The ASRock Rack W890D8-2L2T is a high-expansion motherboard for Intel Xeon 600 workstation processors, pairing seven PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0 x16 slots with eight DDR5 ECC memory slots, dual 10GbE, and remote IPMI management. It suits builds that need several accelerators or I/O cards, but its 12 × 10.9-inch, CEB-like layout and unusual power connections make chassis and installation checks essential before buying.
What the W890D8-2L2T is designed for
ASRock Rack lists the board for Intel Xeon 600 processors for workstations. ServeTheHome identifies its socket as LGA4710-2, or E2. Check the exact processor SKU against ASRock Rack’s current product specifications and CPU Support List before ordering; family-level support does not confirm every individual CPU.
The board’s defining feature is expansion: seven PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0 x16 slots, alongside two PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0 x8 MCIO connections. That layout can serve multiple GPUs, accelerators, or high-speed add-in cards. The number of cards you can actually install depends on their physical width, the chassis, cooling, and how the complete system is configured.
Memory, storage, networking, and management
Memory
There are eight DDR5 slots, configured as one DIMM per channel. ASRock Rack specifies support for RDIMM and MRDIMM; ServeTheHome describes the slots as DDR5 ECC RDIMM. Maximum capacity, supported speeds, and qualified module part numbers should be checked in the current Memory QVL and product documentation, since those details are not established by the available specifications.

Storage
The board provides two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots. ServeTheHome reports four onboard SATA ports and shows an MCIO-to-four-SATA breakout cable. ASRock Rack specifies that the third MCIO connector can operate as PCIe 4.0 x4 or as four SATA 6Gb/s connections. Confirm the correct cable and connector compatibility with the manufacturer before purchasing.
Networking and remote management
Onboard networking consists of two 10GbE RJ45 ports using Intel E610 controllers and two 1GbE RJ45 ports using Intel i210 controllers. ASRock Rack also lists IPMI; ServeTheHome describes an ASPEED AST2600 BMC with an HTML5 remote console, remote media mounting, and an option to boot to BIOS from the power-control page.

Will it fit in a standard workstation case?
Do not assume so. ASRock Rack gives the board dimensions as 12 × 10.9 inches and describes its form factor as CEB-like. ServeTheHome also calls it CEB-like and cautions builders to check both chassis size and standoff positions. This is not a routine ATX board, and the CEB-like description does not guarantee compatibility with every CEB case.
- Check the case’s supported motherboard dimensions against the board’s 12 × 10.9-inch footprint.
- Compare the case’s standoff pattern with the board’s mounting-hole positions before installation.
- Allow for the physical width and cooling needs of the cards you plan to install in the seven full-length slots.
What to check for CPU installation and power
ServeTheHome reports four 8-pin power inputs, a four-pin board-side power-trigger header, and a separate ATX power-trigger adapter. The review also notes that installation requires the correct E2A or E2B CPU bracket, selected using the relevant manual or table. Confirm the bracket for your chosen processor rather than treating the two types as interchangeable.

In ServeTheHome’s August 28, 2026 review, Patrick Kennedy tested the W890D8-2L2T with an Intel Xeon 658X and compared it with a more workstation-focused motherboard using the same CPU and memory. The review found the results broadly close, with individual tests favoring different platforms. Who should consider this board?
- A strong fit: builders who need several PCIe cards or accelerators, ECC memory, 10GbE, and remote management on one Xeon 600 platform.
- Check carefully first: anyone reusing a case, CPU bracket, cooler, PSU, or MCIO cable, because fit and exact compatibility require verification.
- Consider another layout: builders who do not need the seven-slot expansion capacity and want a more conventional case-installation process.
