Asurion may fulfill a phone claim with a new or refurbished replacement; availability can affect what you receive. The phone’s appearance or packaging alone cannot confirm its history. To verify a specific replacement, check your claim paperwork and ask Asurion or your plan administrator to confirm the device linked to your claim.
What Asurion says about replacement phones
Asurion says it aims to replace a covered phone with the same make and model, but availability may affect the replacement. A claim may be fulfilled with a new or refurbished device, and the replacement may differ in color, brand, model, or features. Accessory compatibility is not guaranteed. The terms of your specific plan determine what applies to your claim.
Asurion’s official FAQ puts it this way: “Claims may be fulfilled with a new or refurbished replacement device.” The FAQ does not state what share of replacements are refurbished, so there is no supported percentage to use when judging your phone.

- Review your claim paperwork. Check the claim confirmation, replacement details, and any documents included with the phone for a description of its condition or status.
- Contact Asurion or your plan administrator. Provide your claim details and ask whether the specific replacement device recorded for your claim was new or refurbished. The plan administrator or provider can clarify which plan terms apply.
- Ask for clarification if the documents are inconclusive. Request confirmation tied to your claim rather than relying on general replacement policies. Asurion’s public guidance does not establish one universal label or verification method for every replacement.
What the phone’s condition can—and cannot—tell you
Asurion describes signs of a certified replacement, including a smooth startup and updates, limited cosmetic wear, a working battery and ports, warranty documentation, and successful activation. These are useful checks of the device’s condition and readiness, but they do not prove whether that particular phone is refurbished or new. A phone that looks pristine is not necessarily new, and cosmetic wear alone does not establish its history.

Likewise, packaging is not definitive evidence. The official guidance does not establish a universal packaging convention, IMEI lookup, or carrier procedure for identifying the history of every Asurion replacement. Do not infer refurbishment status from the box or the phone’s appearance alone.

Before accepting or completing a claim, compare the offered make and model, key features, availability, and the terms of the plan that covers your phone. Asurion says replacement details can vary and directs customers to their provider for program-specific information. Confirm what your plan allows instead of assuming you are entitled to a particular model or condition.
