AMD’s AI work spans three different scales: local workloads on supported Ryzen AI PCs, GPU development and deployment through ROCm, and data-center infrastructure built around Instinct accelerators. The right path depends on the hardware you have, the software it supports and the size of the workload—not simply on whether a product carries an “AI” label.
What is AMD doing in AI?
AMD develops both AI-capable hardware and software for using it. For an individual PC user, the most relevant option may be a Ryzen AI processor with a neural processing unit (NPU). For GPU-based model development, training or inference, AMD offers ROCm, a software platform for supported GPUs. For large-scale infrastructure, AMD positions Instinct GPUs and its Helios rack-scale platform for AI and high-performance computing (HPC).
These are related parts of AMD’s portfolio, not interchangeable products. A Ryzen AI PC is a personal-computing platform; ROCm is a developer software stack; Instinct and Helios are data-center infrastructure. AMD describes their capabilities on its Ryzen AI Software, ROCm and Instinct and Helios pages.
Can Ryzen AI run AI locally?
Yes, supported Ryzen AI PCs can run certain AI workloads locally. AMD says developers can deploy pretrained models on a supported processor’s NPU, integrated GPU (iGPU), or a combination of those resources. That can suit on-device inference and experimentation with workloads such as language models, computer vision, recommendation, and image or video generation. Actual model support and performance depend on the software path, model and specific system.

Check the processor, not just the Ryzen name
“Ryzen” alone does not mean a PC has an NPU or is supported by Ryzen AI software. AMD’s Ryzen AI Software Developer Hub lists supported processors and software routes. Check that compatibility information for the exact processor and system before buying hardware or following setup instructions.
Choose an execution route
AMD says Ryzen AI software lets developers port pretrained PyTorch or TensorFlow models for deployment through ONNX Runtime on the NPU or integrated GPU of select Ryzen AI-powered laptops. For Ryzen integrated graphics, AMD’s developer hub also lists ROCm, DirectML and Lemonade as possible software routes. The hub describes DirectML as a way to convert models to ONNX and optimize iGPU deployment, while Lemonade is an open-source multimodal API that can allocate CPU, NPU and iGPU resources.
Those routes are not a guarantee that every model will run on every Ryzen system. Consult the current compatibility pages and technical documentation for the relevant operating system, processor and software version before choosing a route.

What is the difference between Ryzen AI and ROCm?
Ryzen AI software focuses on deploying supported AI workloads on select Ryzen PCs, including through an NPU. ROCm is a broader GPU software platform for AI and HPC development and deployment on supported AMD GPUs. AMD says ROCm can also support model work on Ryzen integrated graphics; it recommends ROCm for larger models and workloads with higher throughput, memory-bandwidth, graphics or compute demands.
| Path | Typical scale and hardware | Software role | Key check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen AI software | Supported Ryzen AI laptop or PC with an NPU; can use the NPU, iGPU or both | Deploy pretrained models on select systems, including through ONNX Runtime | Confirm the exact processor and software compatibility in AMD’s developer hub |
| ROCm | Supported AMD GPU, including select Radeon graphics cards; AMD also describes support for Ryzen iGPU | GPU-focused AI and HPC tools for development, training, optimization and inference | Check the current supported hardware matrix and the framework, operating-system and software requirements |
| Instinct and Helios | Accelerators and integrated systems for data-center and rack-scale deployments | Infrastructure for large-scale AI training, inference and fine-tuning, as well as HPC | Assess system design, deployment needs and current availability through a verified procurement path |
ROCm brings together programming models, tools, compilers, libraries and runtimes. AMD’s current overview describes workflows involving frameworks and tools including PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, AMD Primus, Quark, AITER, vLLM and SGLang. That breadth does not mean every combination is supported on every GPU: AMD’s overview specifies select Radeon graphics cards, so check the current ROCm information and detailed compatibility documentation for the hardware you plan to use.

What hardware do you need to run AI on AMD?
Start with the workload and scale, then verify software compatibility for the exact hardware. The product family name by itself does not establish that a model, framework or workflow will work.
- For a local PC workload: Identify whether you need an NPU, integrated GPU or both. Confirm that the exact Ryzen processor is supported by the intended Ryzen AI software or other deployment route.
- For GPU-based development or inference: Identify the AMD GPU and check it against ROCm’s current hardware support information. Then verify the required operating system, framework, model and ROCm version.
- For larger training or production deployment: Estimate memory capacity and bandwidth, throughput, power and cooling needs, and whether the workload requires a multi-GPU, multi-node or rack-scale system. Evaluate Instinct infrastructure against those requirements rather than treating it as a desktop upgrade.
- For any purchase or deployment: Check availability and total system cost through an appropriate vendor or procurement channel. AMD’s portfolio descriptions do not establish a universal best-value system or a current retail price.
Local execution may be important if a workload must stay on the device, but that requirement alone does not determine which model or hardware will fit. Model size, available memory, speed and compatibility also matter. Where GPU throughput, memory bandwidth or compute demands are high, AMD points developers toward ROCm; for enterprise-scale deployment, assess the complete accelerator and system configuration.
What AMD’s adoption figures do—and do not—show
AMD’s 2025 annual report, published in 2026, reported out-of-the-box ROCm support for more than two million models on Hugging Face and a tenfold increase in ROCm downloads during 2025. These are company-reported adoption figures, not an independent usage audit or a benchmark of model performance. They indicate reported ecosystem growth, but they do not establish that a particular model will run on a particular AMD system or that one AMD product outperforms another.
How to choose among AMD’s AI paths
- Choose the Ryzen AI path when the goal is experimenting with supported local workloads on a compatible PC and its NPU or integrated GPU.
- Consider ROCm when developing, training, optimizing or serving models on a supported AMD GPU, and when the required frameworks and hardware are compatible.
- Evaluate Instinct or Helios when the workload calls for data-center accelerators or rack-scale infrastructure for AI or HPC.
Before settling on a system, compare scale, execution hardware, framework and model support, memory and throughput needs, deployment constraints, power and cooling, availability, and total system cost. AMD’s cited product information describes capabilities and positioning; it does not provide independent head-to-head testing, current retail pricing or a universal recommendation.
