AST SpaceMobile and Starlink Direct to Cell both extend a mobile operator’s network to ordinary compatible phones outside terrestrial tower coverage, but they do it with different satellite architectures and service strategies. AST describes BlueBird as a broadband cellular satellite with very large phased-array antennas. A phone connects to BlueBird, the satellite relays traffic to a ground gateway, and that gateway compensates for delay and Doppler effects before routing traffic into a partner operator’s network. SpaceX describes Starlink Direct to Cell satellites as LTE cell towers in space: the satellite carries an LTE modem payload, uses a partner’s mobile spectrum, and sends traffic through Starlink infrastructure into the operator’s core network.

Neither service is a universal satellite-internet replacement or a guaranteed feature of every normal phone plan. Country, carrier agreement, regulatory authorization, handset compatibility, outdoor conditions, and plan eligibility determine what a person can actually use. The evidence available through October 13, 2026, does not establish an independent, apples-to-apples winner for speed, reliability, or coverage.

What the two services are—and what they are not

Both systems are carrier-integrated satellite-to-phone networks. They are intended to keep a participating mobile operator’s customers connected when conventional towers are unavailable, rather than requiring a separate satellite phone subscription and an external terminal. The operator remains central: it supplies or authorizes spectrum, integrates the service with its network, determines supported plans, and must comply with local rules.

That distinction matters when interpreting phrases such as “works with your existing phone.” It means the satellite link is designed for compatible cellular handsets, not that every handset, carrier, country, or plan will automatically gain service. A phone may need a supported LTE band, current software, an eligible plan, and a clear view of the sky. The service may also be limited to particular message types or locations during an initial rollout.

How AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird network works

Phone to satellite to gateway to carrier

AST SpaceMobile says a compatible phone can connect directly to a BlueBird satellite when it is outside terrestrial tower range. BlueBird then relays the signal to a ground gateway. According to AST’s How It Works explanation, the gateway compensates for satellite delay and Doppler shift and routes the connection into the mobile operator’s network. From the subscriber’s point of view, that last step is important: calls, messages, and data are handled through the participating operator rather than through an isolated satellite-phone network.

AST says a country may need only one or a few gateways, although actual gateway deployment and authorization are market-specific. Gateway availability, backhaul, spectrum permissions, and the operator’s core-network integration therefore affect whether a satellite can provide a usable service in a particular area.

Large phased arrays and broadband ambition

AST describes BlueBird as a cellular broadband satellite using thousands of antennas and large phased arrays. Its current network material gives the next-generation array size as 2,400 square feet, a vendor specification rather than an independently measured dimension. AST also states that each next-generation BlueBird can deliver more than 150 Mbps per coverage cell across more than 2,000 cells, with 10 GHz of processing bandwidth. Those are company specifications and peak or system-level claims; they are not a promise that one subscriber will receive 150 Mbps, nor are they a substitute for a controlled network test.

AST presents the intended use as full cellular broadband, including voice, video, text messaging, streaming, and applications. The company’s wording is that there are “No satellite phones. No additional hardware or software. Just full broadband, direct from space to your existing mobile device.” That statement describes AST’s design goal and device proposition. Actual service still depends on the participating operator’s commercial launch, supported handset, plan, spectrum, and local authorization.

Spectrum and operator relationships

AST says BlueBird uses frequencies licensed by mobile-network-operator partners together with AST’s own global spectrum holdings. The company says it has partnered with more than 60 mobile network operators worldwide. Those partnerships do not all represent the same retail product or launch date. AST says operators determine flexible plan options, so a customer must check the local carrier instead of assuming that every announced partner offers the same services.

How Starlink Direct to Cell works

LTE payloads in orbit

SpaceX’s January 10, 2024 technical update describes Direct to Cell satellites as satellites equipped with LTE modem payloads that “act like cell towers in space.” The satellite performs the radio-access function that a terrestrial LTE tower normally performs. SpaceX says the system is designed to work with standard LTE phones without a special satellite handset or a hardware or software change to the phone.

The satellite is only one part of the path. Starlink’s own satellite and ground infrastructure carries traffic toward the participating mobile operator, where it is handed into that operator’s core network. SpaceX compares the integration to a standard roaming relationship: the partner supplies the cellular identity and spectrum relationship, while Starlink supplies the space and ground transport infrastructure.

Partner spectrum

SpaceX’s January 2024 update says operator partners provide LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range. The exact band, authorization, and permitted service differ by country and carrier. A phone that supports one operator’s terrestrial LTE bands is not automatically eligible for another operator’s Direct to Cell service, and regulatory approval can limit where a satellite beam may be used.

Feature rollout rather than one fixed product

Starlink Direct to Cell has been described through dated rollout announcements rather than one globally uniform feature set. SpaceX’s February 2025 service announcement said satellite messaging was commercially available in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ. The same announcement said the company planned to expand toward IoT, data, and voice services. Those statements describe the status and plans reported at that time; they should not be treated as a definitive October 2026 country list or as proof that every named feature is available to every customer today.

