ARRI Film Lab is the better fit when you need a controllable film pipeline inside a supported OpenFX host, especially for adjustable grain, film-format behavior, print/process color, halation, gate weave, and anamorphic treatment. It is not a universal replacement for every film-emulation plugin. The decisive questions are whether your host and color-managed pipeline are supported, whether its controls match the look you need, how it behaves on mixed-camera footage, and whether its license terms suit your production.
Version 1.5, announced by ARRI on October 12, 2026, adds more format, grain, detail, anamorphic, and halation controls. ARRI also reports processing of up to four times faster, but that is a vendor claim rather than an independent benchmark. The practical way to choose is to run Film Lab and your shortlisted alternatives on identical shots, in the actual project color pipeline, before committing.
What ARRI Film Lab is—and what it is not
ARRI Film Lab is a license-based OpenFX plugin for postproduction. It applies film-style color and texture to RGB images inside supported grading and compositing applications. ARRI describes it as usable with material from ARRI and third-party cameras once that material is brought into a supported color workflow. A camera logo or codec by itself does not establish compatibility.
That distinction matters for productions that combine cinema cameras, mirrorless cameras, scanned footage, visual-effects renders, or editorial proxies. The input must be presented in a color space and host configuration that Film Lab supports. A plugin can be attractive on a still frame yet become impractical if it requires an awkward transform, fails in the render path, or cannot be loaded by every artist who needs it.

Film Lab should therefore be evaluated as one part of a managed pipeline, not as a standalone “make it look like film” button. Its strengths are the number of film-behavior controls exposed in one interface and the way those controls can be used on footage from different cameras after appropriate color management.
Version 1.5 features
ARRI’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes version 1.5 as a substantial control update. Existing license holders can upgrade to 1.5 free of charge, according to ARRI. The following changes are product specifications reported by ARRI:
| Area | Version 1.5 detail | Why it matters in a workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Film formats | 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm and 65 mm options | Lets the texture and character be chosen as a format decision rather than relying on a single 35 mm model. |
| Grain Size | Adjustable from 0.75 to 1.5 | Separates apparent grain scale from the amount of grain. |
| Rendition of Detail | Adjustable from 0.75 to 1.5 | Provides a control for how much fine image detail is retained in the film rendering. |
| Anamorphic ratios | 1.25x, 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.66x and 2.0x choices | Allows grain and halation behavior to account for anamorphic presentation. |
| Halation Spread | New control | Provides a separate way to shape the reach of the halation effect. |
| Grain and halation intensity | Maximum settings extended to 2.0 | Creates more headroom when a deliberately strong treatment is required. |
| Processing speed | ARRI reports up to four-times-faster processing | Useful as a reason to test the update, but not a substitute for measuring your own footage, resolution and hardware. |
The earlier Negative Stocks, Print Processes and Gate Weave controls remain in the plugin. Film Lab also includes 50D, 200T and 500T grain profiles. Its color options cover print-stock characteristics, reversal film and bleach-bypass treatments. These are available controls and profiles, not proof that every setting is more accurate or more attractive than an alternative plugin on every shot.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The bundled look library
The included ARRI Look Library plugin exposes 87 predefined looks, each in three intensities. A library can speed up look development or provide a starting point for a colorist, but the number of looks does not establish comparative quality. Confirm that the library fits your show’s approval process: a preset still needs shot-specific exposure, contrast and color adjustments.
Check host and color management before comparing looks
Compatibility is the first gate. ARRI lists Resolve, Baselight, Nuke and other grading or postproduction environments for Film Lab. The exact host version, operating system and render configuration must still be confirmed before a production commits. A plugin that opens in an artist’s workstation but fails on a render node is not production-compatible.

Supported working spaces
ARRI identifies support for LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4 and ACES 2.0. In ACES workflows, ACEScc and ACEScct input/output options are available. Your project should document which of these spaces enters Film Lab and which space leaves it; otherwise two artists can apply the same nominal setting to differently transformed images.
| Pipeline question | What to verify | Failure sign |
|---|---|---|
| Host | Is the exact application and version supported on every workstation and render node? | The effect is missing, disabled or unavailable during final rendering. |
| Operating system | Does the seller list your OS for the chosen host? | The plugin installs on one platform but not another in the same facility. |
| Input space | Will Film Lab receive LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4 or the project’s ACES configuration? | Contrast, saturation or highlight behavior changes unexpectedly after a transform. |
| Output space | Where does the processed image go next in the node tree or comp? | Grain or halation is altered by a later color-space conversion. |
| Mixed cameras | Are all RGB sources normalized before the plugin? | One camera matches while another has different density or color response. |
| Render path | Can the same plugin version and license be used for remote or farm rendering? | Interactive previews work, but batch renders stop at the Film Lab node. |
For licensing and host details, the RE:Vision Effects Film Lab page for Resolve lists a free trial, host and operating-system information, compatibility notes and license options. Use that information together with the host’s own plugin documentation rather than assuming that a version shown in a tutorial is still supported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Camera-agnostic does not mean transform-free
ARRI describes Film Lab as camera-agnostic for RGB material brought into its supported pipeline. That is useful for mixed-camera shows, but it does not remove the need to normalize exposure, white balance and color space. A third-party camera file may need a technical transform before Film Lab, while an ARRI LogC source may already be close to the expected working space. Test both paths with the same reference frames.
What to compare with another film-emulation plugin
Do not compare only screenshots or preset names. Compare the decisions that affect the finished sequence.
1. Host and pipeline fit
Start with the application the team actually uses and the version installed in production. Then map the color-management path: input transform, plugin node, look adjustments, output transform and deliverable. A competing plugin may offer a desirable look but require an extra conversion that complicates conforming or round-tripping.

