If your Assetto Corsa server appears under LAN but not in the public server list, the game itself is usually running. The failure is more often public-lobby registration, router forwarding, or a host-firewall rule. If it does not appear even on the local network, start with the server process and its configuration instead.
For the default self-hosted setup, forward TCP and UDP port 9600 and TCP port 8081 to the computer running the server. Allow the server executable through the host firewall, start the preset or dedicated server, watch the console for registration errors, wait briefly, and refresh the list. A server that is visible but cannot be joined needs a different set of checks: matching car and track files, CSP requirements, free entry slots, password, ping, and authentication.

Assetto Corsa uses more than one discovery path. A server can be running correctly on your home network while failing to register with the public Kunos lobby. Treat the list in which the server is missing as the first diagnostic clue.
Visible in LAN, missing from Online
LAN visibility proves that the server process is active and that local discovery can reach it. It does not prove that players outside your network can reach the required ports or that the server successfully registered with the public lobby. Concentrate on port forwarding, the host firewall, and public-registration settings.

Missing from both LAN and Online
Confirm that the preset or dedicated server actually started. A failed launch, an incorrect server folder, or an early configuration error can prevent the process from advertising anywhere. Read the console while launching rather than relying only on what Content Manager displays.
Listed, but unavailable or impossible to join
Registration has worked in this case. The remaining problem is usually reachability, a file mismatch, a client-version requirement, a full entry list, or an access setting such as a password or authentication rule.

Use this order before changing settings
Changing several variables at once makes the eventual error harder to interpret. Work through the following sequence and retest after each relevant change.
- Identify the scope of the failure. In Content Manager, open Drive → Online → LAN. Note whether the server appears locally, appears only after a delay, or is absent entirely.
- Confirm the server process. Launch the preset in Content Manager or run the dedicated server folder. Keep the console visible while it starts and while another player searches.
- Read the registration message. Look for lobby-registration errors instead of assuming that a missing list entry is a car or track problem.
- Check the destination computer. Router rules must point to the current local IP address of the actual host PC, not to another computer on the network.
- Check every required protocol. A rule for only TCP or only UDP is incomplete for the default setup.
- Permit the executable in the host firewall. Router forwarding cannot help if Windows Firewall or another host firewall drops the incoming traffic.
- Restart after network or registration changes. Then wait a few moments and refresh the LAN or Online list.
Step 1: Start the server and verify that it stays running
Starting through Content Manager
Use the saved server preset in Content Manager. After starting it, leave the server window or console open. A process that opens and immediately exits is not a public-list problem yet; resolve the launch or configuration error shown in the console first.
Once the process remains active, open Drive → Online → LAN. The server may take a few moments to appear. Use the list’s refresh action instead of assuming that the first view is current.
Starting from a dedicated folder
AssettoServer documentation also supports running the server from a dedicated folder rather than inside Content Manager. Start the server executable from that folder and monitor the same console output. The launch method changes, but the discovery and port checks do not: the host still needs the required ports open and forwarded.

A server that remains running and appears in LAN gives you a useful baseline. Test locally before asking an outside player to join. If LAN never shows it, stay on the process, configuration, and local-firewall branch; public registration cannot be diagnosed reliably until the server is functioning on the host network.

Step 2: Read the console and log while testing
The console is the fastest way to select the right troubleshooting branch. Watch it during startup and again when another player searches or attempts to connect. Do not close it immediately after launching; registration and connection errors can appear after the initial startup messages.
“Error during Kunos lobby registation: ERROR, INVALID SERVER, CHECK YOUR PORT FORWARDING SETTINGS”
This is the documented registration error, including the spelling shown by the server. Treat it as a forwarding or firewall branch. It does not prove that every other part of the server configuration is correct, so continue checking the process, ports, and access settings after addressing reachability.
Interpreting the absence of an error
No visible registration error is not the same as successful registration. If the server is present on LAN but absent from Online, verify that public registration is enabled in the server configuration, restart the server after changing it, and refresh the public list. Keep the console open so a subsequent registration attempt can be observed.
Use one controlled retest
After changing a router rule or firewall permission, restart the server and perform one fresh search. Record whether the server moves from absent to visible, or from visible to listed-but-unjoinable. That distinction prevents you from applying checksum or CSP fixes to a server that is still unreachable.
Step 3: Forward the complete default port set
For the default setup, create router forwarding rules from the internet-facing connection to the local computer running the server. The rules must target the host PC’s current local IP address.

Some router interfaces let you select “TCP/UDP” in one rule; others require separate entries. Either approach is acceptable if both protocols for 9600 and TCP for 8081 are actually forwarded. A rule that covers only 9600/TCP, for example, leaves the default setup incomplete.

Point the rule at the right machine
Verify the host PC’s current local IP before saving the rule. If the address changed since the rule was created, the router may be forwarding correctly to a computer that is no longer running the server. Also check that a second server or another application is not already using the same ports.
Match server-manager settings
Server-manager configuration exposes UDP_PORT, TCP_PORT, and HTTP_PORT as separate values. If you changed any of these from their defaults, open the corresponding configured ports on the server firewall and make the router rules match those values. Do not assume that opening 9600 and 8081 is sufficient after customizing the port assignments.
Restart after changing forwarding
Save the router configuration, restart the server, and wait briefly before refreshing the list. Registration can remain failed until a new server startup performs another lobby-registration attempt.
Step 4: Allow the server through the host firewall
Port forwarding only delivers traffic to the host computer. Windows Firewall or another host firewall can still block the server executable. Create or enable an allow rule for the server program and ensure that the rule covers the network profile being used.
Check the executable, not just the router
When the firewall prompts for access, allow the dedicated server executable. If you previously denied the prompt, open the firewall’s allowed-app list and change the decision rather than waiting for a new prompt that may never appear.
Open the configured ports on the server firewall
The server-manager settings treat UDP, TCP, and HTTP ports separately. The host firewall therefore needs to permit the configured UDP port, TCP port, and HTTP port. With defaults, that means UDP 9600, TCP 9600, and TCP 8081. If you use non-default values, substitute those values in the firewall rules.
Retest with the console visible
Restart the server after changing firewall permissions. If the lobby-registration error disappears but the server remains absent, move to the public-registration setting and list-refresh checks instead of repeatedly editing the same firewall rule.

