Asphalt Legends is the better choice for a new player in 2026. It remains an active arcade-racing game with mobile versions, cross-platform multiplayer and regularly added content. Mario Kart Tour is now a former service: Nintendo discontinued its smart-device service at 11:00 p.m. PT on September 29, 2026 (September 30 at 15:00 JST), so it is not a live alternative for new races or subscriptions.

The short answer

The decision is no longer a normal feature-versus-feature contest. Asphalt Legends is a playable, supported racing service that you can start now. Mario Kart Tour’s online service has ended, which removes the tours, competitive events and subscription system that defined it.

  • Choose Asphalt Legends if you want high-speed car racing, jumps, nitro, vehicle collecting, cross-platform competition, private lobbies or an active multiplayer community.
  • Remember Mario Kart Tour as a historical game if you are interested in Nintendo’s mobile racing experiment, its characters and item-based races. Do not treat it as a current alternative or recommend it as a working live service.

Asphalt is not a frictionless “free” game. Its purchases and downloadable content can accelerate progression, and Nintendo identifies in-game purchases and random items in its listing. Gameloft says competitive matchmaking uses Elo skill ratings and that races do not sell purchasable boosters that grant an advantage. That is a narrower claim than saying every part of the economy is equally generous.

Availability is the decisive difference in 2026

Asphalt Legends is still an active game

Gameloft’s Asphalt Legends Unite launch announcement covered Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, Steam, the App Store, Google Play and PlayStation 4 and 5, with Nintendo Switch support announced to follow. The game is designed as a continuing service rather than a one-time campaign: it combines a career, multiplayer events, vehicle progression and recurring competitions. Current console listings continue to describe cross-platform play.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
  • Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
  • Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
  • Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc

That matters for a mobile player because your choice is not limited to a solitary phone experience. Depending on the platform and mode, you can race people on other supported systems, join a Club, use private lobbies or move between mobile and a larger-screen edition. Features can vary by platform, so check the store page for the edition you intend to install.

Mario Kart Tour’s smart-device service has ended

Nintendo Support states that service for Mario Kart Tour on smart devices was discontinued at 11:00 p.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026. Nintendo’s July 8, 2026 announcement gives the corresponding Japan time as September 30, 2026 at 15:00 JST.

Ruby sales and new Gold Pass subscriptions stopped on July 8, 2026. Nintendo also explained that some records would remain accessible after shutdown, but that is not the same as an operating competitive service. There are no new tours, live matchmaking seasons or Gold Pass renewals to plan around.

The app’s presence on a particular phone or store should not be confused with service availability. A historical install, retained records or an old account does not restore the events and online progression that made Tour a current game.

How the driving feels

Asphalt Legends: speed, stunts and car control

Asphalt Legends is built around spectacular arcade-car racing. Tracks reward aggressive lines, jumps, ramps, barrel rolls and nitro management rather than realistic braking points or tire strategy. The basic appeal is immediate: accelerate hard, build or conserve nitro, use a stunt opportunity when it is safe, and recover quickly when a landing or takedown goes wrong.

Cars are the center of progression. You collect a garage, improve vehicles and learn which car suits a track or event. That structure gives the game a stronger “racing collection” identity than a pure party racer. It also means that a new player is managing both driving skill and a longer progression path.

The presentation is intentionally showy. If you want a serious simulation, neither game is the right category, but Asphalt is the more speed-focused of the two. Its races are about maintaining momentum and making dramatic recoveries, not about imitating road-car physics.

Mario Kart Tour: character-and-item racing, historically

Mario Kart Tour used Nintendo characters, themed courses and items that could alter a race’s outcome. Its defining rhythm was less about choosing one high-performance car and more about collecting drivers, karts and gliders, then competing through rotating tours and point-based challenges.

That distinction remains useful when describing the game’s legacy: Tour appealed to players who wanted familiar characters, compact sessions and item chaos. It did not offer the same car-focused stunt identity as Asphalt. However, these are historical characteristics. Nintendo’s shutdown notice does not promise continuing gameplay, and Tour’s former tour cadence and competitive events should not be described as active today.

