AST SpaceMobile’s closest direct-to-device comparisons are Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk. They aim to connect ordinary mobile phones from satellites, but their spectrum, carrier partnerships, service stages and coverage differ. Globalstar is an important satellite-connectivity alternative with a traditional mobile-satellite-service model; its planned combination with Amazon Leo could make it a future direct-to-device competitor. Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat belong in the wider satellite-connectivity discussion, but should not automatically be treated as equivalent phone services.

What “satellite-to-cell” means

Satellite-to-cell is an umbrella term, not one uniform product. In the narrowest and most useful sense for this comparison, it means a satellite communicating directly with a normal cellular handset, usually through a mobile-network operator’s spectrum and core-network integration. The phone may need no special antenna or satellite accessory, although the services available can initially be limited to emergency messaging, text, location sharing or low-rate data.

Other satellite services use dedicated satellite spectrum, a special handset, a personal communicator or a fixed terminal. Those products can be excellent alternatives for remote connectivity without being technical substitutes for an unmodified smartphone service. Comparing them as if they were identical produces misleading conclusions about coverage, speed and device compatibility.

Direct-to-device services

AST SpaceMobile, Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk are the clearest direct-to-device comparisons. Their public descriptions focus on reaching ordinary phones through satellites and mobile-operator relationships. Each provider still has to be assessed by the exact country, carrier, handset generation, service type and launch status involved.

Traditional mobile-satellite service

Globalstar represents a different heritage. The International Telecommunication Union describes its established network as traditional mobile-satellite service using L- and S-band spectrum. A dedicated satellite device or a specialized service plan may be involved, rather than a standard phone connecting transparently through a terrestrial carrier.

Other non-terrestrial-network models

Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat participate in broader non-terrestrial-network and satellite-connectivity markets. Some target enterprise terminals, IoT equipment, backhaul or dedicated communicators. They become direct AST comparisons only where the offer matches the same question: can a specified ordinary phone, on a specified carrier and in a specified geography, use the satellite network for a comparable service?

AST SpaceMobile: the direct-to-device benchmark

How AST describes its architecture

AST SpaceMobile says its SpaceMobile network combines mobile-network-operator spectrum licensed by partners with spectrum it owns. Its public material describes next-generation satellites intended to connect ordinary smartphones and presents projected coverage and capacity. Those figures are company descriptions or targets, not independent measurements of the experience available to every customer.

The architecture is significant because it attempts to extend a carrier’s existing cellular service beyond terrestrial towers. In principle, a compatible phone can remain part of the operator ecosystem instead of requiring a separate satellite handset. In practice, service quality depends on spectrum rights, satellite visibility, handset radio support, carrier integration, regulatory permission and the number of satellites serving the area.

AST’s Verizon agreement

AST’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company signed a definitive commercial agreement with Verizon in October 2025 for direct-to-device service when needed by Verizon customers beginning in 2026. The filing establishes an agreement and a planned start period. It does not establish that every Verizon customer can purchase the service, that coverage is nationwide or international, or that the service is available at the time you read this. Check Verizon and AST announcements for the current commercial status.

What AST is and is not competing on

AST is most directly competing for carrier-backed satellite coverage that can reach normal phones. It is not automatically competing with every satellite operator on dedicated voice, maritime connectivity, aircraft broadband or enterprise backhaul. A claim about projected satellite capacity also should not be treated as a measured consumer data rate.

Starlink Direct to Cell

Regulatory position

The Federal Communications Commission’s order 24-136, dated December 18, 2024, records the SpaceX and T-Mobile Direct to Cell initiative and authorizes SpaceX to provide supplemental coverage from space in the United States. This is an important regulatory reference because it shows how a mobile operator and satellite operator can seek authority to extend terrestrial coverage from orbit.

FCC authorization is not the same as a universally purchasable plan. It does not by itself specify the current retail price, every supported handset, all service features or availability outside the authorized geography. For those details, consult the participating carrier’s current plan documentation and regulator notices.