Side-by-side comparison

Comparison point AST SpaceMobile / BlueBird Starlink Direct to Cell
Satellite role Broadband cellular satellite with large phased arrays; relays traffic to a ground gateway Satellite with an LTE modem payload described as a cell tower in space; uses Starlink infrastructure for transport
Network handoff Gateway compensates for delay and Doppler effects, then routes traffic into a mobile operator network Traffic travels through Starlink infrastructure and is handed into the participating operator’s core network
Spectrum description Mobile-operator-licensed spectrum plus AST’s own global holdings Partner-provided LTE spectrum; SpaceX’s January 2024 update cites 1.6–2.7 GHz
Stated service emphasis Space-based cellular broadband, with company materials discussing voice, video, texts, streaming, and apps Messaging was identified as commercially available with named operators in a February 2025 announcement; data, voice, and IoT were described as rollout goals
Phone proposition AST says existing smartphones need no satellite phone or additional hardware or software SpaceX describes standard LTE phones, without hardware or software changes
Commercial dependency Partner carrier, plan, handset, spectrum rights, gateways, and local approvals Partner carrier, plan, handset, spectrum rights, regulatory authorization, and rollout stage
Published network figures 2,400-square-foot next-generation array; more than 150 Mbps per coverage cell; 10 GHz processing bandwidth; all are AST specifications 1.6–2.7 GHz partner LTE spectrum range cited in SpaceX’s technical update

The figures in this table are not equivalent measurements. AST’s throughput number is a vendor-stated peak per coverage cell, while Starlink’s cited number is a spectrum range. Neither establishes an individual user’s speed.

Device compatibility: “normal phone” has conditions

What AST says

AST’s device proposition is an existing mobile phone connecting directly to BlueBird, with no dedicated satellite handset and no additional accessory. That does not remove the need for a participating operator. The carrier must support the service, provision the subscriber, and approve the handset and network bands for the relevant market.

What Starlink says

SpaceX describes Direct to Cell as compatible with standard LTE phones. In practice, “standard” means a phone with the required LTE support and carrier configuration. A phone locked to a different operator, an obsolete handset, or a model lacking the partner’s supported bands may fail even if it is physically capable of cellular service.

What to check before relying on it

  • Confirm that your country and carrier currently sell or include the satellite-to-phone service; an announced partnership is not proof of retail availability.
  • Use the carrier’s supported-device list, not only the satellite provider’s general description.
  • Check whether the service is included in your plan, requires an add-on, or is restricted to certain account types.
  • Install required carrier or operating-system updates and keep the phone’s cellular radio enabled.
  • Expect the best chance of connection outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky; buildings, dense foliage, terrain, and severe weather can reduce availability.
  • Read the feature limits: messaging may launch before ordinary data, voice, or app traffic, and emergency functionality can have separate rules.

Carrier, country, and plan availability

Why a partnership list is not a coverage map

AST’s timeline and network pages identify arrangements with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, stc group, and other operators. SpaceX’s January 2024 technical update named T-Mobile, Rogers, Optus, One NZ, KDDI, Salt, and Entel as announced partners at that publication time. These names show commercial or technical relationships, not a single global launch. Agreements can cover testing, future capacity, selected markets, or a service that has not yet reached every customer.

AST’s timeline records a Verizon partnership in May 2024 and a definitive commercial agreement in October 2025, with service anticipated to begin in 2026. That wording does not confirm an exact launch date or availability for every Verizon customer. It also records a Vodafone agreement in December 2024 and a ten-year stc group agreement in October 2025.

One carrier example: T-Satellite

T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service page illustrates the checks a customer must make. T-Mobile describes the service as connecting customers where towers cannot, but specifies compatible devices, outdoor coverage conditions, service limitations, and plan-dependent inclusion or add-on pricing. That page is a carrier-specific example, not evidence that every operator uses the same price, eligibility rule, feature set, or coverage footprint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current decision, open the relevant carrier’s satellite-service page, enter your address or ZIP code if a checker is provided, verify your exact phone model, and read the plan terms. Check again close to travel: rollout status and supported devices can change after a partnership announcement.

Deployment milestones that put the comparison in context

AST’s company timeline lists these BlueBird launches:

  • BlueBird 1–5: September 12, 2024
  • BlueBird 6: December 23, 2025
  • BlueBird 7: April 19, 2026
  • BlueBird 8–10: June 17, 2026
  • BlueBird 11–13: August 5, 2026

These dates are company-reported milestones. A launch does not by itself mean that commercial service is active over every location beneath a satellite’s path. The constellation still needs operational testing, gateway and carrier integration, spectrum authorization, and a customer offer.

