For a permanent game-library expansion, an internal M.2 NVMe SSD is usually the better choice—if your exact ASUS laptop supports it. It stays inside the computer, leaves your USB ports free, and avoids cable-related disconnects. A portable USB SSD is preferable when you need removable storage, move a library between computers, or cannot (or do not want to) open the laptop.
There is no universal ASUS answer. Slot count, interface, physical dimensions, capacity limits, and whether the original drive must be replaced vary by complete model number and configuration. Verify those details before buying any drive.
Internal or external: the decision in one table
| Consideration | Internal M.2 NVMe upgrade | External USB SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Permanent, frequently played library and system expansion | Removable secondary storage, moving games between compatible computers, or avoiding laptop disassembly |
| Compatibility | Exact ASUS model must be checked for slot count, PCIe generation, drive size, sidedness, capacity limit, and whether the existing SSD must be replaced | USB connector, cable, and host-port compatibility; effective throughput is limited by the slowest link |
| Installation | Requires opening the laptop or arranging authorized service; model and region can affect procedure and warranty terms | Plug in, format if needed, and create a game-library location |
| While gaming | No occupied USB port or exposed cable | Must remain connected; a loose cable, port, or power interruption can interrupt access |
| Performance evidence | ASUS examples include PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 storage; Microsoft DirectStorage is designed for high-speed storage such as NVMe, but neither source proves a specific game will load faster after your upgrade | An ASUS USB 3.2 Gen 2 example is specified up to 10 Gbps; actual transfer rates vary with the host, device, cable, software, and use |
| Portability | Stays with the laptop | Easy to carry between compatible computers |
| Price comparison | No current like-for-like price comparison is established here; compare capacity, interface, enclosure, and compatibility after identifying your model | |
For most owners who have a supported spare slot, install the internal drive. Choose external storage when convenience and removability outweigh the disadvantages of a cable and occupied port.

Why the exact ASUS model matters
“ROG,” “TUF,” or “Zephyrus” is not a sufficient compatibility description. A product family can contain different motherboard layouts, regional configurations, and drive arrangements. ASUS states that you should use the technical specifications for the exact product to determine whether storage is upgradeable and what maximum specifications are supported.

What to record before shopping
- The complete model name and model number, including any suffix shown on the bottom label, BIOS information, or the original order record.
- Whether the machine has a free M.2 slot, one occupied slot, or only a replaceable drive.
- Supported interface, such as PCIe NVMe, and the generation listed by ASUS.
- Supported physical size and any single-sided, double-sided, heatsink, or clearance restriction.
- Maximum supported capacity and whether that limit applies per slot or to the whole system.
- Whether the laptop has a factory recovery partition or other data that must be cloned before replacing the original SSD.
What ASUS examples do—and do not—prove
The ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) specifications list two M.2 PCIe expansion slots. Some 2026 G16 configurations list PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 storage and two M.2 PCIe slots, with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports rated up to 10 Gbps and Thunderbolt 4 up to 40 Gbps. These are examples of particular G16 configurations, not a rule for every ASUS gaming laptop. Do not use a Zephyrus specification as compatibility advice for a TUF, ROG, or other notebook.
How to verify an internal SSD upgrade
- Identify the complete model. Use the label on the laptop, Windows System Information, BIOS, or your purchase documentation. Record the full identifier rather than only the family name.
- Open the exact product page on ASUS’s official site. Go to the technical specifications and find the storage section. ASUS’s support guidance specifically directs users there to establish upgrade support and maximum specifications.
- Confirm the slot arrangement. Check the number of M.2 slots and whether one is free. A second slot allows expansion without removing the factory drive; a single slot means you may need to clone and replace the original.
- Match the interface and size. Confirm PCIe/NVMe support, PCIe generation, the M.2 length, and any sidedness or clearance restrictions. A drive that physically fits but uses an unsupported interface is not a valid upgrade.
- Check capacity limits and the installed configuration. Treat the maximum stated by ASUS as model-specific. Do not infer a capacity limit from another laptop in the same family.
- Choose service or DIY only after reading model instructions. If the procedure, limit, or warranty effect is unclear, ASUS recommends contacting a local authorized service center.
- Back up or clone before opening the chassis. Preserve game saves, documents, recovery data, and any system installation you need. An expansion drive is simpler; replacing the boot drive requires a migration plan.
- Install and initialize the drive. Follow the exact model’s service instructions, then use Windows Disk Management to initialize and format an added drive if it is not already visible. Assign a stable drive letter before creating a game library.
ASUS published a 2023 upgrade notice describing an ambient-light-sensor power cutoff for only the notebook models listed in that notice. It is a safety design for those models, not a substitute for the service instructions for your laptop.
When an external SSD is the better answer
You need removable capacity
A portable SSD can move a game library between compatible systems and can be unplugged when you travel. It avoids opening the chassis and is the practical choice for a laptop that is difficult to service or still covered by terms you do not want to risk changing.

Your internal slots are full
If the exact specifications show no free slot and you do not want to replace the existing drive, external storage adds capacity without touching the internal installation.
You accept a connected accessory while playing
The trade-off is operational: the drive, cable, and port remain part of the gaming setup. A cable can be pulled, a connector can loosen, and the drive can disappear if the connection is interrupted.

