Use Asana’s native status updates when your team needs a concise project narrative—progress, highlights, task lists, and a regular update history. Choose AgileCharts for Asana when the reporting job calls for dashboard templates, custom charts, or Scrum metrics such as burndown, burnup, and sprint velocity. These are different feature sets, not a tested head-to-head recommendation.
Choose the reporting workflow that fits the question
| Reporting need | Better fit | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Communicate project health and explain what changed | Asana status updates | A selected status, highlights, task lists, charts, reusable sections, collaboration, and a chronological record of past updates. |
| See work through dashboards or Scrum charts | AgileCharts for Asana | Preset dashboard chart templates, custom charts, and Scrum burndown, burnup, and sprint-velocity charts. |
Asana describes AgileCharts as an integration in its Reporting category. Its listing and Asana’s status-update feature page describe capabilities; they do not establish comparative performance or prove that one option is better for every team. Create a narrative status update in Asana
Native status updates are organized around a project’s progress rather than a separate analytics dashboard. Asana says updates are created from the project’s Progress tab. The feature page also refers to the Overview tab as a place where older updates appear chronologically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the project’s Progress tab. Start the update from the project whose progress you want to communicate.
- Choose the status. Asana lists five options: on track, at risk, off track, on hold, or complete.
- Add the context readers need. Include project highlights, completed or in-progress task lists, and charts where useful. Teams can also use reusable custom sections to structure updates around recurring topics.
- Coordinate and publish. Multiple people can collaborate on an update. Asana also supports comments, which can keep discussion attached to the report.
- Set a cadence if needed. Teams can program reminders, including a reminder for the day before an update is due.
Older updates appear chronologically in the project’s Progress or Overview tab, giving readers a way to review the project’s reporting history. The precise page labels and placement can change as Asana updates its interface.

When charts belong in the update—and when they need their own dashboard
Use native charts for context in a project update
Asana says status updates can include automatically generated charts. These can sit alongside highlights and task lists, so a reader can see visual context within the narrative report. The feature description does not specify every chart type or configuration, so do not assume that a particular Scrum metric is available natively.
Use AgileCharts for chart templates and Scrum metrics
Asana’s AgileCharts listing names preset chart templates, custom charts, and Scrum charts for burndown, burnup, and sprint velocity. That makes it the more directly documented fit when the team specifically needs those chart types or wants dashboard-style reporting. The listing describes vendor-stated capabilities; it is not an independent technical evaluation.

Check access and cost before choosing
Asana’s status-update feature page lists Personal, Starter, Advanced, and Enterprise plans as including status updates. Plan names and packaging can change, so verify current availability in Asana’s plan details. The AgileCharts listing mentions a free account but does not state current paid pricing or plan limits; a free-account mention is not enough to compare total cost or access with Asana plans.
