Piper Sandler reportedly cut its AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) price target from $98 to $54 and downgraded the stock from Overweight to Neutral on October 13, 2026. The $44 reduction is about 45%, close to half. The analyst move reflects concern about AST’s launch pace in 2026–27 and SpaceX’s direct-to-cell ambitions—not proof that SpaceX caused a particular change in ASTS’s share price.
What changed in the ASTS price target?
Investing.com reported on October 13, 2026, in a Reuters-credited story generated with AI support and reviewed by an editor, that Piper Sandler lowered its AST SpaceMobile target from $98 to $54 and changed its rating from Overweight to Neutral. The reduction is $44, or approximately 45% of the previous target.
This is a reported view from one analyst firm, not a guaranteed future share price or a consensus estimate. The original Piper Sandler research note was not verified, so the details should be attributed to the Investing.com report rather than treated as independently confirmed Piper research. The report ties the move to less confidence in the pace of satellite launches during 2026–27 and to SpaceX’s growing direct-to-cell ambitions. Those concerns matter because AST needs to deploy satellites and establish commercial service, while SpaceX may compete for launch capacity, mobile-network-operator relationships, or customers through its own direct-to-cell plans.

These are potential mechanisms for competitive pressure, not established outcomes. The report also notes a countervailing possibility: SpaceX’s activity could increase mobile operators’ interest in AST as a partner. Whether that happens depends on deployment, agreements, service performance, and commercial terms. The phrase “SpaceX curse” is a headline framing, not a proven causal explanation for ASTS trading.

| Measure | Company-reported figure | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Spacecraft in orbit | 13, reported in the Q2 2026 update | Shows deployment progress; it does not establish a complete network or broad commercial availability. |
| Mobile-network-operator relationships | More than 60 partners, with coverage representing over 3 billion subscribers, reported in Q2 2026 | Partner reach is not the same as paying users, active service, or a completed service footprint. |
| Q2 2026 revenue | $31.5 million | Revenue for the quarter, not evidence that the company has met its full-year guidance. |
| FY2026 revenue guidance | $150 million–$200 million | Company guidance, not realized revenue. |
| Aggregate contracted-revenue backlog | Approximately $1.30 billion, reported in Q2 2026 | A reported backlog does not by itself establish when or how much revenue will be recognized. |
| Pro forma cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash | More than $3.7 billion as of June 30, 2026 | A dated liquidity figure; it does not remove execution, spending, or valuation risk. |
The company also reported that an in-orbit Block 1 BlueBird satellite demonstrated a peak data speed of 98.9 Mbps in Q1 2026. That is a company-reported demonstration, not an independent benchmark of service customers can expect in routine use. AST SpaceMobile Q1 2026 results

| Question | Bullish interpretation | Bearish interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Can AST deploy its network? | AST has said it uses multiple launch providers and has a growing production pipeline. | Piper’s reported concern is lower confidence in launch pace across 2026–27; manufacturing and launch execution remain necessary. |
| Do partner numbers mean service is ready? | More than 60 MNO partners and beta preparations suggest commercial interest. | Partner counts and subscriber coverage do not prove widespread availability, paid usage, or adoption; regulatory and integration work still matters. |
| Can AST fund and monetize deployment? | Q2 revenue, a reported backlog, and pro forma cash provide evidence of commercial progress and financial resources. | Guidance and backlog are not realized revenue, and the company reported significant operating costs while its network buildout continues. |
| How material is SpaceX competition? | SpaceX’s activity could prompt MNOs to consider AST as a partner. | Competition could affect launch access, pricing, or device strategy, but the report does not establish that any of those effects have occurred. |
What remains uncertain
AST’s progress depends on more than demand or announced partnerships. Launches, manufacturing, regulatory approvals, final commercial agreements, service adoption, pricing, liquidity, and competition can all affect whether plans turn into operating revenue. AST’s SEC-filed Q2 2026 materials caution: “AST SpaceMobile cautions readers not to place undue reliance upon any forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date made.” AST SpaceMobile SEC filings

In May 2026, CEO Abel Avellan said the company was targeting approximately 45 satellites in orbit for 2026, supported by its manufacturing cadence and multi-partner launch strategy. That was a forward-looking company target; AST’s later Q2 update reported 13 spacecraft in orbit and preparations for beta service with selected strategic partners. The target should not be mistaken for an achieved deployment count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did SpaceX cause ASTS stock to fall?
The October 13 report establishes that Piper Sandler’s reported downgrade cited SpaceX’s direct-to-cell ambitions alongside concerns about AST’s launch pace. It does not establish that SpaceX caused a specific ASTS share-price move. Nor does the reported $54 target provide a current market quote. Readers assessing the stock should separate the analyst’s reported rationale from any claim about what drove trading on a given day.
