Short answer: Apollo 8 and Artemis II both carried astronauts to the Moon’s vicinity, but they were not repeat missions. Apollo 8 entered lunar orbit and circled the Moon 10 times in December 1968. Artemis II flew a crewed lunar flyby in April 2026, testing the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System and integrated deep-space operations before returning to Earth. Artemis II neither entered lunar orbit nor landed.

At a glance: Apollo 8 and Artemis II

The missions belong to different generations and served different test plans. Apollo 8 proved that a crewed Apollo spacecraft could travel to the Moon, operate in lunar orbit and return safely, helping clear the way for the Apollo landings. Artemis II is the first crewed flight of NASA’s Artemis campaign and the first crewed test of Orion and the Space Launch System (SLS). Its planned and completed profile was a flyby: the spacecraft approached the Moon, used a return trajectory and came home without entering lunar orbit.

Comparison point Apollo 8 Artemis II
Mission dates Launched December 21, 1968; splashed down December 27, 1968 Launched April 1, 2026; splashed down April 10, 2026
Crew Frank Borman, James Lovell Jr. and William Anders; three astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen; four astronauts
Spacecraft and launcher Saturn V and Apollo command and service module CSM-103 Space Launch System and Orion
Flight profile Lunar-orbit mission with 10 revolutions around the Moon Crewed lunar flyby and return; no lunar orbit insertion or landing
NASA-listed duration Six days, three hours and 42 seconds Nine days, one hour and 32 minutes
Primary role Demonstrate the crew, command and service module, ground facilities and procedures needed for later lunar operations Test crewed Orion, SLS and integrated deep-space systems and gather data for later crewed lunar missions

That table’s central distinction is the one most likely to be lost in a headline: an orbit and a flyby are different mission classes. Apollo 8 spent time repeatedly passing over the lunar surface. Artemis II’s trajectory carried it around the Moon and back toward Earth without becoming a lunar satellite.

Orbit versus flyby: what the crews actually did

Apollo 8’s lunar orbit

After launch, Apollo 8 performed the translunar journey to the Moon and entered lunar orbit. The crew completed 10 revolutions, then fired the spacecraft’s engine for trans-Earth injection. During those passes, Borman, Lovell and Anders became the first humans to see the Moon’s far side. The orbit provided repeated opportunities to navigate, communicate, manage consumables and operate the command and service module in the lunar environment.

Artemis II’s lunar flyby

Artemis II used a return trajectory for a crewed flyby. The spacecraft approached the Moon, went around it, and continued on a path back to Earth. There was no lunar-orbit insertion burn, no series of lunar revolutions and no landing attempt. The flyby allowed NASA to exercise Orion and its supporting systems in deep space while avoiding the additional propellant, navigation and operational demands of remaining in lunar orbit.

In plain language, a lunar orbit means the spacecraft is captured by the Moon’s gravity and repeatedly circles it until another maneuver sends it away. A flyby means the spacecraft follows a path that bends around the Moon but retains enough energy to continue onward. That distinction affects propulsion, navigation, communications planning, consumables and the length and type of crew operations.

Calling Artemis II a “Moon mission” is accurate, but calling it a repeat of Apollo 8 is not. Both flights carried people beyond low Earth orbit, yet one demonstrated sustained lunar-orbit operations and the other demonstrated a modern crewed spacecraft’s complete deep-space journey out and back.

Why Apollo 8 flew

NASA framed Apollo 8 as a systems-and-operations demonstration before the lunar landing missions. Its objectives covered the coordinated performance of the crew, the command and service module and ground-support facilities. The flight also tested translunar injection, command-and-service-module navigation and communications, midcourse corrections, consumables management, passive thermal control and procedures intended for future lunar operations.

Translunar injection was the major departure maneuver that placed Apollo 8 on its route from Earth toward the Moon. Midcourse corrections then allowed the crew and flight controllers to refine that path. Once at the Moon, the spacecraft’s navigation and communications systems had to work while it was on the far side, temporarily out of direct contact with Earth. The crew also had to monitor supplies and spacecraft temperatures through a mission far longer and more remote than earlier crewed flights.

The mission was not simply a sightseeing expedition. Engineers and controllers needed evidence that the spacecraft could be directed to the Moon, operated there and brought home while the crew managed long communications delays, limited supplies and a demanding navigation problem. NASA reports that Apollo 8 achieved all of its primary and detailed test objectives.

