This means “multiplayer” should not be read as PvP only. The announced package includes human-versus-human competition, friends cooperating against AI, and matches in which humans and bots occupy the same lobby.

Yes. Stardock’s FAQ explicitly says players can team up with friends online against AI opponents. That is the clearest confirmed co-op use case: a cooperative human team fights computer-controlled enemies rather than another human team.

What online co-op is for
- Co-op against AI: Friends share a side and battle computer opponents.
- Repeatable matches: Unlike the story campaign, co-op is part of the multiplayer/skirmish-style structure, so it is intended for replayable battles.
- Different skill levels: A co-op game lets players practice together without requiring every participant to be equally experienced in competitive play.
The FAQ also says the team was considering additional co-op-focused modes. Those possibilities are not launch commitments: no names, rules, maps, player limits, or release timing have been formally announced for them. Treat the basic online co-op-versus-AI feature as confirmed and any extra co-op variant as unannounced until Stardock publishes specifications.
Can you play Ashes II offline against bots?
Yes. Stardock says Ashes II will support full offline play in both the campaign and skirmish against AI bots. You will not need an online opponent for those two categories of play.

- Campaign: Play the United Earth Forces’ story-driven near-future campaign offline.
- Team games with AI: Join or create a side while computer-controlled allies and opponents fill out the battle.
- Free-for-all against AI: Fight numerous bot-controlled opponents without human participants.
- Solo skirmish practice: Select a battlefield and test strategies against computer opponents.
“Offline” here refers to the ability to run campaign and AI skirmish play without an internet connection. It does not mean that online PvP or online co-op can be hosted without connectivity. Those modes inherently require an online session.

Is Ashes II PvP, co-op, or both?
It is both. The Steam listing identifies online PvP and online co-op, while Stardock’s release announcement describes the multiplayer package as including “Multiplayer, Competitive and Co-Op.” The distinction is about the opposing side, not whether the game has multiplayer at all.

Player-versus-player matches
In PvP, human players compete against one another. Stardock’s descriptions cover purely human games, and the previewed multiplayer structure includes competitive team battles and solo battles. The exact ranked, matchmaking, tournament, or spectator features have not been specified in the available announcements, so they should not be assumed.
Cooperative matches
In co-op, human players cooperate against AI opponents. This is the mode to choose when the goal is to coordinate with friends rather than defeat them.
Mixed human-and-AI games
Stardock’s FAQ gives a separate answer for online multiplayer: players can create purely human games or mixed human-player and AI-player games. Bots can therefore supplement a human lobby instead of requiring every slot to be occupied by a person. The announcement confirms the capability but does not yet publish the final team-balancing rules, bot-selection controls, or whether every map and match type will allow substitutions.

The strongest published number is up to eight players in Stardock’s report about the Steam Next Fest demo. That report described full PvP, co-op against AI, and solo skirmish in the demo configuration.

Eight should be treated as a documented demo or playtest setup, not as a guaranteed final launch maximum. The current Steam listing and the release announcement do not establish a definitive retail player cap. Until a later official specification confirms it, avoid interpreting the demo’s eight-player figure as the number supported on every map, in every mode, or at launch.
What the player-count evidence does establish
- A multiplayer build has supported matches with as many as eight participants.
- The demo included both competitive PvP and cooperative play against AI.
- Solo skirmish was available alongside multiplayer options.
- The final launch limit, mode-by-mode limits, and whether AI bots occupy additional slots are not stated.
Which factions can you play?
Stardock’s release announcement says players can command any of three factions in skirmish and multiplayer:

The announcement confirms faction availability, not balance details. It does not provide a unit roster, faction-specific bonuses, preferred team combinations, or a statement that all three factions will be unlocked from the first match. Those details should wait for a later official guide.
What are the three main game modes?
Campaign
The Campaign is the narrative option. The Steam listing describes leading the United Earth Forces through a story-driven near-future scenario. Stardock also confirms that the campaign supports full offline play, making it the appropriate choice for a self-contained experience without online opponents.

The available description does not say that the campaign itself is co-op. Do not assume that campaign missions can be played by multiple people merely because the separate multiplayer mode supports co-op.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is the online hub for PvP, co-op against AI, and mixed human-and-AI games. It is the mode to use when you want to invite friends, compete against other people, or combine human participants with bots. Stardock’s FAQ confirms both pure-human and mixed lobbies, while the Steam listing identifies online PvP and online co-op as product features.
Instant Action
Instant Action is the quick, repeatable battle option. Steam describes it as choosing a battlefield and fighting computer-controlled opponents designed by experienced RTS developers. It is therefore the natural entry point for solo practice, experimenting with a faction, or playing a skirmish without committing to the campaign.

Because Stardock separately confirms offline skirmish against AI, Instant Action should be understood as part of the game’s bot-focused skirmish experience. The final menu labels, map list, difficulty controls, and whether every Instant Action setup can be shared online have not been published.

Practical expectations for different players
If you mostly play solo
You have two announced offline paths: the narrative campaign and AI skirmish. Instant Action is designed for selecting a battlefield and confronting computer opponents, while the FAQ specifically allows team-versus-team games with AI and free-for-alls against numerous bots. You should be able to practice without depending on an active player population.
If you play with a regular group
Online co-op is the confirmed way to cooperate against AI. The eight-player demo configuration suggests that large-group battles were tested, but it does not establish how many friends the final release will support. Plan around the official lobby limit published at launch rather than assuming every eight-player demo arrangement remains available.
If you prefer competition
Online PvP is part of the announced feature set, and all three factions are planned for multiplayer. Competitive players should still wait for final details about matchmaking, rankings, team sizes, and balance rules because those systems are not specified in the current announcements.
Bottom line on Ashes II multiplayer
Ashes of the Singularity II is planned as a hybrid RTS package: a solo offline campaign, offline bot skirmishes, online co-op against AI, online PvP, and mixed human-and-AI multiplayer. The clearest confirmed co-op scenario is friends teaming up online against bots. The clearest offline answer is also yes—you can play the campaign and skirmishes without an internet connection. Eight players have been demonstrated in a 2026 demo, but that is not yet the guaranteed retail cap. With the planned November 10, 2026 release still ahead, treat the core modes as confirmed and the final limits and extra co-op formats as pending official clarification.
