Astronomy magazine’s “Our 16th annual STAR PRODUCTS” is an October 2025 gear roundup for amateur astronomers, not a single-product review or a ranked list. Phil Harrington’s feature presents 35 products alphabetically by manufacturer and addresses both visual observing and astrophotography.
What the feature is—and what it is not
The October 2025 feature is a broad selection of astronomy equipment. Its 35 entries are arranged alphabetically by manufacturer, rather than ordered by score, price, or an overall “best” ranking. The opening does not set out a formal scoring rubric, so the title should not be read as evidence that every product was tested against the others or that one is the right choice for every astronomer.
The intended audience includes people observing through telescopes and people making astrophotos. Those activities can call for different equipment and priorities. A roundup that includes both is most useful as a way to discover products and consider their stated purposes—not as a substitute for matching a particular item to your own setup.
Two examples show the range of equipment
Airy Disk Pro APO AP 85/510 refractor
The feature describes this telescope as an 85 mm, 510 mm focal-length triplet apochromatic refractor with Hoya FCD100 ED glass. Those specifications identify its aperture, focal length, optical design, and glass type; they do not, by themselves, establish how it will perform for a particular observer or imaging system. The available material does not independently verify its current price, stock, or availability.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Move-Shoot-Move Nomad Star Tracker
The Nomad is presented for wide-field and telephoto astrophotography. The feature describes a rechargeable battery and quick-release mounting system, and notes that kits may include accessories. That makes it a different kind of entry from a telescope: its stated context is tracking a camera for astrophotography, rather than serving as a general-purpose telescope for visual observing. Kit contents and availability can vary; current configurations were not verified.
How to use the roundup for your own decision
- Start with the activity. Decide whether you are looking for equipment for visual observing, astrophotography, or both. The product’s stated purpose matters more than its place in an alphabetical list.
- Check the relevant capability. For a telescope, consider whether its optical specifications suit your intended use. For a tracker, focus on the imaging situations it is described for, such as wide-field or telephoto photography.
- Account for setup and portability. Compare how an item would fit into the equipment you already use and how you plan to transport and mount it. The feature’s opening does not provide a common scoring framework for these considerations.
- Verify the exact configuration before buying. Confirm current availability, included accessories, and compatibility with your equipment from the manufacturer or seller. The October 2025 descriptions are not confirmation of present-day stock or kit contents.
How to interpret the 35-product count
The figure of 35 is the count stated for this particular feature, not a measure of the full astronomy-equipment market. The accessible October 2025 article material shows the introduction and the beginning of the product coverage, but does not establish the complete list of entries. It is therefore not possible to use that material to confirm every product in the roundup or to construct a verified comparison of all 35.

A separate October 2026 issue listing also uses the annual Star Products title. It is a later feature, not an update to the October 2025 article identified here. Readers looking for a specific product should make sure they are consulting the right issue and verify current product details separately.

What readers can conclude
The feature offers a cross-section of gear for amateur astronomers, including at least one refractor and one camera-tracking product in the available material. Its breadth is useful for exploring equipment categories, but the stated alphabetical organization and lack of a formal scoring rubric mean it should not be treated as a universal recommendation or a head-to-head test. Use each entry as a starting point, then assess whether its intended use and configuration fit your observing or imaging plans.