Why Artemis II flew

Artemis II was designed as the first crewed Artemis flight and the first crewed test flight of Orion and SLS. NASA grouped its priorities around sustaining the crew, demonstrating systems and operations for a future crewed lunar campaign, retrieving hardware and mission data for evaluation, demonstrating emergency operations where practical and verifying spacecraft subsystems.

Those priorities covered more than the rocket’s launch performance. Orion had to support four people through ascent, Earth departure, deep-space navigation, lunar proximity, the return trip and atmospheric reentry. Controllers also needed data from the integrated vehicle: how Orion and SLS interfaces behaved together, how onboard subsystems performed over the full mission and how recovery operations worked after splashdown.

Those objectives explain the flyby profile. Orion had to support four astronauts through launch, an extended deep-space mission, lunar proximity operations and atmospheric reentry. The flight generated performance data from the integrated vehicle rather than from a lunar landing sequence. Artemis II therefore acts as a bridge between uncrewed development flights and later missions intended to perform more complex lunar operations.

Crew comparison

Apollo 8: three astronauts

Frank Borman commanded Apollo 8, with James Lovell Jr. and William Anders. The three-person crew reflected the Apollo command-module design and the mission’s 1968 operational model. Anders made the photograph later known as “Earthrise” while the spacecraft was in lunar orbit on December 24.

Artemis II: four astronauts

Artemis II carried Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Hansen represented the Canadian Space Agency, making Artemis II an international crewed mission rather than an all-NASA flight. Orion’s four-seat configuration is one visible difference between the two programs’ crew architectures.

The extra astronaut does not by itself make Artemis II a larger or more ambitious mission than Apollo 8. Crew size is tied to spacecraft design, life-support capacity, workload and the specific test objectives. The meaningful comparison is what each crew had to accomplish with its vehicle and trajectory.

The international element also marks a change in program structure. Apollo 8’s listed crew came from NASA’s American astronaut corps, while Artemis II included a Canadian astronaut as part of a broader international approach to future lunar exploration. That difference is about partnership and program architecture, not a change to the basic flight-profile comparison.

Vehicles from two eras

Saturn V and Apollo CSM-103

Apollo 8 launched on the Saturn V, the heavy-lift rocket developed for Apollo, and used command and service module CSM-103. The command module housed the crew and returned to Earth; the service module supplied propulsion, power and other support functions during the voyage. Together they were the system NASA needed to validate for lunar missions before a landing attempt.

SLS and Orion

Artemis II launched on the Space Launch System and carried the Orion spacecraft. Orion is designed for crewed missions beyond low Earth orbit, while SLS supplies the energy needed to send the vehicle toward the Moon. Artemis II tested the two as an integrated crewed system, including their interfaces, flight operations and recovery sequence.

The names of the rockets should not be treated as a simple performance contest. Saturn V and SLS were developed for different programs, spacecraft, schedules and mission architectures. The useful comparison is architectural: Apollo combined Saturn V with the Apollo CSM for a 1960s lunar campaign; Artemis combines SLS with Orion as the initial crewed element of a longer-term lunar exploration campaign.

Mission timeline and milestones

Apollo 8’s 1968 flight

  1. December 21, 1968: Apollo 8 launched from Earth on Saturn V.
  2. Translunar phase: The crew and ground teams performed navigation, communications and midcourse activities during the trip to the Moon.
  3. Lunar orbit: Apollo 8 entered orbit and completed 10 revolutions. The crew saw the far side of the Moon for the first time in human history.
  4. December 24: William Anders took the Earthrise photograph while the spacecraft was in lunar orbit.
  5. Trans-Earth injection: The service-module engine sent the spacecraft out of lunar orbit toward Earth.
  6. December 27, 1968: The command module splashed down, ending a mission NASA lists as six days, three hours and 42 seconds long.

Artemis II’s 2026 flight

  1. April 1, 2026: Artemis II launched with Wiseman, Glover, Koch and Hansen aboard Orion.
  2. Earth departure and deep-space operations: The crew and controllers evaluated the integrated SLS-Orion system, life-support performance, navigation, communications and other subsystems.
  3. Lunar flyby: Orion passed the Moon on its return trajectory without entering lunar orbit or attempting a landing.
  4. Record-setting distance: During the flyby, the crew surpassed the previous human distance-from-Earth record, set by Apollo 13.
  5. April 10, 2026: Orion splashed down after a NASA-listed duration of nine days, one hour and 32 minutes.