Multiplayer and social play

Asphalt supports several ways to race

Nintendo’s Asphalt Legends listing says you can challenge up to seven opponents across platforms, for races of up to eight competitors. It also lists private lobbies, Clubs, cross-platform play, online scoreboards and local split-screen. The split-screen feature belongs to supported console editions; it should not be read as a claim that two people can share one phone screen.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Non-US Version)

  • Inclusi n de circuitos in ditos en el modo batalla
  • Los pilotos cuentan con el volante inteligente, que ayuda a no salirse de la pista
  • Hasta 8 pilotos en partidas de multijugador local

These options cover different needs:

  • Public multiplayer: a quick way to enter competitive races against other players.
  • Private lobbies: useful when a group wants a controlled race rather than an open matchmaking queue.
  • Clubs: a longer-term social structure for players who want shared goals and organized participation.
  • Cross-platform play: lets supported systems meet in the same multiplayer ecosystem.
  • Local split-screen: an option on supported console editions for same-room play.

Gameloft says multiplayer matchmaking is tied to Elo skill rating. That is important when evaluating the pay-to-win question: the stated design goal is to match players by demonstrated ability rather than simply by how much they have spent.

Mario Kart Tour’s multiplayer is no longer a live comparison

Mario Kart Tour’s historical appeal came from Nintendo-themed competition, tour rankings and item-driven races. Because the service has been discontinued, there is no current Tour season against which to compare Asphalt’s lobbies, Clubs or cross-platform races. A player deciding what to install today gets a functioning multiplayer ecosystem from Asphalt and an archival experience from Tour.

Modes and content depth

What Asphalt Legends offers

Gameloft’s launch material identifies several substantial modes:

  • Career: the structured route for learning the game and progressing through events.
  • Multiplayer: competitive races against other players.
  • Grand Prix: a 20-player competition built around a larger event format.
  • Drive Syndicate: a themed progression and event structure.
  • Team Pursuit: a coordinated mode in which five Syndicate players work against three Security pursuers.

Gameloft’s 2025 roadmap also recorded new or expanded ideas such as Collector and Gauntlet modes, Spotlight Events, Star and Epic Hunts, and linked special events. The same roadmap discussed work planned for 2026, including a Mastery System and multiplayer restructuring. Those are announced plans, not guarantees that every item will arrive unchanged or on a particular date.

This breadth gives Asphalt more to do than simply repeat a single race type. It also creates a busier interface and a more complicated progression calendar. Players who prefer a short, instantly understandable challenge may find the number of events and currencies demanding at first.

What Mario Kart Tour used to offer

Tour organized its content around rotating tours, themed cups, score targets and collectible loadouts. The Gold Pass added a paid layer of benefits, including access to 200cc mode and Gold rewards. That cadence encouraged regular check-ins and collection, but it depended on Nintendo continuing to run the service.

After the September 2026 shutdown, those tours are no longer an ongoing content schedule. They are part of the game’s history, not a reason to choose it over an active racer.

Progression, purchases and the pay-to-win question

How Asphalt’s economy affects play

Asphalt Legends is free to download and uses in-app purchases and downloadable content. Gameloft’s help-center explanation says purchases allow players to progress faster. In practical terms, spending can reduce the time needed to develop a garage or move through progression systems.

The same explanation says matchmaking uses Elo ratings and that races are not monetized with purchasable boosters that provide a competitive advantage. That supports a careful conclusion:

  • You can reasonably describe Asphalt as skill-rated in multiplayer, with no stated sale of a race-only booster that automatically wins a contest.
  • You should not describe the entire game as free from monetization pressure. Faster progression, random items and other economy decisions can still affect how much grinding or spending a player accepts.
  • “Pay to win” depends on the definition. If it means buying an instant in-race advantage, Gameloft says that is not how its competitive races work. If it includes paying to reach stronger cars or progression milestones sooner, purchases plainly have an effect.

