server_cfg.ini is the rulebook for an Assetto Corsa dedicated server. It selects the track and layout, limits and permits cars, sets the player cap, defines practice/qualifying/race sessions, controls weather and dynamic grip, and applies driving rules. The starting grid is configured separately in entry_list.ini; every car model named there must also be included in the CARS whitelist in server_cfg.ini.
What server_cfg.ini controls
A dedicated server reads server_cfg.ini when it starts and uses the values to build the multiplayer event. The file is divided into a [SERVER] section, session sections such as [PRACTICE], [QUALIFY] and [RACE], plus [DYNAMIC_TRACK] and one or more weather blocks such as [WEATHER_0]. A syntax error, an incorrect track name or a mismatch with entry_list.ini can prevent the event from starting or leave drivers unable to join.

The file does not define the grid itself. Grid rows, driver names, GUIDs and the selected car for each slot belong in entry_list.ini. Treat the two files as a pair: MAX_CLIENTS sets the upper limit, entry_list.ini must provide enough slots, and each slot’s MODEL must occur in CARS.
Before you edit the configuration
- Stop the dedicated server. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten on shutdown or ignored until the next restart. Make a copy of the working file so you can restore it.
- Confirm which server build is running. The Kunos sample and older community guides do not always agree on defaults or key names. Current builds, Content Manager extensions, Custom Shaders Patch and AssettoServer-based setups can add or alter behavior.
- Use plain INI syntax. Keep section headers in square brackets, use one
KEY=VALUEper line, and do not copy a stray trailing semicolon from an old sample afterCONFIG_TRACK. Preserve semicolons inside theCARSlist because they separate car models. - Restart and read the server log. A successful restart should show the selected track, sessions and listening ports. If the process exits, the first error in the log is usually more useful than later connection errors.
The [SERVER] section: identity, access and content
Identity and joining permissions

Values are generally written as numbers where the setting is a switch. Do not assume that a blank password, a disabled lobby registration and a locked entry list are interchangeable: they control different parts of the joining process.

Track, layout and car whitelist

Track and layout names are not free-form labels. Inspect the installed track directory and copy the folder names exactly. For a layout, the value is the subfolder name rather than the full path. An empty CONFIG_TRACK= is appropriate for a track with no layouts; do not invent a layout value simply because another track uses one.
The whitelist is evaluated against the car model identifier, not the name shown in a launcher. If entry_list.ini contains a slot such as MODEL=ks_mazda_mx5_cup, that exact identifier must appear in CARS. A missing model can make a slot invalid or keep a driver from joining.

Player capacity and pit boxes
MAX_CLIENTS is the server’s player cap. The official sample uses 15 in its example block; some community guides describe 24 as a common value, particularly because many Kunos tracks have about 24 pit boxes. The sample value is not a universal default, and a guide’s 24 is not a guarantee that every track supports 24 drivers.
The safe rule is that MAX_CLIENTS must be no greater than the selected track’s available pit count, and entry_list.ini must contain at least that many slots. If you set a cap above the pit capacity, the server may reject the configuration or leave excess slots unusable. If you provide fewer entry-list rows than the cap, the advertised capacity and actual grid disagree.

Ports and network reachability
The commonly shipped values are UDP and TCP game traffic on port 9600, with the HTTP service on port 8081. The official sample specifically shows UDP_PORT=9600; confirm the corresponding TCP and HTTP keys in the sample for your build before changing them.
- Allow the selected TCP and UDP game port through the host firewall.
- Forward the same game ports from the internet-facing router to the machine running the server when hosting behind NAT.
- Keep the HTTP port reachable only where the server’s web or status service requires it; it is not a substitute for the game ports.
- If another process already uses a port, choose an unused port and give drivers the new value. Every participant must connect to the same server address and configured game port.
A server that appears in a local list but cannot be joined from outside the network usually has a routing or firewall problem rather than a track-setting problem. Test locally first, then test from a separate network.

These controls are server-side policy, not a replacement for car-specific setup rules. Explain unusual values to drivers before a race: increased fuel or tyre rates, restricted assists and a nonstandard track-limit allowance can change the event more than the nominal lap count suggests.
Session blocks: practice, qualifying and race
Each session block has three core keys:
NAMEis the label displayed for that phase.TIMEis the session duration in minutes.IS_OPENdetermines when drivers may join:0means no joining,1allows free joining, and2allows joining until 20 seconds before the green signal.
Use the blocks that your event needs. A simple practice server may define only practice, while a league normally defines all three phases. Keep the section names exactly as expected by the server: [PRACTICE], [QUALIFY] and [RACE].