Can you play games from an external SSD?
Yes. Steam lets you create a library location on another drive and move installed games between library locations. In the Steam desktop client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, add the external drive as a library location, and use the game’s move option in the storage manager.
Steam’s support documentation says it is not recommended to install Steam itself to an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. A separate Steam support page warns that external hard drives can connect or disconnect at inopportune times during normal operation, which can make installed games appear uninstalled. That wording concerns external hard drives; it is not a controlled benchmark of every portable SSD, cable, enclosure, or USB port. The practical lesson still applies: use a reliable connection, avoid unplugging the drive while Steam is running, and keep a frequently played library internal when possible.
Safer external-library habits
- Use the laptop’s fastest compatible USB port and the cable supplied or specified for the drive.
- Connect directly to the laptop rather than through an unpowered hub when possible.
- Keep the drive firmly supported so the cable is not bent or pulled during play.
- Wait for games and Steam to close before disconnecting; use Windows’ safe-removal command where available.
- If Steam reports a game as uninstalled after a disconnect, reconnect the same drive and library folder before starting a new download.
- Back up saves separately when a game does not synchronize them reliably.
Performance: what an SSD upgrade can and cannot change
SSD versus a hard disk drive
ASUS explains that an SSD has better read and write speed than an HDD and can improve the gaming experience. That is a storage-generation comparison. Replacing an HDD with an SSD can reduce storage-related waiting, but the cited guidance also notes that results depend on the device, software, game requirements, and graphics settings.
Internal NVMe versus external SSD
The available evidence does not establish a head-to-head benchmark for an ASUS laptop’s internal NVMe SSD versus a USB external SSD. Do not promise a loading-time percentage, a frame-rate increase, or a universal winner based only on interface labels.
Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a platform capability that lets games use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs for reads with minimal CPU overhead. It does not mean every game uses DirectStorage, nor that a particular ASUS laptop will show a measurable benefit after changing drives.

Interface numbers are ceilings, not game benchmarks
The ROG Strix Arion S500 manual lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps, with backward compatibility with USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0. It also says actual performance varies with applications, use, environment, and other factors, and recommends a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port for that interface’s high transfer rate. Those are interface specifications, not observed game-loading results.

Likewise, a G16 specification listing USB 3.2 Gen 2 up to 10 Gbps and Thunderbolt 4 up to 40 Gbps describes the port capability. The external SSD, enclosure, cable, controller, file system, queue depth, and workload can all reduce effective throughput. A faster port cannot make a slower drive perform at the port’s headline rate.
Game-library planning by scenario
| Your situation | Recommended direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have a confirmed free, compatible M.2 slot | Internal NVMe | Permanent capacity with no cable or occupied USB port |
| Your model has one slot and the factory SSD is too small | Replace internally if you are comfortable cloning or reinstalling; otherwise use external storage | Internal replacement is cleaner for a permanent library but requires migration and model-specific disassembly |
| You switch between several computers | External SSD | Portability outweighs the connection risk |
| You play a few large games from one laptop every day | Internal NVMe when supported | Reduces dependence on a cable and accidental disconnects |
| You cannot verify compatibility or do not want to open the chassis | External SSD | Lower installation risk; accept the need to stay connected |
| You are trying to increase FPS | Neither option should be purchased as an FPS upgrade | Storage can affect capacity and loading or asset reads, but the supplied evidence does not establish higher frame rates from an SSD-to-SSD change |

Comparing 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps labels as if they were loading tests
Problem: Port bandwidth is confused with real game performance.
Fix: Match the drive, enclosure, cable, and port, and regard the published number as an upper interface specification. No measured ASUS internal-versus-external game benchmark is established here.
Installing Steam itself on removable storage without considering reliability
Problem: Steam warns about potential performance issues, and a disconnect can make games appear uninstalled.

Expecting an SSD-to-SSD upgrade to raise frame rates
Problem: Storage is treated as a graphics-performance component.
Fix: Use an SSD upgrade to solve capacity, loading, and storage-read constraints. Evaluate GPU, CPU, memory, thermals, and game settings separately for FPS goals.
Opening the laptop without a model-specific procedure
Problem: Clips, cables, screws, battery connections, and warranty conditions differ.
Fix: Follow the exact service documentation or use an authorized service center. The 2023 ASUS safety notice applies only to its listed models.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the complete ASUS model number.
- Confirm internal M.2 slot availability and whether the current drive must be replaced.
- Match PCIe/NVMe support, physical length, sidedness, and capacity limit.
- Decide whether you need a permanent library or removable storage.
- For an external drive, verify the laptop port, connector, cable, and direct-connection plan.
- Budget for cloning, backup, or professional installation if replacing the boot drive.
- Do not use interface “up to” figures as promises of game-loading speed.
- Keep recovery media and save-game backups before moving or replacing storage.
Bottom line
Choose an internal M.2 NVMe SSD for a permanent, heavily used game library when your exact ASUS model confirms a compatible slot and capacity. Choose an external USB SSD for easy installation, portability, or a laptop you would rather not open. Both can expand game storage; neither is supported by the available evidence as a guaranteed FPS upgrade, and no ASUS-wide compatibility rule replaces checking your complete model specification.
