Asha Sharma’s Xbox strategy is a two-track portfolio plan: continue creating original intellectual property for new audiences while investing more heavily in established franchises with proven recognition. The approach also treats games as the foundation for wider entertainment brands, but Xbox has not announced a complete new-game slate, release timetable or return to a particular exclusivity policy.
Sharma’s strategy in one sentence
Sharma is not choosing between new games and familiar series. Her stated direction is to build both: develop original properties capable of reaching different audiences, and strengthen the biggest existing franchises through sustained investment and broader distribution.
| Track | Strategic purpose | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| New intellectual property | Create original worlds, characters and game concepts that can attract audiences Xbox does not already reach. | Sharma reaffirmed the need to create new games and properties; no specific unannounced project or launch date was identified. |
| Leading franchises | Concentrate resources on series that already have strong audience recognition and can support continued engagement. | Xbox intends to invest more strongly in its biggest franchises, with decisions connected to platform health, studio execution and audience reach. |
New IP remains part of the plan
Comments attributed to Sharma in Gamereactor’s coverage make clear that original properties have not been dropped. New IP is the mechanism for reaching different audiences rather than merely refreshing the current Xbox audience. That matters because a portfolio built only on sequels can be efficient in the short term but may eventually narrow the company’s creative range and limit expansion into new communities.

Established brands remain the center of gravity
The other half of the plan is deliberately selective. Xbox wants to put more weight behind franchises that already have awareness, players and commercial potential. This does not mean every existing series receives the same treatment: the stated decision criteria include the health of the platform, a studio’s ability to execute and the size or reach of the audience a project can serve.

Why hardware and platform economics still matter
Microsoft’s leadership announcement describes gaming through three connected pillars: hardware, content and community. Windows Central’s interview coverage also characterized Sharma’s direction as a renewed focus on Xbox’s core platform. In practical terms, game investment is being evaluated not only as a series of standalone releases but as part of the health of the wider Xbox business.
That creates a balancing problem. A major franchise can generate engagement and strengthen the platform, while a new property can broaden the audience and provide a future franchise. Either type of project still depends on studio capacity, reliable delivery and a distribution strategy that reaches enough players to justify the investment.

The global scale is substantial. Satya Nadella’s official announcement of Sharma’s appointment said Microsoft’s gaming business had more than 500 million monthly active users in 2026. That figure gives the portfolio strategy a worldwide distribution context: Xbox can assess games and brands by their ability to serve a large, diverse ecosystem rather than by console sales alone.
What Xbox means by “brands beyond games”
Xbox’s brand strategy is being organized through XP, a division led by President Kayleen Walters. The official announcement says XP covers film and television, consumer products, strategic partnerships and live experiences. Its four investment areas are designed to extend a franchise while keeping the game at the center of the relationship with players.

| XP area | Role described by Xbox | Examples of activity supported by the remit |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Pictures | Film and television extensions of Xbox properties. | Screen adaptations and other audiovisual storytelling; no particular project is confirmed here. |
| Xbox Products | Consumer products connected to Xbox franchises. | Merchandise and licensed goods that let fans engage outside a game. |
| Xbox Places | Live experiences tied to fandoms. | Physical attractions, events or other in-person experiences; no specific venue or launch was announced. |
| Xbox Partnerships | Strategic work with creators, brands and communities. | Collaborations, sponsorships or licensing arrangements, without implying any unannounced deal. |
The stated purpose is to help franchises reach more people, create deeper connections with existing players and new fans, and give communities more ways to grow worldwide. In this model, a game is the foundation of a larger entertainment property rather than a product isolated from every other medium.
“We are stewards of some of the most loved stories and characters in entertainment and bring players and creators together around the fun and community of gaming in entirely new ways,” Sharma said in Microsoft’s announcement.

The scale behind the brand push
Xbox’s own announcements provide two indicators of the commercial ambition. Microsoft reported more than 500 million monthly active users across its gaming business in 2026. Separately, XBOX Wire reported that Minecraft grew from 350 million units sold to more than 425 million during Kayleen Walters’ tenure at Mojang, and that Minecraft merchandising became one of the top 20 globally. Those are company-reported figures, not independent market measurements, but they show why Xbox sees established game properties as potential entertainment platforms.
Matthew Ball, XBOX’s chief strategy officer, summarized the broader objective as: “Our ambition at XBOX is to be the number one entertainment company in the world.” XP is the organizational expression of that ambition, while Sharma’s portfolio approach determines which games and franchises supply the stories and communities that can support it.

What has not been announced
The available October 2026 reporting supports the strategic direction, not a release roadmap. Sharma’s comments did not identify a complete list of new games, assign particular studios to unannounced projects or provide a timetable.
- No specific new IP was confirmed as the first project under the strategy.
- No release window or production schedule was supplied for a new portfolio of games.
- No promise was made that a particular franchise will receive a sequel, remake or spin-off.
- No exclusivity window or blanket change to Xbox’s platform policy was announced.
- No individual XP film, series, product, attraction or partnership should be treated as confirmed without a separate announcement.
Will Xbox exclusives come back?
Sharma’s strategy does not answer that question. The stated emphasis is on platform health, studio execution and audience reach, while Microsoft’s messaging places hardware, content and community in the same business framework. Those priorities can support different distribution choices for different games, but they do not establish a universal exclusivity rule or a guaranteed return to one.
The useful test will be project by project: where a game is announced, which audiences Xbox says it is targeting, how the studio plans to deliver it and how the release fits the health of the platform. Until those details appear, claims about a restored or abandoned exclusives strategy go beyond the announced evidence.
How to judge whether the plan is working
Readers can evaluate execution against observable evidence rather than slogans:
- New creative supply: Xbox announces original properties with identifiable teams, concepts and production milestones.
- Franchise quality: major series receive investment that results in dependable releases, not just more announcements.
- Audience expansion: games and related projects reach new communities without neglecting existing players.
- Platform contribution: releases strengthen engagement across the Xbox ecosystem while supporting hardware and community goals.
- Brand extensions with substance: XP projects add meaningful ways to participate instead of functioning only as licensing exercises.
For now, the clearest conclusion is that Xbox is pursuing a portfolio—not a single bet. New IP supplies future growth, established franchises provide recognition and scale, and XP is intended to carry the strongest properties into screen, product, live-experience and partnership formats. The pipeline, timing and exact platform choices remain to be demonstrated by future announcements.
