The Astell&Kern SP4000T is a high-end portable digital audio player built around a distinctive choice: listen through op-amp amplification, tube amplification, or a hybrid of the two. Its four vacuum tubes and adjustable tube settings make it more configurable than a conventional player, but the manufacturer’s specifications alone cannot establish whether those options sound better—or whether its roughly 565 g body is practical for your daily carry.
Astell&Kern lists the SP4000T at $3,300 on its product page. Treat that as the manufacturer-displayed price, not a verified current street price. This is a specifications-based assessment, not a hands-on listening review; sound quality, real-world battery life, heat, reliability, and comparative performance are not independently established here.
What the SP4000T is—and what this review can establish
The SP4000T is part of Astell&Kern’s A&ultima line. The company positions it as a portable player that combines digital audio processing with three amplification choices: Tube AMP, OP AMP, and Hybrid AMP. Its official specifications include dual AK4191EQ processors, dual AK4499EX DACs, and four Raytheon JAN6418 vacuum tubes. These are manufacturer-listed components and design features, not independent evidence of audible superiority. Astell&Kern’s SP4000T specifications
Astell&Kern frames the product around the question, “How can we bring deeper emotion through analog sound?” That is the company’s stated design ambition, rather than a measured conclusion about how the player sounds. The feature set is unusually focused on giving listeners control over the amplification path and tube operation; whether that control justifies the price depends on personal listening preference and fit with your headphones.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the tube and amplifier modes work
The player offers three amplifier modes. Tube operation is available in Tube AMP and Hybrid AMP; OP AMP is the non-tube option. Within tube operation, the manufacturer lists three tube settings and three selectable tube-current levels.
| Setting | What Astell&Kern says it does | What that means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Triode | Emphasizes tube harmonic texture. | A manufacturer-described tonal option; not an independently verified sound result. |
| Ultra Linear | Balances Triode’s tonal character and Pentode output. | An intended middle ground, according to the manufacturer. |
| Pentode | Maximizes tube amplifier output and dynamic range. | A manufacturer-described output-oriented option; not a guarantee of headphone compatibility. |
The three tube-current levels adjust the tube amplification operating point, according to Astell&Kern. The specifications do not quantify how much those levels change sound, power consumption, or heat. As a result, the modes are best understood as additional listening controls—not proof that one setting will be preferable or that the tube character will suit every headphone.

Outputs and headphone matching
For wired headphones, the SP4000T provides a 3.5 mm unbalanced output and a 4.4 mm balanced output, with five-pole support listed for the balanced connection. The product page specifies no-load output levels of 4.2 Vrms unbalanced and 8 Vrms balanced, alongside output impedances of 0.7 ohm and 1.7 ohm, respectively. These figures describe the player’s listed outputs; they do not guarantee a suitable match with a particular headphone or IEM. Check your headphone’s connector and requirements before buying, and do not assume balanced output is inherently better or necessary.
The player also lists a 3.5 mm optical output. Its wireless specifications include Bluetooth 5.2, with A2DP, AVRCP, aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC, and AAC listed, plus dual-band Wi-Fi supporting 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax on 2.4 and 5 GHz. These are supported connection standards and codecs, not a claim that every wireless device will use every codec.

Portability, storage and battery life
The SP4000T has a 6-inch, 2160 × 1080 touch display and measures 85.7 × 150 × 19.5 mm. At approximately 565 g, it is substantial for a device described as portable. The dimensions and weight make it more plausible as a player carried in a bag than as an unobtrusive pocket device; whether that works for you depends on how and where you listen.
Internal storage is 256 GB, with one microSD slot supporting cards up to 1.5 TB, according to the manufacturer. That gives buyers room for a large local library, though actual usable capacity will differ from the nominal figures because of formatting and system use.

Astell&Kern lists a 7,450 mAh, 3.8 V lithium-polymer battery and approximately five hours to charge with PD 3.0. Its approximately 10-hour playback figure applies under a specific stated test configuration: FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, volume 80, screen off, and low gain. It should not be treated as a typical runtime for other formats, higher gain or volume, or screen use.

The manufacturer lists decoding up to PCM 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512. Supported format examples include WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF, and DSF. For listeners whose libraries already use common lossless formats, the headline resolution limits are unlikely to be the only deciding factor; the practical questions are headphone matching, interface, battery behavior, and whether the amplification options matter to them.

Price and who should consider it
Astell&Kern’s product page displays a price of $3,300. That is the manufacturer-listed figure, not confirmation of current retail pricing, regional price, stock, warranty terms, or availability. Check a local seller for those details before making a purchase.
The SP4000T is most relevant to listeners who specifically want multiple amplification paths and adjustable tube operation in a portable player, and who are prepared to carry a large, heavy device. It is harder to justify on the available evidence if your priority is proven sound improvement, light everyday portability, or a confirmed battery advantage: none of those outcomes is established by the specifications alone. Before spending at this level, audition the player with your own headphones if possible and verify current pricing and return terms.