Artemis II’s Earthset image echoed the visual legacy of Apollo 8’s Earthrise. NASA highlighted the connection while also treating the newer photograph as a product of a different spacecraft, crew and mission profile.

How long did each mission last?

Apollo 8 lasted six days, three hours and 42 seconds, according to NASA’s mission detail. Artemis II lasted nine days, one hour and 32 minutes. Artemis II therefore spent roughly three additional days in flight, but duration alone does not measure difficulty or achievement. Apollo 8’s 10 lunar orbits required the crew to remain in lunar orbit and then execute a precise departure. Artemis II’s longer elapsed time supported a modern deep-space test with four crew members and an integrated Orion-SLS system on a flyby trajectory.

Comparing the numbers without their mission plans can mislead. Apollo 8’s duration includes lunar-orbit operations; Artemis II’s includes a longer end-to-end test of Orion and its systems without a lunar-orbit stay. Neither figure should be presented as a direct productivity score.

Historical importance and legacy

What Apollo 8 changed

Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. Its successful navigation, communications, spacecraft operation and return demonstrated that the Apollo program could conduct crewed lunar operations. The far-side views and Earthrise photograph also changed how people pictured Earth’s place in space. Most importantly for the program’s sequence, the mission supplied confidence and operational knowledge before later Apollo crews attempted landings.

What Artemis II established

Artemis II established a crewed deep-space operating baseline for the Artemis campaign. It tested Orion and SLS with people aboard, collected hardware and performance data for evaluation and demonstrated that a four-person crew could travel to the lunar vicinity and return. The mission’s distance record and Earthset image gave it a public legacy, but its engineering role is the more consequential comparison point: it prepared the system for later crewed lunar missions rather than reproducing Apollo 8’s orbit.

Why the photographs matter

Apollo 8’s Earthrise image was made while the spacecraft was in lunar orbit on December 24, 1968. The photograph showed Earth appearing above the lunar horizon and became one of the most recognizable images associated with human spaceflight. It was both a visual record of the mission and a symbol of Earth’s isolation in space.

During Artemis II’s flyby, the crew captured an Earthset image. NASA explicitly connected that image with Apollo 8’s Earthrise, creating a visual conversation across nearly six decades. The connection is meaningful, but it should not obscure the technical difference: Apollo 8’s photograph came during repeated lunar-orbit passes, while Artemis II’s came during a flyby and return trajectory.

What the comparison does and does not prove

NASA’s mission descriptions support a clear comparison of dates, crews, vehicles, flight profiles, durations, objectives and milestones. They do not establish a directly comparable total cost for Apollo 8 and Artemis II. Development spending, launch infrastructure, accounting periods and program boundaries differ substantially, so a single side-by-side price would create a false sense of precision.

The same caution applies to crew experience before launch. NASA comparison material can provide background on astronaut assignments, but any interval calculated from a projected launch date should not be presented as a final postflight measurement. The completed mission facts are the launch and splashdown dates, crew, vehicle, trajectory and duration listed above.

Common misunderstandings

  • “Artemis II orbited the Moon like Apollo 8.” No. Apollo 8 entered lunar orbit and made 10 revolutions. Artemis II performed a lunar flyby and returned without lunar-orbit insertion.
  • “Artemis II was a lunar landing mission.” No. It was a crewed test flight and flyby. The mission did not land.
  • “The longer mission was automatically the more difficult one.” Elapsed time is only one metric. The missions had different trajectories, spacecraft, crew sizes and test objectives.
  • “Apollo 8 and Artemis II used equivalent hardware.” They did not. Apollo 8 used Saturn V and Apollo CSM-103; Artemis II used SLS and Orion.
  • “The missions had the same historical purpose.” Apollo 8 validated Apollo lunar-orbit operations before the landings. Artemis II validated a modern crewed deep-space system for the Artemis campaign.

Bottom line

Apollo 8 was the first crewed lunar-orbit mission: three astronauts, 10 lunar revolutions and a six-day, three-hour, 42-second flight that proved Apollo could operate at the Moon and return. Artemis II was a four-person, nine-day, one-hour, 32-minute lunar flyby that tested Orion, SLS and integrated deep-space operations, set a new human distance-from-Earth record and prepared the Artemis campaign for later missions. They share a destination and a lasting visual legacy, but their flight profiles and purposes were fundamentally different.