2. Control model
List the controls the show needs before opening either plugin. Film Lab exposes separate decisions for film format, grain size, rendition of detail, grain intensity, halation intensity, halation spread, anamorphic ratio, negative stock, print process and gate weave. It also offers the 50D, 200T and 500T grain profiles, reversal-film and bleach-bypass options, and the 87-look library. An alternative may organize similar ideas differently or omit one of them. The issue is not the longest feature list; it is whether the colorist can reach the intended result without hidden compensating steps.

Use a chart or carefully chosen reference shots from every camera and normalize them into the project space. Check skin tones, saturated colors, overexposed windows, underexposed interiors and neutral gray objects. Do not assume that a camera-specific preset in another plugin is equivalent to a camera-agnostic workflow; read that plugin’s documented input requirements.
4. Performance under real conditions
ARRI’s “up to four times faster” statement for version 1.5 is attributed to ARRI and is not an independent comparison. Measure playback, interactive adjustment and final render with your actual resolution, frame rate, node tree, temporal effects and hardware. A speed gain on a short 4K clip may not carry over to a long-form timeline with multiple Film Lab instances.
5. Licensing and production logistics
Film Lab is sold under individual weekly, monthly, annual and permanent terms; the seller page also lists floating and other license options. Current prices, seat counts, render rights, floating behavior and upgrade terms are not established by the supplied product information, so confirm them with the seller for your region and host. Compare the same details for every alternative: a low entry price can become expensive if additional render or floating rights are required.
Decision matrix: when Film Lab is the sensible first trial
| Your requirement | Film Lab fit | What to validate before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable grain plus halation | Strong candidate: separate intensity controls, Halation Spread, multiple grain profiles and format choices. | Whether the desired strength remains natural on your footage and whether render speed is acceptable. |
| Period drama or deliberately vintage treatment | Strong candidate: print/process options, reversal and bleach-bypass choices, gate weave and format selection. | Whether the look library or manual controls match the director’s references without excessive downstream correction. |
| Mixed ARRI and third-party cameras | Potentially suitable because ARRI describes RGB, camera-agnostic operation in supported workflows. | Normalize each source and test skin tones, highlights and shadows side by side. |
| ACES 2.0 facility | Potentially suitable with ACEScc or ACEScct input/output options. | Confirm the exact ACES configuration and node order used by the facility. |
| Editor or compositor outside the listed hosts | Uncertain; ARRI lists Resolve, Baselight, Nuke and other environments, but the exact application must be confirmed. | Host version, operating system, plugin format and render-node support. |
| Need for a very different control philosophy | Compare alternatives directly; Film Lab’s feature set may not match a workflow built around another plugin’s tools. | Whether the alternative handles your input space, camera mix and delivery path with fewer transforms. |
| Short-term project or evaluation | Practical to trial; RE:Vision lists a free trial and ARRI describes weekly and monthly license terms. | Trial expiration, activation limits, render permissions and conversion to a longer license. |

