AST SpaceMobile and Starlink Direct to Cell are not yet interchangeable consumer services. AST describes a carrier-integrated broadband service intended to bring voice, video, messaging, apps, streaming, and downloads to ordinary smartphones. SpaceX’s February 2025 service announcement documented commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand, while describing data, voice, and IoT as expansion goals. Those disclosures have different dates and maturity levels, so the only reliable way to determine what works for you in October 2026 is to check your carrier’s current country, plan, handset, and feature eligibility.
This guide separates announced capabilities from documented commercial availability, explains the coverage plans, and shows exactly what to verify before changing a phone or mobile plan.
AST SpaceMobile vs. Starlink Direct to Cell at a glance
Both systems use satellites and partner mobile operators to extend connectivity to normal phones rather than requiring a dedicated satellite handset or terminal. The important difference is what the providers had publicly documented, and when they documented it.

| Question | AST SpaceMobile | Starlink Direct to Cell |
|---|---|---|
| Documented service position | Planned carrier-integrated cellular broadband, with voice, video, messaging, apps, streaming and downloads among the intended uses. | SpaceX’s February 2025 announcement documented commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand; data, voice and IoT were described as future expansion. |
| Phone approach | AST says an existing everyday smartphone needs no special device, software update or app. A current model-by-model list is not supplied. | The February 2025 document describes 4G LTE mobile phones. It does not provide an exhaustive handset list for every operator or country. |
| Network relationship | Mobile operators integrate the satellite layer with their terrestrial networks and determine plans and prices. | Partner operators provide terrestrial networks and LTE spectrum; the satellite system integrates with those operators. |
| Coverage evidence | AST expects 45–60 BlueBird satellites to support continuous coverage in selected strategic markets and about 90 for anticipated worldwide 24/7 coverage. Its initial U.S. beta target is non-continuous nationwide coverage through AT&T and Verizon. | SpaceX reported more than 400 Direct to Cell satellites launched in February 2025. That dated figure is not a current coverage map or present satellite count. |
| Current price | No universal consumer rate is established. AST describes possible day-pass, monthly add-on, emergency-use and standalone-plan concepts, with operators setting prices. | No price is established in the cited announcement. The participating operator determines whether access is included, added to a plan or separately charged. |
| Best evidence-based conclusion | Broader broadband capability is the stated objective, but rollout and local availability must be verified. | Messaging was the specifically documented commercial feature in the February 2025 snapshot; do not treat that document as a complete October 2026 feature list. |
The comparison is therefore not a simple “which is faster?” contest. One source describes a forward-looking broadband architecture, while the other records a dated messaging launch and future goals.

What each service is designed to do
AST SpaceMobile: cellular broadband from orbit
AST says its SpaceMobile network is designed to connect directly to standard smartphones through mobile-operator partnerships. Its official FAQ lists intended uses including voice calls, video calls, streaming, app use, messaging and downloads at 4G/5G speeds. The company presents the satellite layer as an extension of a carrier network, rather than a separate consumer satellite phone service.
That wording describes the service’s target capability, not a promise that every listed feature is live in every market. The same FAQ says existing smartphones can be used without a special device, software update or app, but it does not publish a current, universal handset matrix. Your operator still has to confirm whether your exact phone, plan and location are eligible.
Starlink Direct to Cell: a dated commercial messaging launch
SpaceX’s February 2025 Direct to Cell announcement said satellite messaging was commercially available with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand. It described data, voice and IoT as capabilities the program would work toward, not as features that announcement established for consumers at that time.

Because the announcement is dated February 2025, it should be read as a historical service snapshot. It is not a live October 2026 service locator, current feature table or guarantee that a particular operator now supports voice or data.
Coverage, continuity and rollout
AST’s satellite and beta expectations
AST’s network description and FAQ say 45–60 BlueBird satellites are expected to enable continuous coverage across selected strategic markets, including the United States, Europe and Japan. AST says approximately 90 satellites are expected to provide global 24/7 coverage. These are company expectations about constellation scale and future coverage; they do not establish that every location is currently live.
For the United States, AST describes an initial beta through AT&T and Verizon targeting non-continuous nationwide coverage. “Non-continuous” matters: a phone may not have a satellite path at every moment or in every place during an early rollout. A beta target is also not the same as a retail service guarantee.
AST’s connection model is intended to switch between ordinary cell towers and satellites through its mobile-operator partners. In a location with terrestrial service, your normal carrier network remains the relevant connection; satellite access is for places or moments when the operator’s terrestrial layer cannot reach you.

