Asian Paints is one of eight stocks identified in an Economic Times slideshow dated October 15, 2026, as having delivered a negative five-year return. The slideshow extract puts Asian Paints’ loss at nearly 29% for its observation period. A separate Upstox table, using a different five-year window, shows Asian Paints down 13.3% and the Nifty 50 up more than 50%.

That difference is a warning to check the date, return type and corporate-action adjustments before deciding whether a holding has genuinely underperformed. The accessible Economic Times extract does not reproduce the eighth stock’s name, so it should not be guessed.

What the October 15, 2026 report says about Asian Paints

The Economic Times item reports that Asian Paints shares fell nearly 29% over the five years covered by its slideshow. It also reports a nearly 26% decline over three years and a 15% decline in 2026 so far, all measured for that article’s publication period of October 15, 2026.

These are article-period figures, not a timeless performance rating. The exact start and end prices, whether dividends were included, and the treatment of corporate actions determine the result. A percentage without those details cannot be compared reliably with another website’s percentage.

The seven stocks shown in Upstox’s separate five-year table

Upstox published a corroborating table covering seven Nifty stocks. Its stated five-year window shows each of the following with a negative price return, while the Nifty 50 gained more than 50% over that same window:

Stock Five-year price return Important qualification
HDFC Bank -6.4% Upstox’s stated five-year window
Asian Paints -13.3% Different window from the nearly -29% Economic Times figure
TCS -36.7% Upstox’s stated five-year window
Infosys -34.3% Upstox’s stated five-year window
Wipro -42.7% Upstox’s stated five-year window
Hindustan Unilever -22.9% Upstox’s stated five-year window
HDFC Life -17.6% Upstox’s stated five-year window

The Economic Times slideshow calls the group eight stocks, but the available extract does not identify the remaining name. Treat the seven-stock Upstox table as corroboration, not as proof that it is the same list calculated on the same dates.

Rank #2

Why Asian Paints is reported at -29% in one place and -13.3% in another

Different observation dates

Even a few months can materially change a five-year return when the share price is volatile. One service may compare closing prices on exact anniversary dates; another may use the nearest trading day or a date chosen for publication. The start price and end price must be recorded alongside the percentage.

Price return versus total return

A price return measures only the change in the quoted share price. A total return also reinvests dividends. Two reports using the same dates can therefore show different results if one includes distributions and the other does not. Ask which definition was used before comparing a stock with the Nifty 50.

Bonus issues and the 10:1 split

Asian Paints investor materials discuss bonus issues and a 10:1 stock split, and compare monthly share-price movement with the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50. Historical price series need to be adjusted consistently for those actions. An unadjusted chart can make an old price look artificially high or low; an adjusted series is necessary for a meaningful long-run comparison.

How to check whether you own one of these stocks

  1. Open your current holdings statement. Use the demat or brokerage account’s holdings view, not only a watchlist. Export the statement if the account offers a downloadable portfolio report.
  2. Search the seven confirmed names. Check HDFC Bank, Asian Paints, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC Life. The eighth name in the Economic Times slideshow is not established by the available extract.
  3. Check quantity and acquisition date. A stock can show a loss in the report’s five-year window but a gain for your personal holding if you bought later, or a different loss if you bought earlier.
  4. Include all accounts. Review older demat accounts, family accounts for which you are responsible, employee-share plans and any portfolio held through a registered investment service.
  5. Record your own return basis. Note the purchase price, charges, dividends received, bonus shares and split adjustments. Your broker’s realised or unrealised return may not use the same assumptions as a news table.

How a stock can lose money while the Nifty 50 rises

An index is an aggregate, not a promise for every constituent

The Nifty 50 combines many companies. Its return reflects the weighted result of all constituents, so gains in some sectors can outweigh losses in others. A constituent can fall throughout the period while the index rises.

Sector and company exposure differ

The Upstox comparison includes banks, information-technology companies, consumer businesses, a life insurer and a paint manufacturer. Their earnings cycles, valuations, competition and sensitivity to interest rates are different. Owning one or two companies is therefore not equivalent to owning the diversified index.

Dividends and weighting change the comparison

The Nifty 50’s published performance may be quoted as a price index or a total-return index, while an individual-stock table may use only share prices. Index weighting also means a large constituent has more influence than a small one. Confirm that both sides of the comparison use compatible return series.

Checks to make before interpreting the loss

  • Observation date: write down the exact start and end trading dates.
  • Return definition: distinguish price return from total return, including whether dividends were reinvested.
  • Corporate-action treatment: verify that bonus issues and the 10:1 split are reflected in the historical series.
  • Annualized result: do not treat a five-year cumulative loss as a yearly loss. If the period is exactly five years, annualized return is calculated as (ending value / starting value)^(1/5) - 1; the published sources here do not state annualized figures.
  • Benchmark: compare with the Nifty 50 using the same dates and the same price-or-total-return convention.
  • Personal basis: account for your purchase dates, fees, taxes, dividends and additional purchases.

What is and is not established about the eight-stock list

The October 15, 2026 Economic Times extract establishes Asian Paints as one of the eight reported negative five-year performers and gives the nearly -29% figure for its article window. It does not provide the complete eight-name list in the accessible material. Upstox independently lists seven stocks and gives the returns shown above, but its Asian Paints figure is -13.3% because its dates or methodology differ. No reliable basis is available for naming the missing eighth stock.

Use the list as a prompt to audit your portfolio rather than as a buy, sell or hold signal. A negative historical return describes what happened over a selected window; it does not by itself establish what the company or the index will do next.
