 RTX 5090. No single battery-hour number is supplied here because results change with screen brightness, 120Hz operation, graphics mode, workload and the exact P16 configuration.

For long flights, outlet-free editing sessions or a day of mixed office work, Apple’s efficiency is the safer choice. The P16 is better understood as a mobile workstation that can work unplugged when necessary, not as a machine designed to deliver MacBook-style endurance under heavy workloads.

Which machine fits your workflow?

Choose the ProArt P16 when

  • Your applications depend on Nvidia CUDA, RTX effects or local GPU-accelerated AI.
  • You need Windows-only software, plug-ins or peripherals.
  • A 4K OLED touchscreen and SD-card workflow are valuable for editing and content creation.
  • You prefer upgradeable, configurable PC storage and memory options where the specific SKU permits them.
  • You accept carrying a 240W adapter for sustained performance.

Choose a MacBook Pro when

  • CPU performance and battery endurance matter more than Nvidia-specific acceleration.
  • You regularly work away from power and want the lightest practical travel setup.
  • Your software is optimized for Apple silicon and does not require Windows or CUDA.
  • Quiet, efficient mobile operation is a higher priority than a discrete RTX 5090 GPU.

How to compare prices before buying

  1. Write down the exact ProArt model number and GPU tier; “P16” alone covers materially different systems.
  2. Match RAM and total SSD capacity on the MacBook Pro side.
  3. Compare display resolution, refresh rate and touch support rather than assuming every 16-inch panel is equivalent.
  4. Use prices from the same country and date, and identify whether a figure is a sale price, reference price, refurbished listing or launch MSRP.
  5. Add the practical cost of the P16’s 240W charger and any required Windows-specific software or peripherals.

Verdict

The Asus ProArt P16 RTX 5090 is a serious high-end Windows creator laptop, especially for Nvidia-accelerated video, 3D, AI and other GPU-heavy work. Its 4K OLED touchscreen, SD-card connectivity and relatively thin 16-inch chassis make it unusually attractive as a workstation you can carry.

It is not a blanket $7,000 MacBook Pro replacement. Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max systems retain the documented advantages in CPU performance and battery life, while the P16 wins when Windows, CUDA/RTX support, touch input or local Nvidia graphics are the requirements. Buy the P16 for those specific strengths, and evaluate the price using the exact SKU rather than the headline.