Comparison with AST

Both systems are relevant when the question is “Can my ordinary phone connect through a satellite?” The practical differences are the carrier relationship in your country, the spectrum arrangement, the satellite deployment serving your location, and whether the current service supports only emergency or text functions or broader data. Peak or target performance claims should not be used as a substitute for a published plan and coverage map.

Lynk

Device and service claims

Lynk describes a cellular-based satellite network that can serve unmodified mobile devices. Its company page says it has contracts with operators serving more than 50 countries. That is a company-reported reach figure, not a guarantee that all those contracts have produced a live, retail service in every country.

The FCC’s order 24-28, dated March 14, 2024, discussed Lynk’s proposed system and then-current company statements about mobile-network-operator contracts and messaging plans. Because those statements describe a particular point in time, current service capability should be checked against Lynk’s and the relevant operator’s latest information.

Lynk and Omnispace

Lynk and Omnispace announced plans to merge on October 22, 2025. The announcement proves that the parties planned a transaction; it does not prove that the merger was completed. Until completion is independently confirmed, describe it as a planned merger rather than an operating combined company.

Is Globalstar a competitor to AST SpaceMobile?

It is a competitor in the broad satellite-connectivity market, but not a like-for-like direct-to-device competitor based solely on its established service. The ITU characterizes Globalstar’s model as traditional mobile-satellite service using L/S-band spectrum. That model differs from a system that reuses mobile-network spectrum to connect standard cellular phones.

Globalstar can be the better comparison when the reader needs a satellite phone or another dedicated satellite service. It should not be presented as proof that an ordinary smartphone can receive the same service AST is targeting.

Amazon’s planned acquisition and Leo ambitions

On April 14, 2026, Globalstar announced that Amazon would acquire it and said its satellites, spectrum and expertise would support future direct-to-device services in Amazon Leo. This creates a potentially important future competitor to AST and Starlink. The announcement alone does not establish that the acquisition has closed, that a Leo direct-to-device service has launched, or that a consumer can buy it on an ordinary phone. Verify transaction and launch status before relying on it for a coverage decision.

Where Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb and other systems fit

GSMA Intelligence’s Global Mobile Trends 2026 comparison includes a wider group of satellite and NTN operators, including Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat. Their relevance depends on the use case.

Skylo

Skylo is relevant to NTN and satellite-to-device discussions, but its device compatibility, carrier integration and service features must be evaluated for a specific implementation. Do not infer that a Skylo-enabled device offers the same ordinary-phone experience, coverage or data capability as AST.

Eutelsat/OneWeb

Eutelsat/OneWeb is commonly associated with broadband connectivity through user terminals and enterprise or backhaul applications. Unless a particular product is documented as connecting ordinary cellular phones directly, it is an adjacent satellite alternative rather than a direct AST equivalent.

Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat

These operators have long-standing satellite communications businesses, including dedicated devices, maritime, aviation, government and enterprise services. They can solve remote-connectivity problems that a phone-to-satellite service may not, but their conventional products should not be labeled direct AST competitors without matching device and service evidence.

Spectrum and network architecture: why the distinction matters

Architecture question Why it affects the user
Which spectrum is used? Mobile-operator spectrum, MSS spectrum and other NTN allocations have different licensing, coordination and device implications.
Does the satellite act like a cell site? A cellular payload can support ordinary phones, but handset radio bands, link budgets and network integration still constrain service.
Is a dedicated terminal required? A terminal can provide more antenna gain and capacity than a handheld phone, but it is not a transparent phone service.
Who controls the subscriber relationship? The satellite company, mobile operator or both may determine eligibility, billing, roaming and support.
What is the capacity model? A satellite may cover a large area while serving only a limited number of simultaneous users, especially for data-heavy traffic.

AST says it combines partner mobile spectrum with its own holdings. The ITU’s description of Globalstar’s L/S-band MSS model illustrates why two services can both be called satellite connectivity while using different regulatory and technical paths. Spectrum labels alone do not predict the customer experience; the complete radio, satellite, carrier and handset design matters.