- Freeze the test conditions. Choose representative shots: a face in soft light, a high-contrast exterior, a low-light interior, foliage or saturated production design, and a mixed-camera pair. Keep resolution, frame rate, debayer settings and timeline transforms constant.
- Document the color path. Write down the source space for each clip, the project working space, the space entering Film Lab or the competing plugin, and the output transform. Include whether the project uses LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4 or ACES 2.0 with ACEScc or ACEScct.
- Install the same host build. Verify the plugin on the colorist’s workstation, an editor’s machine if needed, and the render system. Record the operating system and plugin version so a later conform can reproduce the result.
- Match exposure before matching style. Bring the test shots to a comparable neutral starting point. Otherwise a brighter source can be mistaken for a better film response.
- Build equivalent looks. In Film Lab, test at least one 50D, 200T and 500T grain profile; one print-process treatment; one reversal or bleach-bypass treatment if the show calls for it; and a controlled gate-weave setting. Compare an alternative plugin using its closest documented controls, not its most dramatic preset.
- Exercise the new version 1.5 controls. Change format between 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm and 65 mm; sweep Grain Size and Rendition of Detail through their 0.75–1.5 ranges; test anamorphic ratios from 1.25x to 2.0x; and adjust Halation Spread separately from intensity. Keep notes on which controls solve a visible problem and which merely add texture.
- Check motion and edges. Review moving shots at full speed for crawling grain, distracting weave or unstable halation around bright edges. A still frame cannot reveal temporal artifacts.
- Render a short deliverable. Export a representative section through the complete finishing path. Compare playback, render time, skin tones, highlight transitions, shadow color and mixed-camera matching. Record whether the result can be handed to another artist without rebuilding transforms.
- Review production terms. Before buying, confirm current price, seat count, activation method, floating or render rights, supported hosts and upgrade policy. Keep the written confirmation with the show’s technical documentation.
Performance: how to interpret the speed claim
ARRI says Film Lab 1.5 can process up to four times faster than the earlier version. “Up to” describes a best-case limit, not a guaranteed timeline-wide result. The outcome can vary with image resolution, number of plugin instances, host, hardware, other effects and whether playback or final rendering is being measured.
Use a timed test with the same clip and settings in both versions. Measure an interactive grade, a cached playback pass and a final export. Then repeat with the heaviest shots in the show. Keep the test results internal to your production; the available evidence does not establish an independent head-to-head benchmark against other plugins.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Licensing and upgrade planning
ARRI describes individual weekly, monthly, annual and permanent Film Lab licenses, while the seller page lists floating and other options as well. Existing license holders are described by ARRI as eligible for a free upgrade to version 1.5. Because prices and commercial terms can change, obtain the current offer for your country, host and seat configuration before budgeting.
Ask these questions in writing:
- How many artist seats are included?
- Can a license be used on a render node or farm?
- What does “floating” mean for simultaneous users and offline work?
- Does a weekly or monthly term renew automatically?
- Which host and operating-system versions are covered?
- How are permanent-license upgrades handled after version 1.5?
- What happens to an active project if the license server or internet connection is unavailable?
The free trial listed by RE:Vision Effects is useful for technical validation, but treat it as a production test rather than a guarantee that every facility configuration will behave identically.
Common failure modes and fixes
The image looks wrong after adding Film Lab
First check the input and output spaces. A LogC or ACES image passed through an unexpected transform can appear too contrasty, too saturated or washed out. Bypass neighboring transforms, verify the node order and confirm whether the host is color-managing the plugin automatically.

One camera matches and another does not
Normalize the sources before applying the look. Match exposure and white balance, then compare neutral objects and skin tones. Film Lab’s camera-agnostic description applies to RGB material in a supported workflow; it does not make unnormalized camera responses identical.
Playback is slow
Test caching and render speed separately from interactive adjustment. Reduce unnecessary duplicate instances, compare the same settings at the delivery resolution and check whether another temporal or grain effect is competing with Film Lab. Version 1.5’s reported speed improvement should be measured on the actual system rather than assumed.
The look is too strong
Lower grain and halation intensity before abandoning the plugin. Then adjust Grain Size, Rendition of Detail, Halation Spread, film format and anamorphic ratio independently. A preset at one of the three Look Library intensities is only a starting point.
The render machine cannot load the effect
Verify that the render node has the same plugin version, operating-system support and license rights as the grading workstation. If the license is floating or tied to a seat, confirm that the render process is allowed under those terms.
Evidence and claims you can safely rely on
ARRI’s product page documents the supported color spaces, hosts, controls, grain profiles, color options and 87-look library. Its version 1.5 announcement supplies the October 12, 2026 feature changes, free-upgrade statement and vendor-reported speed claim. ARRI also quotes cinematographer Stijn van der Veken ASC, SBC: “It is the first time I’ve seen a film look plugin that really helps create a vintage look on a period drama.” That is an individual testimonial, not comparative proof.
ARRI identifies digital imaging technician and colorist Maurice Morales as describing Film Lab’s role in carrying cinematographers’ creative intent into editorial dailies. Treat that as an explanation of intended use, not an independent performance test. No named market statistic or independent head-to-head study establishes a universal winner among film-emulation plugins.
Verdict: choose the workflow, not the preset
Choose Film Lab when its OpenFX host support, LogC/AWG or ACES pipeline, detailed grain and halation controls, format behavior, print/process options and license model line up with the production. Its 1.5 update makes the evaluation more flexible by adding 8 mm, 16 mm and 65 mm choices, expanded intensity ranges, anamorphic ratios, Halation Spread and additional detail controls.