Step 5: Confirm public registration and refresh the lists
A LAN-visible server still needs to be configured to register publicly. Inspect the server preset or configuration for its public-registration option. The exact setting name depends on the server setup, so use the option that controls registration with the public lobby rather than changing unrelated session settings.

- Confirm that public registration is enabled.
- Confirm that the forwarded ports and host-firewall rules match the active configuration.
- Start the server again.
- Wait a few moments for registration.
- Refresh the LAN or Online list in Content Manager.
Do not interpret a stale list as a failed registration. Content Manager can take a short time to display a newly started server, and a manual refresh may be necessary. If the server remains on LAN only after a clean restart, return to the console and check for another registration error.
When the server is listed but cannot be joined
Once the server appears publicly, stop changing router rules unless the connection itself times out. Select the symptom below and check only the settings relevant to it.

Timeout or “server unavailable”
This symptom points back to network reachability. Confirm that TCP and UDP 9600 and TCP 8081 are forwarded to the current host PC, that no other process has taken the ports, and that the server executable is allowed through the host firewall. A server can remain visible in a list while its actual connection path is still blocked.

A checksum failure means the joining player’s car or track files differ from the server’s files. Reinstall or replace the mismatched content so both sides use identical files. Port forwarding will not correct a checksum mismatch.
CSP version requirement
If the server advertises a minimum Custom Shaders Patch version, the client must meet that requirement before joining. This is a client compatibility check, not evidence that the lobby registration failed.
No free slots
“No free slots” refers to the entry list for the selected car. Another driver may be using all available entries even though the server itself is online. Select a car with an open slot or ask the server operator to adjust the entry list.

Password, ping, and authentication
A wrong password can reject a driver after the server is found. Ping problems can make a reachable server unusable, while authentication settings can reject a client that does not satisfy the server’s configured requirement. Check these after confirming that the player is reaching the server at all.
Common configurations and what each one proves

Self-hosting choices: what changes and what does not
Content Manager and a dedicated server folder are two ways to run the server process. Neither removes the need to align the configured ports, router forwarding, and host-firewall permissions when the server is intended for public play.
Content Manager
This is the convenient choice when you already manage presets and online sessions there. Use the LAN list as the first confirmation, keep the launch console available, and refresh after the startup delay.
Dedicated folder
A dedicated folder is useful when you want the server process separated from the game launcher. It gives you a direct console to inspect, but the same registration message, port requirements, and firewall checks still apply.
Home router versus managed hosting
Self-hosting at home requires control of the router and the computer’s firewall, because incoming traffic must be forwarded to the server PC. If you cannot configure those network controls, managed game hosting is an alternative operational model; this guide’s home-router rules apply to the self-hosted case. Whichever model you choose, the practical diagnostic split remains the same: local discovery, public registration, and join-time compatibility.

Fixes for the most common “invalid server” paths
“Invalid server, check your port forwarding settings”
Start with the exact port set: TCP 9600, UDP 9600, and TCP 8081 for default values. Confirm that each rule points to the current host IP, that the server firewall allows the executable and configured ports, and that no second server is occupying them. Restart and watch for a new registration attempt.
Server appears only after repeated refreshes
Allow a short startup interval before judging the result. Start the server, wait, and refresh the relevant list. If it is still absent, use the console to determine whether registration failed or whether the client view is stale.
LAN works, public list remains empty
This combination narrows the problem to public registration or external reachability. Confirm public registration is enabled, apply the complete forwarding and firewall rules, restart, and refresh Online. Do not spend time replacing car files until the server is publicly listed.
Public listing works, but every join attempt times out
Return to the forwarding destination and firewall. A visible listing does not guarantee that the connection path for the gameplay ports is usable. Check both protocols on 9600, TCP 8081, the host IP, and any custom port values exposed by the server-manager configuration.
A compact recovery checklist
- Server process remains running in Content Manager or the dedicated folder.
- LAN list checked under Drive → Online → LAN.
- Console watched during startup and a join attempt.
- Public registration enabled for a public server.
- TCP 9600 forwarded to the host PC.
- UDP 9600 forwarded to the host PC.
- TCP 8081 forwarded to the host PC.
- Router rules target the host’s current local IP.
- No second server is using the same ports.
- Server executable and configured ports allowed through the host firewall.
- Server restarted after network or registration changes.
- List refreshed after the startup delay.
- For join failures: matching car and track files, required CSP version, available entry slot, correct password, acceptable ping, and compatible authentication settings.
When to stop changing network settings
Stop troubleshooting registration once the server is listed and a player reaches the server’s join-time error. A checksum kick, CSP requirement, no-free-slots message, password rejection, ping problem, or authentication failure belongs to the corresponding compatibility or access branch. Keeping the problem in the correct branch is the fastest way to get from “not showing up” to a successful connection.
