Asian markets moved in different directions in early trading Monday, October 12, 2026, while Brent and U.S. benchmark crude prices fell. The Associated Press reported the declines amid President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would buy diesel from Russia. The market figures are early-session snapshots, and the reported announcement does not confirm that deliveries have occurred.
How Asian markets moved
The session was mixed rather than a broad regional rise or fall. South Korea’s Kospi and Shanghai’s Composite declined; Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced. Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday. The figures below are early Monday trading levels reported by the Associated Press, not current quotes.
| Market | Early Monday move | Reported level |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea Kospi | Down 3.1% | 6,416.17 |

Trump’s statement about buying Russian diesel was also part of the day’s news, but the available reporting does not establish that it caused oil’s decline or the mixed moves in Asian equities.
What Trump said about Russian diesel
According to the AP’s account of Trump’s Friday social-media announcement, he said he had reached a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply diesel to the United States. Trump’s stated schedule was more than 300,000 tons immediately, 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons “immediately thereafter,” and another 3 million tons “within a short period of time.” Those quantities and timings are claims attributed to Trump; the report does not independently confirm that the deal was implemented or that any shipment was delivered.

Why the announcement drew criticism
Lawmakers criticized the proposed purchase as conflicting with U.S. efforts to restrict Russian oil and gas revenue that could support Russia’s war against Ukraine. The AP reported that six senators from both parties urged the administration to reverse course. It also described recently passed legislation directing substantial tariffs on leading importers of Russian oil or natural gas, subject to an exception under specified conditions. The report’s summary does not establish how the law would apply to this proposed purchase.
What the inflation survey adds
The AP also reported preliminary University of Michigan consumer survey results showing that Americans expected inflation of 4.7% over the coming year, compared with 4.6% a month earlier and 3.4% in February, before the war with Iran began. These are survey expectations, not measured future inflation or a forecast of the effect of the diesel announcement.