Nintendo’s listing specifically flags in-game purchases and random items. Parents and players who dislike chance-based rewards should review the platform’s purchase controls before starting.

Mario Kart Tour’s former paid layer

Mario Kart Tour historically offered a monthly Gold Pass. Nintendo’s support documentation described benefits including 200cc mode and Gold rewards. Ruby sales and new subscriptions ended on July 8, 2026, before the service itself stopped in September.

That history explains why older comparisons may reach different conclusions about value. They were evaluating a live tour schedule and an active subscription. Those conditions no longer apply, so old claims about Tour’s current value, multiplayer population or subscription benefits are outdated.

Which game fits your priorities?

Pick Asphalt Legends if you want an active game to start today

  • You want races that emphasize velocity, nitro timing, jumps and recoveries.
  • You enjoy collecting cars and improving a garage over time.
  • Your friends use different supported platforms and you want cross-platform competition.
  • You need private lobbies or a Club rather than only solo events.
  • You are willing to tolerate a free-to-download progression system in which spending can save time.
  • You want new events and announced mode work instead of a completed service.

Choose a different type of game if you wanted Tour’s exact appeal

If the main attraction was Nintendo’s characters, recognizable Mario courses and item-driven party racing, Asphalt will not reproduce that identity. It is a car-focused arcade racer with a more performance-oriented progression loop. The closest honest expectation is “active high-speed alternative,” not “replacement with the same characters and items.”

Keep Mario Kart Tour in mind only for historical or archival reasons

Tour remains relevant when you are studying Nintendo’s mobile strategy, comparing former tour-based monetization or remembering a collection you built before shutdown. It is not a sensible recommendation for someone asking which mobile racer to download for live competition in 2026.

Is Asphalt Legends still worth playing?

Yes, if your priorities are speed, spectacle and an operating multiplayer service. Its active status removes the largest practical risk in a mobile game: investing time in a platform that no longer runs its core events. The combination of Career, multiplayer, Grand Prix, Drive Syndicate and Team Pursuit gives both solo and social players a route forward.

It is less attractive if you dislike frequent event structures, car-collection progression or purchases that shorten the grind. The fairest expectation is a playable arcade racer with optional spending, not a one-and-done premium campaign. Try it with purchase limits set on your device, and judge the handling and progression before spending on downloadable content or accelerators.

How to start without confusing the editions

  1. Choose the platform first. For a phone, use the official App Store or Google Play listing. Console and PC editions have their own storefront pages and feature notes.
  2. Check multiplayer support for that edition. Cross-platform play is a central feature, but local split-screen applies to supported console versions rather than every mobile installation.
  3. Begin with Career. Use the structured events to learn acceleration, nitro use, jumps and landing recovery before committing to competitive queues.
  4. Try multiplayer after learning your controls. Public races show how your driving compares, while a private lobby is better for a planned session with friends.
  5. Set a spending boundary. Purchases can speed progression, but you can decide whether that time saving is worth the cost after experiencing the normal progression loop.
  6. Follow event and roadmap information cautiously. Announced features such as Mastery System work or multiplayer restructuring are plans, so confirm their availability in the current in-game or store information.

What replaced Mario Kart Tour?

Nintendo has not announced a one-for-one replacement that preserves Tour’s exact smart-device service, tour schedule and Gold Pass structure. Asphalt Legends is the practical substitute for the broader need—an active mobile racer with multiplayer—not an official Nintendo successor.

That distinction prevents two common mistakes. First, do not send readers to look for a new Gold Pass or active Tour schedule. Second, do not promise that Asphalt has Nintendo characters, item boxes or the same short-session scoring system. Recommend it for availability and racing style, then explain the differences honestly.

Final decision

For a new player choosing a mobile racing game in 2026, install Asphalt Legends if you want something playable now. It offers high-speed arcade driving, a car-collection progression path, cross-platform races, private multiplayer options and an ongoing event structure. Mario Kart Tour’s character-and-item format may remain memorable, but Nintendo’s September 2026 service shutdown means it is no longer a live competitor.