The February 2025 Starlink document listed commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand. It also referred to other operator markets as testing or planned rollout. It did not provide a universal country list, a handset-by-handset table or a current coverage map.
SpaceX reported more than 400 Direct to Cell satellites launched in that February 2025 document. Treat that as a company-reported count at that date, not as the number operating today. Satellite count alone cannot tell you whether your carrier offers service, whether a message will go through at a specific location or whether data and voice are enabled.
Regulatory context in the United States
The Federal Communications Commission’s FCC 24-136 order provides regulatory context for supplemental coverage from space and records authorization involving SpaceX and then-pending AST arrangements. It predates later commercial developments. Use it to understand the regulatory framework, not as a current availability map or proof that a service is active in your county.
What “coverage” means for a real user
Ask the carrier three separate questions instead of accepting a single coverage claim:
- Is the service sold or enabled in my country and on my account today?
- Is coverage continuous, scheduled, intermittent or limited to particular outdoor locations?
- Which features work over the satellite link: messaging only, or also voice, data, apps and video?
Neither provider’s cited material supplies a shared, current October 2026 map that answers all three questions for every market.
Phone, software and equipment requirements
What AST says you need
AST’s FAQ answers its equipment question with an “existing, everyday smartphone” and says no special device, software update or app is needed. That is a general access statement. It is not a current list of supported iPhone or Android models, operating-system versions, radio bands or carrier plans.

What Starlink’s announcement says you need
SpaceX’s February 2025 document refers to 4G LTE mobile phones. It explains that partner operators supply terrestrial networks and LTE spectrum integrated with the satellite system. The document does not establish compatibility for every LTE handset, every carrier or every country.
Do not buy a phone or accessory on assumption
The cited descriptions identify no required external antenna, satellite terminal or dedicated communicator. They also do not identify a specific retail handset that guarantees access. Before purchasing anything, ask the operator to confirm the exact handset model, operating system, country, account type, plan and supported features. A phone that is technically LTE-capable may still be excluded by a carrier’s service policy.
Clear-sky and indoor-use questions
AST’s FAQ includes the natural reader question “Does service require a clear view of the sky?” The materials cited here do not provide a definitive, universal answer for every phone, carrier or feature. Ask the participating operator about trees, buildings, vehicle roofs, indoor use and the minimum outdoor conditions for the specific service you are considering.
Features: available, intended or still future?
| Feature | AST SpaceMobile evidence | Starlink Direct to Cell evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Text or satellite messaging | Included among AST’s intended service uses; local availability is not established by the cited pages. | Commercially available with T-Mobile in the U.S. and One NZ in New Zealand in SpaceX’s February 2025 announcement. |
| Voice calls | Listed as an intended capability. | Described as a future expansion goal in the February 2025 document. |
| Video calls and streaming | Listed as intended broadband uses. | Not established as commercially available by the cited announcement. |
| General data and apps | AST describes app use and downloads at 4G/5G speeds as intended capabilities. | Data was described as a future goal in February 2025. |
| IoT | Not established in the cited AST consumer FAQ. | Described as a future expansion goal in February 2025. |
Do not convert an intended capability into a present service promise. A carrier may enable only a subset of features, impose data limits, or launch them in different countries at different times.
Speed claims and what they do—and do not—prove
AST’s FAQ lists a 98.9 Mbps peak test speed from May 2026. That is an AST-reported peak result, not typical performance and not a Starlink comparison. The FAQ also describes more than 150 Mbps peak per coverage cell for next-generation BlueBird capability. A per-cell design or peak figure is not the speed an individual user will routinely receive.
Actual throughput depends on satellite visibility, spectrum, capacity shared by users, the phone, the carrier configuration and whether the connection is terrestrial or satellite. No independent, comparable real-world speed statistic for both services is established in the cited sources. It would be misleading to rank one as faster from these numbers.
AST’s FAQ also links a GSMA statistic saying more than 87% of Earth’s surface lies outside traditional cell-tower reach. The publication year of the original GSMA material is not established in the cited evidence, so treat the figure as a statistic AST references, not as an independently verified current measurement here.
Pricing and plan structure
AST’s possible plan formats
AST says mobile operators determine cost and names possible day passes, monthly add-ons and emergency-use options. Its connection page also describes a standalone-plan concept for remote areas and says pricing varies by market. These are plan concepts, not a published universal rate card. A carrier may offer none of them, combine them with an existing plan or restrict them to particular customers.
Starlink Direct to Cell pricing
The February 2025 Starlink announcement does not establish a price for consumers. The participating operator may include messaging in a qualifying plan, sell it as an add-on, provide an emergency benefit or price it separately. Do not assume that a Starlink-branded satellite plan is available directly to you.
What to verify before signing up
- Open your operator’s current service page for your country, not a U.S. or New Zealand page copied into another market.
- Check whether satellite access is included, an add-on, emergency-only or separately metered.
- Read the feature list for messaging, voice, data, media, attachments and app traffic.
- Confirm recurring charges, one-time passes, data limits, throttling, emergency terms and cancellation rules.
- Match the plan to your exact phone model and account type.
No current price for either compared service is established by the cited evidence, so any exact figure found elsewhere should be checked against the operator’s live terms and date.
How to choose between them without guessing
Choose based on messaging need
If you need only occasional text contact outside tower coverage, first check whether your carrier currently offers satellite messaging and which contacts, attachments and emergency functions it supports. Starlink’s February 2025 announcement gives the clearest documented commercial messaging examples, but those examples do not prove availability on your carrier.
Choose based on broadband expectations
If you expect calls, video, streaming or normal app data, AST’s stated objective is closer to that requirement. However, the cited AST pages describe intended capabilities and rollout expectations rather than a guaranteed live service in every market. Demand a carrier confirmation that the feature is operational where you travel.
Choose based on travel geography
Neither provider’s cited material establishes a single worldwide consumer footprint. A service can be available in one operator’s territory and absent in the next country. Verify each country, roaming rule and partner carrier before relying on it for work, navigation or safety.

