Asian equities sold off on 15 October 2026 after stronger-than-expected US September inflation reduced confidence in near-term Federal Reserve rate cuts. South Korea’s KOSPI fell 5.6%, leading losses as technology and AI-linked shares absorbed the biggest pressure.
What happened in Asian markets
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.2%. The KOSPI dropped 5.6%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.3%. The selling followed a weaker US session in which the S&P 500 fell 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.9%.

Why US inflation pushed rate expectations higher
Hotter inflation makes investors less confident that the Federal Reserve can cut interest rates soon. It also raises the possibility that the Fed could increase rates later in 2026. Fed-funds futures put the probability of a 25-basis-point hike at the Fed’s meeting beginning 28 October at 31.6%, up from 22.1% the previous day.

Higher expected rates increase the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings and raise borrowing costs. Those effects tend to weigh most heavily on companies whose valuations depend on profits far in the future or on continuous access to financing. That mechanism helps explain why technology shares were hit harder than the broader market during this session.
Why technology, AI and semiconductor shares led the pressure
The report says technology was the main driver after the initial CPI reaction. Investors were focused on financing risks and the timing of initial public offerings for AI-related companies. AI infrastructure projects can require large capital commitments, making their economics more sensitive to expensive credit and a higher required return.

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group, said, “Asia faces another difficult session.” He added: “KOSPI and Nikkei futures point to renewed technology weakness, with leveraged ETF flows and AI infrastructure credit risk firmly in focus.”

JPMorgan analysts similarly wrote: “While the initial selloff was triggered by the hotter-than-expected CPI, tech was the main driver of today’s selloff.” They said, “AI was again the main challenge … with financing risks and IPO timelines still at the centre of the story.” These comments describe the market’s reported focus; they do not establish that inflation alone caused every share-price move.

How South Korea and Japan differed
South Korea’s KOSPI
The KOSPI’s 5.6% decline was the largest move among the major Asian benchmarks cited. Its outsized fall is consistent with the session’s concentration in technology and semiconductor risk, although the report does not provide a sector-by-sector performance breakdown.
Japan’s Nikkei 225
The Nikkei 225 fell 1.3%, a considerably smaller decline than the KOSPI’s. The comparison is useful because both markets have significant technology exposure, but their index compositions, currencies and local trading conditions differ. A single US inflation release therefore does not translate into identical moves across the region.

The Treasury yield declined 4.4 basis points to 5.144% even as futures priced a greater chance of a Fed hike. That combination shows why one market indicator should not be treated as a complete explanation of the session. Currency levels and Australia’s weaker employment result provided additional regional information, but the report identifies the US inflation surprise and technology concerns as the central themes.

- Federal Reserve officials’ speeches in Bangkok: Their comments could reinforce or challenge the futures market’s higher hike probability.
- US producer-price data: A further indication of pipeline inflation could affect Treasury yields and rate pricing.
- US retail-sales data: Evidence of resilient or weakening demand would change the debate over how restrictive policy needs to be.
- TSMC’s third-quarter earnings: Results and management commentary could provide fresh evidence about semiconductor demand and AI-related investment.
These are upcoming catalysts, not forecasts. Each can change the market’s assessment of rates, financing conditions or chip demand.
How to interpret the selloff without overreading it
Three checks help explain why individual Asian markets moved by different amounts:
- Index exposure: Markets with greater technology and semiconductor representation can react more sharply when long-duration growth shares are repriced.
- Valuation and financing sensitivity: Companies dependent on distant earnings, external funding or large AI infrastructure budgets are more exposed to higher discount rates and credit costs.
- Local catalysts: Currency movements, domestic employment data and company earnings can amplify or cushion a global rates shock.
The figures above come from a fast-moving 15 October 2026 market report. They describe the session’s moves and the information available at that time, not a confirmed new long-term trend or a guarantee that the Federal Reserve will raise rates on 28 October.