Availability milestones you should not confuse

  1. Concept or target: a company describes a future constellation, coverage area, capacity or service objective.
  2. Test or demonstration: a connection works under controlled or limited conditions, but is not necessarily a retail product.
  3. Regulatory authorization: a regulator permits a particular operation in a defined jurisdiction and under stated conditions.
  4. Announced partnership: an operator and satellite provider announce cooperation or a contract.
  5. Commercial launch: a service is offered in a defined market with stated eligibility and terms.
  6. Purchasable coverage: your carrier, handset, plan and location are all eligible at the time you need the service.

The distinction matters because a country-level permission does not create universal international availability, and an operator partnership does not prove active coverage. Satellite visibility, local licensing, carrier integration, handset support and network capacity can each narrow the practical service area.

How to compare AST alternatives for your own use

1. Define the service you actually need

  • Emergency SOS or basic safety messaging
  • Two-way text and location sharing
  • Voice calls
  • Low-rate data for messaging or telemetry
  • General internet or broadband data

A service that handles emergency messages is not automatically suitable for voice or broadband. Confirm the exact supported functions rather than relying on the phrase “satellite-to-cell.”

2. Confirm the phone requirement

Check whether the offer supports an unmodified ordinary phone, a particular handset generation, a special radio band, a dedicated satellite communicator or a full satellite terminal. “No hardware changes” does not mean every phone is compatible; modem, band, software and carrier provisioning requirements can still apply.

3. Verify the carrier and country

Look for your country, mobile operator and plan—not merely the satellite company’s global map. A U.S. FCC authorization is evidence of U.S. regulatory authority for the specified operation, not a promise of service in Europe, Asia, Africa or elsewhere. Lynk’s statement about operators serving more than 50 countries likewise requires market-by-market confirmation.

4. Check the launch stage

Separate announced, planned, authorized, tested and launched. For a service you need now, require a current retail offer, supported-device list and coverage explanation. Treat a future constellation or planned acquisition as an option to monitor, not as present backup communications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Ask how capacity is managed

Satellite coverage can extend over a very large footprint while available capacity remains limited. Ask whether the provider publishes restrictions for congestion, outdoor visibility, message latency, data rates or simultaneous users. A projected peak rate is not a guaranteed rate for an ordinary customer.

Answers to the most common competitor questions

Who are AST SpaceMobile’s main competitors?

For direct ordinary-phone satellite connectivity, Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk are the closest comparisons. Globalstar is a major satellite-connectivity alternative with a different MSS heritage, and its planned integration with Amazon Leo could create a future direct-to-device rival. Other operators are adjacent unless their specific product matches AST’s phone, carrier and service model.

Is AST SpaceMobile the same as Starlink Direct to Cell?

No. Both target cellular devices from satellites, but they use different corporate networks, carrier relationships, spectrum arrangements, satellite deployments and commercial rollouts. The relevant comparison is the plan available to your handset and carrier in your location, not a generic claim that both use satellites.

Is Lynk available everywhere its partners operate?

Not necessarily. Lynk says its contracts serve operators in more than 50 countries, while the FCC material describes proposals and statements from 2024. A contract or announcement can precede testing, regulatory approval or retail launch. Confirm the specific country, operator, device and service feature.

Will Amazon Leo and Globalstar replace AST?

That cannot be concluded from the April 2026 acquisition announcement. Amazon described future direct-to-device ambitions using Globalstar assets, but the transaction’s completion, constellation plans, handset compatibility and commercial launch must be verified before treating it as an operating replacement or competitor.

Bottom line for readers

Use “competitor” narrowly when you mean an ordinary phone connecting through a satellite: Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk are the clearest current comparisons to AST SpaceMobile. Use “alternative” more broadly for Globalstar, dedicated satellite services and NTN providers that solve remote-connectivity problems through different devices or architectures. Before choosing any service, verify the country, carrier, handset, supported feature, regulatory status and whether the offer is actually purchasable now.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