Choose based on continuity
AST’s early U.S. beta target is explicitly non-continuous, while its 45–60 and approximately 90 satellite figures are future coverage expectations. Starlink’s dated launch document does not establish continuous data or voice service. Ask whether the operator promises continuous coverage, periodic satellite passes or best-effort access.

A practical eligibility checklist
Use this checklist with the carrier’s current support team or service page:
- Country and region: Is the exact location supported today?
- Operator: Is your mobile network a named participating partner?
- Phone: What exact model and operating-system version are approved?
- Plan: Is access included, optional, emergency-only or unavailable on prepaid and business accounts?
- Features: Which of messaging, voice, data, video, apps and IoT actually work?
- Continuity: Is access continuous or intermittent, and are there outdoor or sky-view conditions?
- Billing: What is the recurring price, one-time price, allowance and overage policy?
- Fallback: What happens automatically when a terrestrial tower is available again?
Save the carrier’s answer and date. Satellite partnerships and feature sets can change independently of your handset.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating a 2025 announcement as a 2026 service map
SpaceX’s February 2025 document is valuable for documenting the launch position at that time. It cannot by itself establish the current October 2026 footprint, phone list or feature set.
Mistake: treating AST’s design goals as a retail guarantee
Voice, video, streaming, apps and 4G/5G speeds are stated objectives. Satellite counts and beta plans describe expected rollout, not universal live access.
Mistake: comparing peak figures as typical speeds
AST’s 98.9 Mbps peak test and more-than-150-Mbps-per-cell capability claim are not average user measurements and do not create a fair comparison with Starlink.
Mistake: buying a “satellite phone” first
The cited services are described as carrier services for ordinary phones. No specific handset or accessory is identified as a guaranteed unlock. Confirm operator support before spending money.
Mistake: assuming regulatory approval equals consumer availability
The FCC order explains U.S. supplemental-coverage authorization context, but it is not a live service locator. Commercial activation, plan eligibility and local coverage still require carrier confirmation.
What the partnerships mean for terrestrial service
AST describes seamless switching between cell towers and satellites through mobile operators. In practical terms, satellite access is an extension of the carrier relationship, not an independent network you select manually. SpaceX similarly describes partner operators supplying terrestrial networks and LTE spectrum. Your operator therefore controls authentication, plan eligibility and the transition rules when a tower is reachable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA carrier may prioritize terrestrial service, restrict satellite use to dead zones or limit which applications can use the satellite link. Ask for those rules instead of assuming that a phone will maintain the same performance everywhere.
Corporate claims and how to read them
In an AST SpaceMobile announcement dated October 8, 2025, Verizon Senior Vice President Srini Kalapala said: “By integrating our expansive, reliable, robust terrestrial network with this innovative space-based technology, we are paving the way for a future where everything and everyone can be connected, regardless of geography.” The statement is explicitly future-oriented corporate language. It expresses an aspiration, not proof of universal existing coverage. The announcement is available at Nasdaq.
Bottom line: which one is better?
There is no evidence-supported universal winner. AST SpaceMobile presents the broader long-term broadband ambition—calls, video, streaming, apps and downloads on ordinary phones—but its cited coverage numbers and U.S. beta are expectations that require local verification. Starlink Direct to Cell had a clearly documented commercial messaging launch with named operators in February 2025, while data and voice were still described as future work in that announcement; its current 2026 feature set must be checked with the participating carrier.
For a buying decision, start with your carrier rather than the satellite brand: confirm country, operator, exact phone, plan, live features, continuity and price. That check is more reliable than satellite counts, peak-speed claims or a general promise that an everyday smartphone will work.
