There is no authoritative, universal RAM or CPU requirement for an Assetto Corsa dedicated server. Steam’s published figures—2 GB RAM minimum and 6 GB recommended—apply to the player game client, not to a server process. Server capacity depends on the number of players, concurrent server instances, custom cars and tracks, whether the computer also runs the game, and the host’s available upload capacity.

AssettoServer documents Windows and Linux installation, while managed hosts publish their own resource allocations. Treat those allocations as plan specifications rather than proof of a game-wide minimum. The practical way to size a server is to match the machine or plan to your workload, then observe CPU, memory and network behavior under the intended configuration.

Client requirements are not dedicated-server requirements

Assetto Corsa has two different workloads. The game client renders graphics, loads the driving simulation and handles a player’s local input. A dedicated server coordinates sessions, distributes state to connected players and loads the configured content, but it does not render the race for a local player. Because the jobs differ, the client’s published memory figures cannot be reused as server sizing guidance.

Figure or specification What it describes How to use it
2 GB RAM minimum Steam’s minimum memory requirement for the Assetto Corsa game client Useful only when checking whether a computer can run the player game; not a dedicated-server baseline
6 GB RAM recommended Steam’s recommended memory for the game client Not a tested or official recommendation for a server process
AssettoServer on Windows or Linux Installation paths documented for a custom Assetto Corsa server implementation Choose the operating system you can maintain and configure reliably
TCP+UDP 9600 and TCP 8081 Default port-forwarding values in AssettoServer’s beginner guide Open the values used by your actual configuration, including required firewall exceptions

No authoritative specification establishes a particular CPU model, RAM amount or upload speed for a given player count, mod set or number of simultaneous servers. Any article that presents a single figure as the minimum for every Assetto Corsa server is making a broader claim than the available evidence supports.

How much RAM does an Assetto Corsa server need?

What is established

There is no official RAM threshold for an Assetto Corsa dedicated server. The 2 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended figures published by Steam are client requirements. They should not be presented as “2 GB for a server” or “6 GB for a server.”

What changes memory use

Memory demand is workload-specific. The factors worth accounting for are:

  • Connected players: A busier session generally maintains more live state than an empty or lightly populated one.
  • Concurrent instances: Running two or more servers on one machine consumes memory for each process and its loaded content.
  • Custom content: Modded cars, tracks and other assets can increase the amount of data a process and the operating system keep available.
  • Other services: A host that also runs the game client, voice software, monitoring, backups or a desktop environment needs memory for those tasks too.
  • Operating-system overhead: Windows or Linux and background services require headroom before the server process starts.

Because the available documentation does not quantify these effects, there is no defensible player-count-to-RAM table. Start with a plan or machine that leaves room for the operating system and your actual content, then watch memory use during a representative session. If the system begins paging, swapping or terminating processes, reduce competing workloads or move to a larger allocation.

A hosted plan is an example, not a rule

One published hosted-server offer describes four slots, 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM and 2 GB of asset storage. Those numbers describe that provider’s plan at the time it was documented. They do not establish that 2 GB is sufficient for every four-player server, that 1 vCPU is a universal minimum, or that the plan supports every mod and configuration. Check the host’s current slot limits, storage policy, location, content support and terms before relying on it.

What CPU does an Assetto Corsa server need?

No universal processor specification is published

The available documentation does not provide a required processor generation, clock speed, core count or benchmark score for Assetto Corsa dedicated servers. It also does not publish CPU thresholds by player count, mod load or concurrent instance count.

Variables that affect processor demand

  • Simulation workload: More connected cars and more active session state can increase processing work.
  • Multiple servers: Each additional instance competes for processor time.
  • Co-hosting: Running the game client on the same computer adds a graphics and simulation workload that can contend with the server.
  • Background activity: Updates, file compression, recording and other applications can create short CPU spikes or sustained contention.

For a self-hosted machine, prioritize a processor that can maintain stable utilization while the server and the host’s normal tasks run together. Do not choose solely by the number of cores or by a nominal frequency; neither measure, on its own, is an Assetto Corsa server guarantee. For a managed plan, compare the provider’s stated vCPU allocation and upgrade options, but treat the allocation as a product specification rather than a game-wide requirement.

Bandwidth, ports and reachability

Upload capacity is a real constraint, but no threshold is established

A server must send session updates to every connected player. The sources available for this topic do not publish a tested upload-bandwidth requirement by player count, car count or mod configuration. Your decision therefore has to account for the quality and consistency of the host connection rather than rely on an invented number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider whether the connection has enough sustained upstream capacity for the planned session, whether other users consume that upstream link, and whether latency remains stable when the connection is busy. A server that has adequate CPU and RAM can still be difficult to join or can drop players if the network path is unreliable.

Default AssettoServer ports

AssettoServer’s beginner guide lists TCP+UDP port 9600 and TCP port 8081 as default values for forwarding. The actual ports must match your server configuration. A firewall exception may be required on the host, and a router rule may be required when the machine sits behind a home gateway. Opening a different port from the one configured in the server will not make the service reachable.

