The Art & Science Somerset is a pocket-spring mattress offered in four comfort levels, from extra firm to extra comfort. Bedbuyer rates it 4.3/5 and describes its layered construction, while CHOICE lists measurements and specifications for one configuration. Those are third-party descriptions and ratings—not a firsthand test by this publication. The main buying decision is which comfort level suits you, followed by checking the current size, price and retailer terms.
What is the Art & Science Somerset mattress?
The Somerset is a spring mattress sold under the Art & Science name. CHOICE describes its listed configuration as having a pocket-spring core. Its specifications apply to that product listing, not automatically to every size or comfort option. CHOICE’s Art & Science Somerset review identifies the configuration it assessed.
What firmness options does the Somerset have?
Bedbuyer describes four comfort choices and assigns each a firmness score on its own scale. These scores are Bedbuyer’s assessments, not standardized measurements or a guarantee of how the mattress will feel to every sleeper.
| Option | Bedbuyer firmness score | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Extra firm | 9/10 | Firmest of the four options in Bedbuyer’s assessment |
| Firm | 7.5/10 | Firmer than the balanced and extra-comfort options in Bedbuyer’s assessment |
| Balanced comfort | 5/10 | Middle option in Bedbuyer’s assessment |
| Extra comfort | 3/10 | Softest of the four options in Bedbuyer’s assessment |
Bedbuyer suggests that softer options may suit side sleepers and firmer options may suit people who prefer a firmer surface. Treat that as general guidance from the reviewer, not a prediction: comfort depends on the individual, and the descriptions alone cannot establish which option will work for you. The Bedbuyer Somerset review, last updated August 20, 2026, also gives the mattress an overall rating of 4.3/5.

How to decide whether it is right for you
- Start with comfort preference: use the four labels and Bedbuyer’s scores as a comparison aid, not a standardized scale. If possible, try the relevant option or confirm the retailer’s exchange and sleep-promise conditions before buying.
- Confirm the exact configuration: check the selected size and comfort level, especially if you are comparing listed dimensions or specifications.
- Check the total price and terms at checkout: prices can vary by size and comfort option, and promotions may change. The retailer listing is the place to verify the current amount and any conditions.
- Match the choice to your own needs: Bedbuyer’s sleep-position suggestions are broad reviewer guidance; they cannot establish personal fit or predict sleep outcomes.
Verdict
The Somerset is worth considering if you want a pocket-spring mattress with four distinct comfort choices and value having a retailer-stated sleep promise. The strongest evidence available here is third-party product description, configuration-specific specifications and Bedbuyer’s subjective review—not firsthand testing. Choose by the feel you prefer, then verify the exact variant and current retailer conditions before purchasing.