Practice and qualifying
Set a positive TIME for a timed practice or qualifying period. Choose IS_OPEN=1 when drivers should be able to connect at any point, or IS_OPEN=2 when you want a short lockout before the phase starts. With IS_OPEN=0, the phase is closed to new joins, which is appropriate when the server is being used as a controlled event rather than a drop-in session.
Race distance and grid release
In [RACE], LAPS creates a lap-counted race. A TIME value above zero makes the race timed instead. Do not configure both as if they were independent distances without checking the behavior of your build; decide whether the event should finish by laps or by time.
WAIT_TIME controls the wait on the grid before the green signal. Increase it when drivers need more time to load, select a setup or resolve a late connection. A very short wait can cause avoidable missed starts, while an unnecessarily long wait makes every rotation slower.

These values affect the progression from practice to qualifying and race. A low starting grip with a high lap gain produces a visibly evolving surface; a high session transfer means the race begins with much of the earlier rubber retained. Because exact ranges and defaults can vary by server build, compare your values with the current shipped sample rather than copying numbers from an unrelated guide.
Weather blocks and variation
Define weather as [WEATHER_0], [WEATHER_1] and subsequent numbered blocks. The server randomises among the weather blocks that are defined, so adding several blocks creates variation between sessions or restarts. If you need a predictable event, define only the weather block you intend to use and keep the rest out of the configuration.
Weather settings are build-dependent and are often extended by third-party server tools. Keep the block names and keys from the sample installed with your server; do not assume that a key accepted by a launcher or weather planner is accepted by the stock dedicated server.

- Choose a track folder and, if needed, a layout folder. Put those exact names in
TRACKandCONFIG_TRACK. - List every allowed car model in
CARS, separated by semicolons. - Create at least as many entry-list rows as the intended
MAX_CLIENTSvalue. - For each row, set a
MODELthat appears inCARS. If the list is locked, add the driver’s GUID to the row as required by your server format. - Check that the number of physical pit boxes supports the cap. Reduce
MAX_CLIENTSrather than trying to create more slots than the track provides.
This relationship explains many apparent “server_cfg.ini not working” reports: the main file can be syntactically valid while the car whitelist, entry-list model or pit capacity makes the requested grid impossible.

This is a structural example, not a universal drop-in file. Replace the car identifiers with models installed on the server, use a layout only when that folder exists, and obtain the supported dynamic-track and weather values from the sample shipped with your build. The official example uses the Vallelunga track, the extended_circuit layout, 15 players, SUN_ANGLE, RACE_OVER_TIME, ALLOWED_TYRES_OUT=-1 and UDP port 9600; it should be treated as a reference for key spelling, not proof that those values suit every event.
Troubleshooting server_cfg.ini problems
The server will not start
- Check that
TRACKmatches an actual folder beneathcontent/tracks. - Clear or correct
CONFIG_TRACKif the layout folder does not exist. - Remove a copied trailing semicolon after the layout value.
- Look for duplicate section headers, misspelled keys and malformed separators in the first error reported by the log.
- Restore the last known-good backup, then add one change at a time.
Drivers cannot join or a car is rejected
- Confirm that the driver has the exact car model named in the entry-list row.
- Confirm that the same model appears in the semicolon-separated
CARSvalue. - Check the password and
LOCKED_ENTRY_LIST. A locked list rejects GUIDs that are not authorized inentry_list.ini. - Compare
MAX_CLIENTSwith both the number of entry-list slots and the track’s pit count.
The server is visible but unreachable from outside
- Verify the TCP and UDP game ports and the HTTP port are not already in use.
- Allow the game ports through the host firewall and forward them to the server machine when behind a router.
- Have a driver test from a different network; a local loopback test cannot prove that internet routing is correct.
Sessions, grip or weather behave unexpectedly
- Check
IS_OPEN:0,1and2produce materially different join behavior. - In
[RACE], verify whether you intendedLAPSor a positive timed-raceTIME. - Review
SESSION_START,LAP_GAINandSESSION_TRANSFERtogether; changing only one can make the transition seem inconsistent. - Count the numbered weather blocks. The server randomises among defined blocks, so an unexpected forecast may simply come from another block.
Version and compatibility cautions
The well-known Kunos dedicated-server reference is an older forum FAQ, and the complete current manual was not available in the material used for this explanation. Third-party guides also contain conflicting names: CONFIG_TRACK is supported by the official sample and most guides, while TRACK_LAYOUT appears in one guide; MAX_CLIENTS is the broadly used key, while MaxPlayers appears elsewhere. Prefer the sample that ships with the exact server executable you run.

In particular, the official sample shows MAX_CLIENTS=15, whereas some guides call 24 a default. Recheck keys after server updates and after switching to a third-party server implementation. A configuration copied from an older build can fail silently when an extension, launcher or content pack changes the expected format.