Self-hosting on Windows or Linux

AssettoServer’s documentation covers installation on both Windows and Linux. The exact commands and package steps depend on the current release, so use its current installation instructions for the operating system you select. The following workflow captures the decisions and checks that matter regardless of platform.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
  1. Choose the host machine. Decide whether it will run only the server or also the game client and other services. Note the expected player count, number of simultaneous instances and custom content before selecting hardware.
  2. Install the server implementation. Follow AssettoServer’s Windows or Linux installation path and keep the server files in a location with sufficient storage for the base installation and custom assets.
  3. Configure the session. Set the server’s cars, tracks, slots and network values in the configuration files supplied by the implementation. Confirm that the port values you record are the ones the process will actually bind to.
  4. Allow local traffic. Create the required host-firewall exceptions for the configured ports. Apply both protocol types where the configuration requires them; the beginner guide’s defaults include both TCP and UDP for 9600 and TCP for 8081.
  5. Forward the ports when necessary. On a home network, create router forwarding rules from the public-facing interface to the host machine’s local address. If the network topology changes, recheck that the rule still points to the correct machine.
  6. Start and test locally. Launch the process, confirm that it remains running, and test the configured session from the same network before inviting outside players.
  7. Test from an external connection. Have a player join from outside the host network. This verifies that the router, firewall and actual server configuration agree.
  8. Observe the workload. Watch memory, CPU, disk activity and network behavior while players connect and custom content loads. Use those observations to decide whether to reduce competing services or move to a larger machine or plan.

Linux-specific community guidance

A community Linux guide describes using SteamCMD to obtain server files and editing server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini. Such instructions can be a useful example of the file-based setup, but community directions can become outdated. Check each command, path and option against the current server documentation before applying it, especially after an AssettoServer or game update.

Managed hosting versus running your own machine

Managed hosting removes the need to keep the server process and operating system running on your personal computer. Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and network configuration, but you are responsible for maintenance and reachability.

Decision area Self-hosting Managed hosting
Server process and operating system You install, update, monitor and troubleshoot them The provider operates the platform; the exact management scope varies by plan
Router and firewall Usually your responsibility when the host is behind a home router Usually handled in the provider’s infrastructure, subject to its network policy
Configuration and files Direct access to server files and custom content Access depends on the control panel, file tools and plan restrictions
Resources Limited by your machine and internet connection Limited by the selected plan’s stated slots, vCPU, RAM and storage
Maintenance effort You handle updates, backups, permissions and failures The provider handles infrastructure tasks, while you still manage your server configuration and content
Performance certainty Depends on your measured workload and connection Depends on the provider’s allocation, location, contention policy and current terms

Choose self-hosting when you want control over the operating system, files and network and are comfortable maintaining them. Choose a managed service when avoiding router configuration and machine maintenance is more important than having unrestricted access. Ask a provider whether its plan supports your required custom content, how asset storage is counted, where the server is located and what happens when you exceed the advertised slots or resources.

If you decide on a managed plan, Godlike.Host’s Assetto Corsa server hosting lets you upgrade or downgrade from its game panel with prorated billing and upload custom content over SFTP/FTP, so you can resize as your player count grows; see the current plans for what is included.

  • Players: Define the largest session you actually intend to run, not only the number of friends in a typical race.
  • Instances: Count every server process that may run at the same time.
  • Content: List the cars, tracks and other custom assets that must be stored and loaded.
  • Co-hosted applications: Decide whether the machine will also run the game, a desktop, backups, monitoring or other services.
  • Network: Check the stability and available upload capacity of the host connection, and identify who controls the router and firewall.
  • Administration: Decide whether you can apply updates, recover a failed process and troubleshoot ports, or whether a managed platform is preferable.
  • Growth: Leave an upgrade path for more slots, another instance or a larger mod library instead of selecting a plan that is already at its stated limits.

After setup, validate the decision with the real workload: fill the intended slots, load the heaviest content you plan to use and observe the host during a complete session. If CPU, memory or network behavior becomes unstable, change one variable at a time—reduce competing services, remove unnecessary instances or upgrade the allocation—so you can identify the actual constraint.

Troubleshooting common hosting failures

The server process runs, but nobody can join

Confirm that the configured port values match the router-forwarding and host-firewall rules. AssettoServer’s documented defaults are TCP+UDP 9600 and TCP 8081, but a custom configuration may use different values. Test from outside the host network; a local test alone cannot prove that internet routing is correct.

Players see disconnects or an unstable session

Check upstream saturation and latency while the session is active. Pause competing uploads, verify that the host is not swapping or heavily CPU-constrained, and compare behavior with fewer players or less demanding content. The available evidence does not support a single bandwidth or CPU number that guarantees stability, so the failing workload must be isolated.

Starting a modded session fails

Verify that the required files exist on the server, that the configuration names match the installed content and that the server implementation supports the intended setup. Check storage usage as well as RAM: a plan can have enough memory for a process yet insufficient asset storage for a growing mod library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The host becomes unresponsive

Stop nonessential applications, check whether multiple instances are competing for CPU or memory, and review operating-system logs. If the problem returns under the intended load, move to a machine or managed plan with more headroom rather than treating the client’s 2 GB or 6 GB figures as server targets.

Is a mini PC suitable for self-hosting?

A mini PC or other always-on computer can be a practical form factor for a home server, provided it has reliable cooling, storage for the server and custom assets, a stable network connection and enough headroom for the workload you define. The available evidence does not validate a particular model, processor or RAM configuration, so selecting a product requires checking its specifications against your expected players, instances and co-hosted applications. A model recommendation would need product-specific testing that is outside the established requirements.

Bottom line

Assetto Corsa has no published universal dedicated-server CPU, RAM or upload requirement. Steam’s 2 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended memory figures are for the game client only. Size a self-hosted machine or managed plan around players, concurrent instances, custom content, co-hosted workloads and network conditions; use AssettoServer’s Windows or Linux documentation for installation; and make the configured ports reachable through the firewall and router. The only reliable final check is a representative session measured on the actual setup.