SpaceX’s service history is similarly stage-based. Its February 2025 announcement identified commercially available satellite messaging in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ, while describing broader data, voice, and IoT expansion as part of the rollout. Current availability must be confirmed with the operator because the announcement is dated and service status can change.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about performance

Why advertised speed is not a head-to-head result

AST’s “more than 150 Mbps per coverage cell” is a company-stated peak or system-capacity claim tied to a next-generation BlueBird design. It is shared cell capacity, not a guaranteed subscriber rate. User throughput would depend on the number of active users, radio conditions, spectrum, gateway backhaul, handset capability, and the operator’s core network.

The cited Starlink material establishes an LTE satellite architecture and a partner spectrum range, but it does not provide a matching current per-cell or per-user speed figure in the supplied material. Comparing AST’s peak cell claim with a Starlink messaging launch would therefore compare unlike quantities.

Why coverage is more than satellite footprint

A satellite may pass over an area without a customer being able to connect. The operator must be authorized to use the spectrum there; a gateway or equivalent network path must be available; the phone must be eligible; and the plan must permit the service. Local terrain, buildings, vegetation, satellite elevation, beam scheduling, and network demand also influence the experience.

Why reliability needs independent testing

The available evidence consists of company architecture descriptions, company specifications, dated announcements, and a carrier service page. It does not establish a current controlled test comparing the two systems under identical locations, phones, weather, load, and message or data workloads. It is therefore not defensible to claim that AST is universally faster, that Starlink is universally more reliable, or that either has broader real-world coverage everywhere.

You need broadband data, calls, or streaming

AST’s published positioning is more explicitly broadband-oriented, including voice, video, streaming, and applications. That is an intended service emphasis, not proof of universal commercial access or a guaranteed speed. Ask the operator whether those features are live in your location and included in your plan. Starlink’s February 2025 announcement described data and voice as expansion goals at that time, so confirm the current feature set rather than relying on the original announcement.

You are choosing a phone or plan

Choose the operator first, because the service is carrier-integrated. Compare supported handset models, plan inclusion or add-on cost, message and data limits, emergency-service behavior, and the countries or regions where the carrier authorizes use. Buying a dedicated satellite phone, a Starlink dish, or an external antenna will not enable the specific direct-to-phone services described here.

A practical verification checklist before travel

  1. Identify the local operator. Find the carrier that actually offers the satellite-to-phone feature in the country where you will use it.
  2. Confirm current status. Distinguish “commercially available” from “announced,” “testing,” “planned,” or “coverage expected.”
  3. Verify your exact handset. Check model number, LTE-band support, software version, carrier lock, and the operator’s compatibility list.
  4. Read plan terms. Look for inclusion, add-on pricing, data or message limits, supported applications, and restrictions by account type or location.
  5. Check operating conditions. Plan to use the phone outdoors with the clearest possible sky view and allow time for the phone to acquire a satellite.
  6. Prepare a fallback. Carry offline maps, written emergency contacts, a power bank, and another communication method where the consequences of a failed connection are serious.
  7. Test before departure. If the operator permits testing, try the service locally in an open area and learn the on-screen indicator or message flow.

Common misconceptions and their corrections

“A satellite partnership means I am covered.”

No. A partnership announcement may precede commercial launch, may apply only to selected regions, or may support a future feature. Retail eligibility comes from the operator’s current plan and device pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Any unlocked LTE phone will work.”

No. The handset must support the partner’s bands and configuration, and the carrier may limit service to a tested device list or current software version.

“AST’s 150 Mbps means my phone will download at 150 Mbps.”

No. AST states more than 150 Mbps per coverage cell, a shared vendor-stated peak capacity. It is not a per-subscriber guarantee or an independent measurement.

“Direct to Cell replaces a Starlink terminal.”

Direct to Cell is a satellite-to-phone service integrated with a mobile operator. A conventional Starlink terminal is a different product category and is not required for the phone service described here.

“No tower means no limits.”

Satellite access still depends on sky visibility, satellite geometry, beam capacity, gateway or network integration, spectrum authorization, plan rules, and the phone’s radio capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: the meaningful difference is architecture and rollout, not a universal winner

AST SpaceMobile describes BlueBird as a large-array broadband cellular system whose signal passes through a ground gateway before entering a partner operator’s network. Starlink Direct to Cell describes LTE payloads on satellites that function like towers in space and use Starlink infrastructure to reach the partner’s core. Both aim to use ordinary compatible phones, but both remain dependent on carrier integration, spectrum rights, regulation, device support, and plan eligibility.

AST’s published materials make the stronger broadband-capacity case, including its stated 2,400-square-foot arrays, more than 150 Mbps per coverage cell, and 10 GHz processing bandwidth. Starlink’s dated public rollout material provides clearer evidence of an early commercial messaging offer with named operators and describes broader data, voice, and IoT expansion. Those are different kinds of evidence, so they do not prove that one network is faster or more reliable overall. For a real purchase or travel decision, the decisive source is the participating carrier’s current country-specific coverage, device, and plan information.
