Astronomers at the University of Warwick have identified what they describe as the first genuinely green star: the cool white dwarf WD J1330+6435. Its ghostly chartreuse color is not a telescope photograph. Researchers reconstructed it from the star’s spectrum and a model of human color vision, revealing how trace elements from a disrupted planetary system can reshape a stellar remnant’s apparent color.

What makes WD J1330+6435 look green?

WD J1330+6435 is a white dwarf, the dense remnant left after a Sun-like star exhausts its nuclear fuel and sheds its outer layers. The object is relatively cool for a white dwarf, at roughly 4,000 °C. Its atmosphere contains unusually high amounts of calcium, lithium and sodium, material that Warwick researchers say was accreted from rocky debris in the star’s former planetary system.

Sodium is the key to the modeled green appearance. It absorbs orange wavelengths in the star’s emitted light. With much of that orange removed, the remaining spectrum is interpreted by a human-vision model as a pale, chartreuse or “ghostly” green signal.

In the dense atmosphere of a white dwarf, atoms and molecules interact differently from those in thin, ordinary stellar gas. Absorption features can spread across much broader wavelength ranges, allowing small amounts of an element to alter the overall color that a distant observer would perceive.

Did astronomers actually see a green star?

Not directly. No white dwarf is close enough for its surface color to be seen by the unaided eye or resolved as a colored disk through a telescope. The green is a calculated human-eye appearance derived from spectroscopy: instruments record the star’s light across many wavelengths, and the researchers convert that spectrum into a predicted color.

That distinction matters. A spectrum is a measurement of light intensity by wavelength, not a color photograph. The result says what the star’s integrated light would probably look like to human vision under the model, rather than showing an image of a green point in the sky.

How common are colored white dwarfs?

The Warwick team examined a local sample of 151 white dwarfs within 20 parsecs of Earth—about 65 light-years. Five objects showed unusual modeled colors: two yellow and three pink. The researchers estimate that roughly one in 30 white dwarfs may shine with unusually colored light.

That minority does not change the ordinary meaning of “white dwarf.” Across the representative remainder of the sample, the median color temperature was approximately 6,800 K and the predicted appearance was white. “White” describes the typical integrated color of the population, not a rule that every individual white dwarf must look white.

Sample result Warwick’s reported figure
White dwarfs examined 151 within 20 parsecs (about 65 light-years)
Unusually colored objects 5: two yellow and three pink
Estimated unusual-color frequency About 1 in 30 white dwarfs
Median color temperature of the remaining representative sample Approximately 6,800 K, perceived as white

What other colors can white dwarfs have?

The study, “Any colour you like: The diverse chromaticities of white dwarfs,” published in RAS Techniques and Instruments (DOI 10.1093/rasti/rzag069), links color to atmospheric chemistry and the history of each stellar remnant.

Carbon-rich atmospheres: pink or purple

Some white dwarfs have carbon-rich outer layers. Their molecular carbon absorption can shift the modeled appearance toward pink or purple by removing selected parts of the spectrum.

Planetary debris: yellow or green

When a white dwarf consumes rocky debris, elements such as calcium, lithium and sodium can pollute its atmosphere. Depending on the mixture and the star’s temperature, broad absorption can produce yellowish colors or the green modeled appearance of WD J1330+6435.

Mixed hydrogen and helium: cyan or pale blue

White dwarfs with mixed hydrogen-helium atmospheres can be calculated as cyan or pale blue. These colors arise from the combined effects of atmospheric composition and the pressure conditions in the dense surface layers.

The unusually red comparison star

The same work highlights WD J1011+2845, about 48 light-years from Earth, as a possible record-red white dwarf. It has a deep convection zone that dredges carbon from the core to the surface. Carbon molecules then distort the outgoing light so strongly that almost all of the modeled output lies beyond 600 nanometres, producing a deep salmon-pink appearance.

Why this discovery matters

White-dwarf colors are more than a visual curiosity. The absorbing chemicals act as clues to a remnant’s atmospheric physics and its past. Calcium, lithium and sodium can indicate that rocky planetary material survived the original star’s evolution and was later pulled onto the white dwarf. Carbon brought to the surface instead records mixing and convection inside the remnant.

Color modeling therefore gives astronomers another way to sort a large population of faint objects before examining their spectra in detail. A rare green, yellow or pink prediction can flag an atmosphere whose chemistry, temperature or evolutionary history differs from the norm.

How the result was established

  1. Collect spectra: Astronomers use routine spectroscopic observations that measure each white dwarf’s light across wavelengths.
  2. Model atmospheric effects: They account for the high density of white-dwarf atmospheres and the broad absorption caused by trace elements and molecules.
  3. Convert spectra to perception: The calculated spectrum is passed through a human-vision color model to estimate the apparent hue.
  4. Compare a local population: The team checks unusual colors against the 151-object sample within 20 parsecs, separating rare atmospheric signatures from the normal white appearance.

The approach explains both why WD J1330+6435 qualifies as the first credibly green star in the team’s analysis and why the claim should not be read as a direct visual observation. It is a physically informed color reconstruction tied to measured spectra.

Can you see WD J1330+6435 from Earth?

Not as a green star. Its distance and faintness mean that observers cannot look through a telescope and see a green disk or colored point. Even a future image would not replace spectroscopy for identifying the chemical absorption that creates the modeled hue. The scientifically meaningful observation is the spectrum and the atmospheric interpretation built from it.

Bottom line

WD J1330+6435 is the first white dwarf credibly modeled as genuinely green. Sodium left behind by accreted planetary material absorbs orange light in its dense atmosphere, while spectroscopy and human-vision modeling predict the remaining light as chartreuse. The finding expands white dwarfs from a seemingly uniform class into a chemically diverse population that can appear white, yellow, pink, purple, cyan or green—although the typical white dwarf remains white.
