ASUS EZ Flash 3 is not the method to use when the CPU is removed. It runs from BIOS setup, so the system must be able to reach that utility. On supported motherboards, ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack is the separate option for updating with the system shut down or the CPU removed.
How the two ASUS update methods differ

ASUS describes EZ Flash 3 as a way to update BIOS without entering Windows; that does not mean it can update a board without a working route into BIOS setup. USB BIOS FlashBack is a distinct feature, not another name for EZ Flash 3.
What to do if a new CPU is not supported by the current BIOS
If the installed CPU cannot boot the board far enough to enter BIOS setup, check the exact motherboard model’s manual and specifications for USB BIOS FlashBack. If the board supports it, follow its model-specific FlashBack instructions and use the BIOS file provided for that board. If it does not, EZ Flash 3 cannot solve the problem unless the system can first reach BIOS setup with a supported CPU.
ASUS’s BIOS update guidance for motherboards and different CPU generations is another reference for checking the CPU and BIOS situation. Confirm the board model and its support information before choosing a method; neither feature is guaranteed across all ASUS motherboards.

Update BIOS with EZ Flash 3
- Get the correct BIOS file. On the support page for your exact motherboard model, download its BIOS archive and extract it to obtain the CAP file.
- Prepare a USB drive. ASUS recommends a drive of 1 GB or more, formatted as a single-sector FAT16/32 drive. Copy the extracted CAP file to it. Model-specific instructions may differ, so consult the board manual and BIOS download page.
- Open the utility. Enter BIOS setup. If needed, switch to Advanced Mode, then select Tools > ASUS EZ Flash 3 Utility.
- Select and verify the file. Choose the USB drive and BIOS file, then confirm the BIOS information displayed by the utility.
- Let the update finish. Allow the process to complete and the system to reboot. Do not shut down or reset the computer during the update; ASUS warns that an interruption can cause boot failure. Back up important data before updating.
