If you’re worried about the ASOS incident, avoid links in unexpected messages and use official channels to check your account. ASOS said it is investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms used to communicate with customers. It said names and contact details may have been accessed, but it did not believe payment-card information or account passwords were affected. That is ASOS’s current statement while the investigation continues, not a final forensic finding.
What happened, and what is known so far?
An unauthorised customer notification was sent to ASOS customers on 6 October 2026. ASOS said it was investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms used to communicate with customers. In its 6 October update, the company said names and contact details may have been accessed and that it did not believe payment-card information or account passwords were impacted.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) described the matter as an “Incident affecting ASOS customers” and advises customers to assume they may be affected, including people who did not receive the notification. This is precautionary advice while the scope is uncertain; it does not establish that every customer’s information was accessed. The NCSC’s incident guidance does not independently confirm claims in the threatening message about a specific database.

At the time of its customer-care notice, ASOS said: “We are not currently asking customers to change their ASOS account password or take any other action.” Read the current direction on the ASOS Customer Care page. That is distinct from general account-security advice: if you know you reused a password or otherwise have a vulnerable password, update it on the affected services.

What should you do to protect yourself?
Handle incident messages cautiously
- Do not click links in unexpected app notifications, emails, or text messages about the incident. Open the ASOS app yourself or type the official website address into your browser.
- Never provide personal, login, or financial information in response to unexpected contact. The ICO advises customers to be cautious about messages claiming to come from apparent hackers; see its 7 October 2026 statement.
- If you want to change a password, go directly to the official service and use its normal account settings. The ICO puts it this way: “If you want to change your password, log in to your account directly through the official website or app and update it in the usual way.”
Review password reuse and strengthen important accounts
Check whether your ASOS password is also used anywhere else. If it is, change the reused password on every account where it appears, starting with your email, banking, shopping, and other important services. A compromised email account can be especially consequential because it may be used to reset other passwords.
The NCSC recommends passkeys where available, or strong, separate passwords, and two-step verification. The options depend on each service: check whether it supports passkeys, offers two-step verification, and lets you review recent account activity. Do not assume ASOS provides a particular security setting unless its current account documentation confirms it.

Watch for unusual activity
- Review bank and payment accounts for transactions you do not recognise.
- Check important online services for unfamiliar sign-ins, account changes, or password-reset messages.
- If you find suspicious activity, contact the service or financial institution using its official app, website, or a number you already trust—not contact details in an unexpected message.

Use ASOS’s official customer-care notice for its current customer direction, and the NCSC incident page and ICO statement for public guidance. ASOS also publishes general advice on phishing, password reuse, and contacting the company in its Staying Safe Online guidance. Do not treat the threatening message’s claims about a specific database as verified by the official statements cited here.
